Investing In The Community GSFR Prepares To House Three New Engines BY ANN MEAD ASH
ince August, Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) Chief Darryl Keiser has been fielding questions about new fire trucks. “People say, ‘Hey, have I seen a new fire engine around town?’” said Keiser. The answer is a resounding “Yes,” and in fact, not just one new engine, but three, one for each of the GSFR stations. On Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., a housing ceremony for all three engines will be held at Station 1, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, at 1 p.m. The ceremony, which will last about 45 minutes, will include remarks by Keiser, Rep. Dave Zimmerman, Rep. Ryan Aument, and Lancaster County Commissioners Josh Parsons and Ray D’Agostino. Following the housing ceremony, an open house will be held at the station until 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be door prize drawings.
S
The journey to acquiring three new engines began about two years ago, according to Keiser. “Engine 1 and Engine 3 were at the 25-year mark,” said Keiser. “ We replace equipment at the 25-year mark. Engine 2 was 15 years old.” A suggestion was made to replace all three engines with identical engines for purposes of operational functionality. Keiser explained that firefighters will be working with the same type of engine no matter which station they report to, cutting down on training time. “A lot of (firefighters) live in one section (of the GSFR coverage area) and work in a different one,” said Nick Good, director of administration and public information officer for the fire company, who explained that some members regularly divide time between stations. “You don’t have to think, ‘What engine am I on? (because they’re all the same). That helps with response time.” See GSFR pg 4

The Giant Company recently announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s instore pharmacies. Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will again offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots beginning in September. Customers can visit any instore pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. Through Saturday, Oct. 2, select Giant and Martin’s pharmacies will offer driveup flu vaccinations where patients can pull into a spot in the designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their cars. For more information about store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times available, visit www.giantfoodstores.com /pages/tgc-vaccines or w w w. m a r t i n s f o o d s . c o m /pages/tgc-vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone over age 6 months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems. In addition to flu shots, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies to adults age 18 and above. COVID-19 vaccine type may vary by location. Pharmacies offering the Pfizer vaccine can administer to teens ages 12 to 17. Parental See Flu Shots pg 4

The first event of CONNECT 2021 took place from July 12 through 15, following the inception of the idea in March. The event was organized through a collaboration of five area churches Bethany Grace Fellowship, St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, Bowmansville Mennonite, Terre Hill Bible Fellowship and Vibrant Church of Terre Hill - working together to organize a youth-centered service work outreach in the eastern Lancaster County communities of East Earl, Terre Hill, Reinholds and Bowmansville. Using six teams of 13 youths and 17 adults, the churches planned and completed a total of 11 work projects for widows, single moms and others in need. The work included pressure washing, painting, repairing a deck, working on roofing and siding, cleanup, debris removal, landscaping and general maintenance. Participants were able to share fellowship and create memories and friendships. They were supported by more than 20 other participants from the churches in areas of operations planning, logistics, transportation, administration, hospitality, and discipleship/fellowship. Many local merchants joined with the churches in supporting CONNECT 2021 with discounts, gift cards and donations of construction and maintenance materials and food.

Styer noted that organizers are thinking of the safety of attendees. “ We will use the whole park so there will be plenty of room to space out,” he said, noting that he expects the weather to cooperate with the early October date. “It’s such a nice time of year to have it,” he stated. GSFR serves residents in three municipalities: 100% of New Holland borough, 75% of Earl Township, and 50% of East Earl Township. All three entities contributed to covering the cost of the new engines. Keiser said that each new engine provides seating for seven in the cab, and it can hold 750 gallons of water. Good noted a number of other advantages, including a shorter wheelbase for better maneuverability. “It’s easier to navigate into tighter areas,” said Good, who added that the engines will be lighter on equipment so as not to duplicate items that are on other trucks.

A 10-member committee began working about a year ago to determine key features of the engines. In April, production on the engines started at Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wis. The committee traveled to the factory in July to inspect the final project, and the engines were delivered to New Holland in August. The cost of the three engines was $1.8 million, which was covered in a variety of ways, including a GSFR fund for capital equipment replacement. GSFR will continue to fundraise to meet fire company needs. “When you look at the 25 years and spending $1.8 (million), you’re investing back into the community,” said Good, who noted that other apparatus will need to be replaced in between. “It spaces it out to handle three at once (because) in a few years, we may need a new ladder truck or tanker.” Readers who would like to learn more about GSFR may visit www.gsfr39.net, call 717-354-8311.
Salem Bible Church, 590 Voganville Road, New Holland, invites the community to Salem Bible Game Day on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 9 p.m. Attendees will have opportunities to play board games, card games and pingpong. Admission is free, and dinner will be provided.

Lucy Stern’s 10 digs led the Spartans as did Kauffman’s 23 assists and Ellsworth’s three blocks. BOYS’ SOCCER Garden Spot opened the week with two victories, winning 3-1 at Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, September 21, then coming back home the following afternoon for a 5-1 defeat of Berks Catholic. Garden Spot (2-3-0) stunned the Pioneers with three second-half goals on Tuesday. Jack Bruggeman scored 13 minutes into the second half. Luke Steiner scored one at the midway point and George Rohrbaugh made it 3-0 in the 69th minute. Rohrbaugh had one goal and two assists the next day. Keegan Redcay added a goal in the 24th minute and Bruggeman made it 3-0 ten minutes later. Steiner made it 4-1 in the second half. Trey Dwyer capped the scoring with six minutes left in the match. Bruggeman had one goal in the non-league game on September 18 as Cocalico eked out a 2-1 win at home. Among the gutsy efforts by the Spartans was a number four singles match in which Nicole Zeiset came up short against Lindsay Steele 6-2,

SWM Continues To Offer Counseling BY FRANCINE FULTON
Since July of 2012, people have turned to Still Waters Ministries (SWM), based at Conestoga Mennonite Church, for free counseling services. Today, the ministry is not only still thriving, but it recently added a new counselor, Amy Stoltzfus of Morgantown. “We are excited about her because her specialty is addiction and eating disorders,” said Jill Waters, who founded the ministry along with her husband, Sam, SWM executive director. “She also (helps clients) deal with childhood trauma. It’s really nice because (the number of clients looking for counseling has increased) because of the pandemic. We were thrilled when Amy came on board.” Sam has nearly 12 years of private counseling experience working with individuals, couples, children and teens. He also serves as an elder and deaf interpreter for Conestoga Mennonite Church and is a sign language certified counselor. Jill, who has a certification

in pastoral counseling, helps local women, including those in abusive relationships. Stoltzfus holds a Master of Science in mental health counseling from Shippensburg University. She is certified through the National Board for Certified Counselors and is a member of the American Counseling Association. Other counselors on staff at SWM are Annette Mellina and Pam Hopkins. SWM serves clients in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties
virtually and at its offices at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. “I work via phone, and Sam works virtually over a HIPPA-approved (network),” Jill said. “Conestoga provides (office space) and Amy will be (there).” Jill pointed out that SWM is a no-fee community counseling ministry. All services and any corresponding costs are covered by private donations. No costs or fees are charged to clients.
“Because of COVID we could not have any fundraising last year. That had a significant effect,” said Jill. “But it seems as though the corporate and individual donations have really increased. We have clients (who donate) because they are able.” SWM offers help to those dealing with a variety of issues such as anger, depression, fear and anxiety, addictions, selfesteem issues and broken relationships. The ministry also offers an array of services for victims of domestic violence. While the ministry is churchbased and focuses on the spiritual and ethical standards of the Christian faith, counseling services are offered to everyone, regardless of church or religious affiliation. All sessions and calls are confidential. For more information about SWM or to make an appointment, call 610-2869555 or visit www.still -waters-ministries.org. Those who would like to donate to the ministry should visit the website and click on the Silver Seal button.
Book Celebrates County’s “Working Horses” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Author and book designer Beth Oberholtzer admits to having a lifelong love of horses, with a special admiration of draft horses for their beauty, strength, and size. For photographer John Herr, who recently completed the book “Working Horses of Lancaster County” with Oberholtzer, horses are more of an acquired appreciation. “I found myself in farm fields with any number of
horses,” said Herr of his work on the book. “Subjects came up out of curiosity (to give me) a smell or a nuzzle or a gentle nip. I gained a real appreciation for horses and mules.” Oberholtzer and Herr held a multimedia presentation at Fairmount on July 28, explaining how they created the book and sharing experiences of shooting the photos. Oberholtzer explained that the book focuses on both draft horses and carriage horses,
noting breeds within those categories that are common in the county. “Most draft animals (in the county) are Belgian horses or mules,” she stated, adding that Percherons and Suffolks may also be seen. Among carriage horses, the pair encountered the popular standardbred and the spirited saddlebred. Oberholtzer also described Morgan horses as smaller and tougher, Dutch harness horses as stronger and more stylish, and Fresians
