ELANCO Celebrate Recovery, a group that represents a partnership between three area churches and CrossNet Ministries and offers a Christian perspective on a 12-step recovery program, will hold a one-year anniversary barbecue on Thursday, Sept. 20, beginning at 6 p.m. In early 2017, leaders of three ELANCO-area churches, Bethany Grace, Weaverland, and Petra, felt called to partner to form a Celebrate Recovery group in New Holland. A year later, approximately 50 individuals are attending meetings held weekly at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The impact of the ministry has been felt among both volunteers and participants, but ministry leader Carol Musser wants area residents to know more about the program. “We are looking to

get the word out that (Celebrate Recovery) is not just for (those struggling with) addictions, said Musser. The program offers men’s and women’s groups for recovery and life issues, but according to Musser, more groups are being added. “For women, we have a food group for misuse of food, and we also started a codependency group, said Musser. “On the horizon, we would love to have a men’s sexual addiction group separated (from recovery). The barbecue celebration will include an open mic segment for testimonies. “Testimonies give people a chance to tell their stories, said Musser. “There is something about the ground leveling (that happens) during that time. Musser added that testimonies reinforce that all individuals are on a journey. “There is no hierarchy, she said. “(Instead), there is a common bond. Assistant ministry director Karl See Celebrate Recovery pg 8

Auction, Kids’ Camp Bonanza Planned At Woodcrest By Ann Mead Ash

“My favorite time of the auction is when we auction off the special projects, said Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat. “It is humbling to have people bid just to support the ministry with nothing to show for it but a tax-deductible receipt. Martin noted that this year bidders will have the opportunity to donate funds for two special projects if they attend the annual benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, beginning at 9 a.m. “This year we have See Woodcrest pg 8

Volunteer staff members with ELANCO Celebrate Recovery are looking forward to celebrating the chapter’s one-year anniversary at Petra Church on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. The chapter, which offers a Christian perspective on a 12-step recovery program, meets at the church each Thursday evening.

Keeping It Positive Local Resident Seeks To Share Uplifting News By Ann Mead Ash

Preparing for the Woodcrest Retreat benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza are (from left) Maleah Mabry, Mason Mabry, summer camp director Adam Fox, and Theodore Zook. The annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, beginning at 9 a.m.

New Holland resident Allison Cuthie recently addressed the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club concerning a project that is close to her heart. “My children are the reason I do most things, said Cuthie, who has four children ranging in age from 8 to 11. “As a parent, you want to do everything you can to give your child advantages and help them be the best person they can be. Cuthie explained that her concern for her children and for her own emotional health led her to create “Uplift ELANCO, a Facebook page and email

The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole

barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and

juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts and pots. To learn more about the auction, readers may visit www.brethrenauction.org, call 717-723-6863 on the day of the auction or pick up an auction booklet at local retailers.

The annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. Clark Witman takes bids for an item at a previous auction.

Women of all ages are invited to take part in the fall session of “The Value of You,” a book discussion group that meets every other Tuesday from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. The class, which began on Sept. 18, is taught by Jill Waters, a counselor with Still Waters Ministries (SWM), a nonprofit organization that offers no-cost community counseling services to area residents. Upcoming classes will be held on Oct. 2, 16 and 30; Nov. 13 and 27; and Dec. 11. The topic of the book study will be “Pursuing Contentment,” which is part of the Women of Faith Study Guide Series. The book explores what the Bible says about true contentment and how it is a skill that can be learned. “Our discussion will emphasize the importance of being content in every life experience that comes our way,” said Waters. She emphasized that the class is open to all women from various backgrounds and faiths. “We discuss emotions, relationships, struggles and how to take care of and value ourselves,” noted Waters. “This class provides practical application for a woman’s daily life. We (learn that we should be) loved and valued.” This is Waters’ sixth year of offering the book discussion group for women. She noted that the class takes a summer break from June through August and resumes in September. During the summer months, the women meet for picnics on the church grounds. No child care is provided during the sessions. Women are asked to purchase the “Pursuing Contentment” book. SWM recently announced that the Celtic Martins will be the featured entertainment at its fall fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 5, at Conestoga Mennonite Church. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. A dessert reception and a meetand-greet with the Martins will follow the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. The Celtic Martins, a family band from Newmanstown, will perform traditional Celtic music, as well as step dancing. The group consists of six siblings who play various instruments, including the fiddle, Irish whistles, bagpipes, guitar, accordion, cello and percussion. They are joined on guitar, bass and drums by their parents and the husband of one of the siblings. The Celtic Martins have been performing Irish tunes and Irish step dance routines since 2004 at various festivals, theaters and other venues. This will be the second time that the group has been featured at SWM’s fall fundraiser. “We are duplicating everything that we did last October because it was so successful,” Waters remarked. “It is a very lively, family-friendly show with excellent Celtic music and clogging.” The evening will also include a sale of homemade Amish pretzels and a silent auction featuring products and services donated by local individuals and businesses. The silent auction items will be available for viewing at 6 p.m. SWM, which was founed by

Celebrate Recoveryfrom pg 1 Stoltzfus echoed Musser’s thoughts, adding that the stories often bring hope and inspiration to the hearer. “Testimonies are really helpful for people to hear (because) they are real-life stories of what God has done in people’s lives.” Running an effective chapter of Celebrate Recovery requires a number of volunteers. “ W hat’s really needed are greeters, people to mingle, and group leaders,” said Musser, who added that she has seen volunteers reap benefits of taking part. “The astounding thing over this past year is how much (Celebrate Recovery) has impacted the volunteers,” said Musser. “When folks see people come out of heavy-duty stuff and watch God work, you cannot be unchanged by it. Everyone can take away something from Celebrate Recovery that makes their lives more enjoyable and less stressful.” Stoltzfus had discovered Celebrate Recovery podcasts online before meeting Ken

Reinford, one of the Petra pastors who was involved in founding the New Holland chapter. “I thought (the program) was phenomenal,” said Stoltzfus, who as part of the New Holland team has seen the group function first-hand. “People who are involved in leadership have caught the vision of what Celebrate Recovery is all about,” noted Stoltzfus. He sees the impact on the community as well. “(Celebrate Recovery) is not just a recovery program; it’s a discipleship program. It’s been about building relationships,” said Stoltzfus, who has seen attendees connect to local churches to further their journeys with the Lord. about her concerns and posted them online, where she found others could relate to her frustrations. Cuthie noted that it was difficult to balance her desire to be informed with wanting to avoid the consistent push of negativity she had experienced. Cuthie decided that she had a choice in the matter. “We are responsible to make these decisions for ourselves,” she said. In response, Cuthie began taking account of positive experiences and reacting to them in a positive way. “I decided to make a resolution that whenever I observed good things happening, I would acknowledge those things,” she said. After writing a letter praising a postal worker who took time to help her with a complicated mailing, Cuthie decided she wanted to do more. She created a Facebook page. Women Invited To Neighbors Caring And Sharing By Francine Fulton

For more than 30 years, women have enjoyed getting together for prayer, fellowship and a speaker or program as part of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown. Although attendance has expanded from just church members to women from the community, the objective of promoting friendship has remained the same. “We welcome everyone who is looking for a place to connect with Christian women and wants to make new friends,” said program chair Tina

Essick. “A lot of people come to the group who might be new to the area, and it helps in that way, too.” Neighbors Caring and Sharing will begin its 32nd year on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the meeting will be “Caramels - Oh So Sweet,” and it will feature homemade baked goods and a presentation titled “Sweet Talk” by guest speaker Cindy Petersheim. “We’re going to bake a couple of desserts and snacks with caramel,” Essick explained, noting that the dishes will include caramel apple bundt cake and German chocolate cake with caramel, which will be

served with ice cream. Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through April 16, 2019, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be two outings scheduled by the group in May and June of next year. Each meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. “We are going to try a different format this year,” Essick noted. “In the beginning of the morning there will be more social time - a time allotted for fellowship, so the ladies get to know each other and enrich their friendships.”

Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and age-appropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required, and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. Essick said that the calendar of events this year features a host of new guest speakers. “On Oct. 9, there will be a program by North

On Nov. 6, Jeff Leath from Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Lancaster County will be the presenter. Attendees will be asked to bring in bars of soap that will be used by the organization to create care packages. In lieu of a meeting on Dec. 4, Carrie Warner will perform a Christmas concert in the church sanctuary. A new program, “My Favorite Things,” will be presented on Jan. 15, 2019. “You bring three favorite things (valued) under $5 each to share with the group,” Essick explained, noting that the items will be given out through a random drawing. “I think it will be fun. And we will sing the song from

‘The Sound of Music.’” The Neighbors’ planning committee includes Sue Sutter, Norma Denlinger and Beth Random. “Beth will also be a speaker for us again on Nov. 13,” Essick noted. The title of Random’s talk will be “The Gift of Gratitude - Colossians 2:6-7.” Two final outings are planned after the regular meetings have concluded. On May 14, 2019, the group will carpool to the Welkinweir estate in Pottstown. The final outing will be on June 18, 2019, when the ladies will meet for lunch at Historic Poole Forge in Narvon.
