Garden Spot

Encouraging fire safety for all

“We have always wanted to preplan houses,” said Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) Chief Darryl Keiser.

“Every house has different and unique things about it.” The people who live in a house are different and unique as well. When firefighters arrive at a home where there is suspicion of danger, knowing details about those people and the home can improve the chances of residents and firefighters coming out of the event safely.

The fire company has long used a computer program to record details of fire calls for use by the department and the Pennsylvania state fire commissioner. GSFR firefighters felt the system could be more user-friendly, so Nick Good, chief of staff and public information officer for GSFR worked along with volunteer Stefan Kuenzli to find First Due, a system

Farm show time

The New Holland Farmers Fair is arguably the biggest event to happen in New Holland each year. From the arrival of the sheep, goats, and swine at the tents on Fulton Street on Monday through the last turn of the merry-go-round on Saturday night, the fair attracts multitudes of visitors and offers fun and interesting activities for all.

The 2023 New Holland Fair will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 7, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Oct. 4 with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. As in the past, the fair will feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors.

GSFR offers residential preplanning

he believes will work better and even give residents an opportunity to participate in reducing their own risk.

Garden Spot Community Connect is a program of First Due that ELANCOarea residents served by GSFR can utilize.

“The people you protect can go on a website and pull up their (home) address to preplan their house for us,” explained Keiser. “So, we have all the information we need about their house coming to us as we are responding, and it’s documented.”

Residents who visit the website may set up an account and then answer questions about the type of home they live in and whether there are children or elderly persons or persons with disabilities or other special needs in the home. “The Community Connect walks you

through questions. It breaks it down for you,” said Good, who asked his mother to test the system for him. “She said it was very simple,” Good reported. Other information residents may include is types of building materials and whether there is a gas connection and where the shut-off valves are located.

Information provided by residents is uploaded so that it is readily available when a call comes in. Keiser noted that a street view will be available on a tablet for firefighters to know if the home is a ranch, a Cape Cod, or two-story farmhouse. Keiser added, “Everybody says, ‘We won’t have a house fire,’ but when you do need us, this will save time.”

Good emphasized that just creating an account and including contact information is extremely helpful,

since the call may come in from someone other than the homeowner. “If no one is (at the home) to tell us anything, we can get in touch with (the homeowner) ... so we are not walking in unprepared,” he explained.

“We don’t want to be intrusive; we just want the information we need to serve those people in their time of need and keep our guys safe,” explained Keiser.

Residents who would like to have the benefits of preplanning may visit www.communityconnect .io/info/pa-gardenspot and click on the tab that says “Residents.” “The more information we have, the more we can do,” said Good, who explained that the cloud-based system will be updated and allow for expansion. “We invested in this knowing we can use it for a long time,” he said, adding that he is hoping community members will step up and help GSFR with the cost of the program.

Area residents wishing to enter an item to exhibit in the fair for the first time will need to register for an entry number. Past exhibitors who did not receive a number in the mail must register as well. Registration for entry numbers will be held at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Kristie Overly, who oversees exhibits, noted that the floral exhibits will be located in the youth center this year and that the space will allow the addition of miniature gardens to the competition. “It will be a really beautiful display this year,” said Overly, who encouraged all exhibitors to drop their items off early if possible.

Fair president Paulene Redding, who organizes the parade, said that she still has a few premium spots available. Premium spots provide funding to make necessary

Fundraising banquet to aid ministry in Haiti

Hearts United with Haiti will host its fall fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. at Weaver’s Banquet Facility, 2610 N. Reading Road, Denver. Doors open at 5 p.m. The event will celebrate the past year of ministry in Haiti and share how God is working both in and through Hearts United

with Haiti to serve the community there. In addition to buffet dinner, the event will include a slideshow, a video, and remarks from the founder of Hearts United with Haiti.

The guest speaker will be Matt Williams, creator and executive producer of “Roseanne” and co-creator

and executive producer of “Home Improvement.” His projects include television, movies, regional, and offBroadway theater. He also teaches theater classes at Columbia University. Williams recently launched his newest project, “Glimpses: A Comedy Writer’s Take on Life, Love, and All That Spiritual Stuff.” A multimedia project, “Glimpses” consists of a podcast series, essays, public readings, lectures, seminars, and a book sharing the same title. The book is scheduled to be released in February 2024. The aim of “Glimpses” is to spark kindness, inspire hope, and celebrate goodness.

At the banquet, attendees may preorder copies of Williams’ book, with proceeds going to support a collection of children’s charities worldwide, including Hearts United with Haiti.

The event is free of charge. Donations will go toward a fund established to purchase a permanent location in Haiti to house the community center, which provides food, classes, events, sports, and more to the families and youths in the neighborhood. Seating is limited, and preregistration is required by Thursday, Oct. 5, at www.heartsunitedwith haiti.org/news-events .html. Table sponsors are also sought.

repairs to the farm show building at the corner of Franklin Street and Roberts Avenue. Seven high school and middle school bands will take part this year, with the Downingtown High School honor band leading the way and the rear brought up by the Fralinger String Band, a group of Mummers.

Nightly entertainment was introduced during the 2022 fair. The live music was so well received that the bands have been lined up to perform on Towne Centre Green from 7 to 10 p.m. each evening from Thursday, Oct. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 7. Clockwork Band will perform on Thursday, Adam and the Armadillos will perform on Friday, and The Nomads will play on Saturday.

Exhibits

Overly encouraged individuals who work in the New Holland area to come to the fair for lunch during the week, beginning on Wednesday. “(Those who come for lunch) can support the vendors and see it before it gets crowded,” she pointed out. Daytime visitors may also visit the new farmers market on Franklin Street.

Redding noted that volunteers are always needed and that all farm show volunteers are invited to attend the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs convention in Hershey from Wednesday, Jan. 17, through Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024. “It’s amazing,” said Overly.

Those who wish to purchase ride tickets early may do so at Yoder’s

Country Market, Stauffer’s Drug Store, at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, and the farm show building on Oct. 3. Children who wish to enter the coloring contest may pick up pages at the ELANCO Library. Premium booklets may be available at local post offices or online at www.newhollandfair.org/ book.php.

Apple dumpling sale, concerts planned

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its annual apple dumpling sale on Friday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. until sold out.

Proceeds will go to the Back to the Cloister Fund, which allows the Cloister museum to compete with private collectors and other institutions on the open market for original items made at the Cloister. Over the years, proceeds from the apple dumpling sale have been used to purchase one-of-

a-kind furniture, rare music manuscripts, and the original 1739 deed to the historic site. More than 100 items have been purchased since the creation of the fund more than 40 years ago.

The apple dumplings, made by Achenbach’s in Leola, will be available for a fee per dumpling at the drivethrough tent beside the museum store at the Historic Ephrata Cloister. The sale will take place rain or shine. Interested individuals are encouraged to make their purchases

LANDSCAPE DESIGNING

early. Preorders are available for orders of 10 or more dumplings at http://bit.ly/ 3RfRrm0. Free delivery is available for preorders of 20 or more dumplings delivered within 10 miles of the Ephrata Cloister. Contact ephratacloister@gmail.com to make delivery arrangements. No admission to the museum is required to purchase apple dumplings.

The museum store, featuring locally made crafts, art, books, and one-of-a-kind items, will be open both days and will feature a porch sale of specialty goods.

For more information about apple dumpling sales or to learn more about the historic site, contact the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600 or visit www.Ephrata Cloister.org.

Additionally, community members are also invited to celebrate the musical heritage of Ephrata on Sunday, Oct. 8,

by attending concerts by the Ephrata Cloister Chorus in the historic 1741 Saal (Meetinghouse). The concerts will take place at 2 and 3 p.m. Tours of the historic buildings will be provided at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. and will conclude in time for the concerts.

The chorus, under the direction of Mark Herr and accompanied by Juliet Mitton, will offer a selection of music written in Colonial Ephrata and in other early American communities, including the Amish and Moravians.

Featured in the program will be two Cloister chorales arranged by Russell Getz. The concerts will mark the first time that “Der Abend Kommt” has been performed at the Cloister in more than 40 years. The concert will also include a third Cloister piece transcribed in 1986 by a college professor and concert pianist who came to Pennsylvania from the West to con-

duct research on Ephrata music. The text of this piece was written by the Reformed poet and mystic Gerhard Tersteegen, whose texts are frequently found in

Cloister Music.

The chorus will also perform “Loblied,” which is a hymn found in the world’s oldest continuously used hymnal, “The Ausbund.” This hymn is sung at every Sunday worship service of the Amish.

Other selections will include the hymn “How Can I Keep From Singing?” - composed by the Rev. Robert Lowry in the 19th century and arranged by Jeffrey Honore - and a piece of Moravian music, “Praise Ye the Lord.”

The chorus will perform “O Taeler weit, o Hoehen”; set to music by Felix Mendelssohn, this piece talks of the beauty of nature and the blessings found in one’s daily life.

The concerts are included with admission to the site.

Admission is discounted for seniors and for students ages 6 to 18. Children age 5 and under and members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates will be admitted without charge.

Cooking-related fire safety tips posted

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years, has announced “Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention.” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, which will occur from Sunday to Saturday, Oct. 8 to 14. This year’s campaign will seek to educate members of the public about simple steps they can take to help reduce the risk of fire when cooking at home.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with

nearly half of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and related deaths.

NFPA has provided a variety of tips related to fire prevention when cooking.

Always keep a close eye on the food that is cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully. Also, do not leave the kitchen while food is

cooking, and minimize distractions.

Clear the cooking area of anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels.

Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Also, keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Create a kid-free and pet-free zone of at least 3 feet around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

Fire Prevention Week is celebrated

throughout North America every October. Entering its 101st year, Fire Prevention Week works to educate people about the leading risks of home fires and ways people can better protect themselves and their loved ones. Local fire departments, schools, and community organizations play a key role in spreading basic fire safety messages.

To learn more, visit www.fpw.org. Additional Fire Prevention Week resources for children, caregivers, and educators can be found at www.sparky.org and www.sparkyschoolhouse.org.
