Let’s Go Camping! A Safer Way To Travel Is Trending
A group of people from the Lancaster area enjoy roughing it on the south loop of Pennsylvania’s Black Forest Trail. BY ANN MEAD ASH
T
he pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple
Steve Loewen of New Holland camps regularly in his converted toy hauler that easily accommodates his wheelchair and other equipment.
RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping, said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit
together, said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping, as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to
35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures

At the beginning, the problem was transportation. Rita Boer, practice manager for Community Services Group’s (CSG) Lancaster and Dauphin outpatient programs, said that transportation to mental health services in Lancaster was identified as an issue in Paradise prior to 2016 and in New Holland during the next few years. “Our main office is in Lancaster, and we were hearing how See Counseling pg 2

When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to

(transportation) was a barrier for people who don’t live in the city … and some were not comfortable coming into the city because they were more familiar with their own communities,” explained Boer. “We were hearing that was a barrier … and that there was a high demand and high need for mental health services, so we said, ‘Let’s do what we can to bring services into these communities.’” In Paradise, the Together Initiative Network (TIN) had identified the need for mental health services to be provided in the area. “TIN looks at whole community, and that group saw a need for mental health services,” said Boer, who noted that office space was available for a counselor to meet with patients in the Together Community Center (TCC). In New Holland,
CrossNet executive director Meredith Dahl first contacted CSG when area students were waiting up to six months to receive services. Leanna Hassler, who received her master’s degree in clinical counseling from Alvernia University, was the first CSG employee to provide mental health services at TCC. Hassler, who has worked with children and families using ecosystemic structural family therapy, worked closely with the advocates at The Factory Ministries, which is located at TCC, to connect with patients. In 2018, Hassler brought those same services to CrossNet, but she was soon joined in working outpatient settings by a second therapist. “We needed part of our clinicians time to be in the main office to help keep them

connected to what we were doing in the larger clinic,” said Boer, who noted that about six months ago Angela Keller was brought in to provide services at CrossNet. Keller has a master’s degree in social work from Millersville University, and she has worked in the mental health field since 2003. She utilizes a person-centered therapeutic approach. Prior to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hassler was visiting TCC each Monday and Tuesday to provide outpatient therapy by appointment. Hassler was also working at CrossNet, but eventually Keller took over visiting New Holland one day per week, and she was quickly filling appointments. “Both (counselors) work with people across the age range from children through adults,” said Boer. When the state was closed by COVID-19 restrictions in March, Boer reported that CSG quickly shifted most of its services to telehealth. “We began to meet … via video conferencing and phone appointments,” she said, noting that state regulations were changed to allow for these opportunities. “It was a

big shift to implement, but it was something that our staff felt good about because they could safely meet with people,” said Boer, who noted that most clients said that they felt safer as well. “The move to telehealth allowed more flexibility in scheduling people (that the counselors had) met in community centers,” said Boer. The global pandemic impacted mental health, with CSG seeing an influx in need for services overall. Both counselors have continued to provide virtual appointments, which Boer said has gone well. State authorization for such visits has been extended until the end of 2020. Readers in Paradise may contact The Factory Ministries at 717-687-9594 about services. In New Holland, residents may call CrossNet at 717-355-2454. Individuals in either Paradise or New Holland may also call CSG directly at 877-907-7970 for more information about services. Boer mentioned that in the future when telemedicine is less prevalent, callers should mention if they want TCC or CrossNet when they call.

conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.” To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him not seeing anything he had done since middle school.” Cody Wood is known as an animation artist, and he has been featured on Cartoon Network, but he switched hats for his first book illustration, winning Weaver’s praise. Weaver plans to feature herself and Wood on her website, where they will read the book together, talk about the questions, and even sing the song. “Isn’t that fun?” Weaver asked. “People can meet the author and the illustrator on the site.” Weaver agreed that the appeal of the book is broader than the Christian market and that the lesson of kindness is especially timely. “We learn through stories,” she said. “We are opened to truth through stories.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www.shelleenweaver.com.

the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “ When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.” Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’

A few months ago, the Garden Spot Pennysaver asked area residents to name their hometown heroes. Ruthie Horning, a volunteer with the New Holland Ambulance Association, wrote to tell us about EMS chief Darrell Fisher, saying, in part, “Darrell is available … for his EMTs when they face a difficulty while on an emergency call. Having the knowledge that my chief is willing to get out of bed at 2 a.m. to back me up is incredibly reassuring. Even with all the leadership work he (provides), Darrell is willing to fill a position on the ambulance when needed.” Horning also mentioned Fisher’s service as a member of the Lancaster County EMS Council. “I live in the area, so I help out,” said Fisher modestly. Fisher has been involved with the New Holland Ambulance Association since he was a teenager. “My brother was an EMT at Ephrata, and seeing him leave for calls caught my attention,” said Fisher. Hesitant to be the subject of an article (“The success of this place is not me,” he noted), Fisher was quick to turn the conversation to the more than 100 volunteers and five paid staff members involved with the ambulance association. “Someone is here 24/7,” said Fisher, who noted that administrative duties are handled by paid staff at the nonprofit entity. The New Holland station covers New Holland Borough and about half of East Earl, meeting up
persistent that Fisher should take the job he now professes to love. Fisher became fulltime in 2011, and he graduated from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences as a paramedic in 2014. Fisher noted COVID-19 has wrought significant changes in the way the association operates. “We are fortunate to have medical director Dr. Michael Reihart,” said Fisher. “He has been amazing deciphering the best path forward, such as how we use our personal protective equipment.” He added that the board was generous in providing whatever the staff needed, including UV devices and sprays. “We wear masks on every call, and if a person has any symptoms, there are tiers of layers that we (add),” said Fisher. While Fisher is glad that the staff is safer, he acknowledges that changes interfere with the connection to community members. “When you put on your gloves, mask, and goggles, you lose that,” he said. “Our volunteers (and staff) do this to help people. We are surrounded by an unbelievable community.” Each January, the association offers area residents a chance to become more educated in the field of emergency medicine. “We do our own EMT program every year,” said Fisher. “That’s a lot of work, but it’s a team effort.” Readers who would like to learn more about the ambulance association may visit www.newhollandambulance. com.

graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “ We make breakfast burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her.

Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill,
“There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure camping is for them, Shady Maple RV offers rentals, starting with pop-up campers and ranging to motorhomes. “Demand for rentals went up (this year),” said rental specialist Lynnette Morris. “The majority of rentals were out every weekend this year,” she noted, adding that some days she has turned away more than 20 people.

Covering Each School In Prayer BY ANN MEAD ASH
If the words “moms in prayer” call forth a picture of mothers of school-age children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms in Prayer International. Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “ We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private,

Prayer ministry. “I told my ladies last week that perhaps the most important part is at the very end when the prayer sheet says to remember that what is prayed in the group stays in the group,” shared Forry. “We absolutely stress confidentiality.” Moms in Prayer began in California in 1984 and is now active in 140 countries. Forry believes groups in Lancaster County have been active for at least 30 years. “It was formerly called Moms in Touch, but they had a name change

Lastly, there is a time for intercession, where moms pick one child of their own to pray for, but the group also prays for teachers, school concerns, and the Moms in

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. An auction will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the family of Nate Smucker, who died in May. He is survived by his wife, Becca, and their three children, with a baby girl due in January. There is a fee per bike, with a higher fee for anyone traveling with a passenger. including a state coordinator, regional coordinators, and area coordinators. In Lancaster County, Mary Beth Will oversees Warwick, Manheim Central, Donegal, and Elizabethtown school districts, while Lynn Herr oversees Columbia, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Solanco school districts. Forry oversees any districts that do not have an area coordinator, working with local leadership in that area. “We are praying for God to raise up more area coordinators to fill in the areas that have none,” said Forry. The traditional Moms in Prayer group prays for a single school, but there are also grandma groups, churchbased groups, homeschool groups, military groups, prison-focused groups, and working moms groups. There are also language-based groups that speak a language other than English. “We want women to be able to pray in their native language,” said Forry. Another group focuses on prodigal children. “A huge part of our ministry is supporting women who are standing in the gap and interceding for their children,” said Forry. Women who are interested in joining a local group should visit www.MomsInPrayer.org and click on “Get Involved” and then “Join a Group.” From there, Forry says to click on “USA” and then complete and submit the form so a leader can get in touch.

(seniors), we want to make sure there is a place to sit, and we want to follow the rules,” said Good. “We don’t want to encourage too much socializing.” Portable toilets with adjacent handwashing stations will also be on site. Organizers wanted the Food Fest to benefit a local nonprofit, and the issues associated with COVID-19 had caused GSFR difficulties with fundraising. “ We’re going to make this a fundraiser for the fire company and an event that everybody can come out to,” said Good. “(Attendees) can enjoy food and the profits and nonprofits can all put money back in to benefit the fire company.” Good explained that each vendor was asked to contribute 15% from the profits of the event. Nonprofit organiza-
tions that take part will be asked to put out a boot or helmet to accept donations. “If anyone wants to donate more, that’s fantastic, but we realize that other businesses are hurting as well,” said Good. The event was timed to cover two of the nights when the fair would have been held and to coincide with the New Holland Youth Livestock Exposition on Oct. 2. “We have been pleased with the community response,” said Good. “A lot of people have said they’d like to get out for a little bit and enjoy some good food and do something different than the routine they have been following,” he added. scholarship fund.” Rothacker explained that partial scholarships could lower the cost of a program significantly. According to Rothacker, virtual shows are similar to live shows, but they offer an additional multimedia presentation. Different programs are developed for high school and college-age students. “I take a program and present it differently to each audience,” said Rothacker. “With elementary or preschool, it is heavier on interactive hand motions and repeating words.” For older students, Rothacker may tackle weightier subjects. The saga Rothacker calls “Our Virtual Journey” began when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions in March. “May through September is our main season for programs,” said Rothacker, who noted that of 200 yearly shows, about 150 occur in spring and summer. “Our season was crushed,” he said. The situation sent Rothacker on a mission to provide contactfree safe options that will give the schools some of the tools they need for environmental science supplements that include classroom visitors. Rothacker was initially hesitant to go virtual, but he moved forward, investing in lighting, a greenscreen, and other electronic equipment, and he soon began to recognize the power of virtual presentations. “With alligators, they have more than a thousand sensory organs that look like little black dots on their faces and tongues,” he said. “In person, the closest our audience gets is about 6 feet, but (virtually) when we do a closeup, they can see the little black dots.” Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reptile rescue and education group that has been based in Lancaster County since 2004. The Red Tornado’s Gloriany Fred-Torres suffered a 6-4 loss to Chernovsky, but responded with a 6-4 win and a 10-4 tiebreaker. The Spartans fell to 0-6 on the year. CROSS COUNTRY The Garden Spot boys’ team raced against Lancaster Catholic and Lampeter-Strasburg in a Wednesday afternoon run at L-S. The Pioneers won the race with a 17-44 defeat of Catholic and 1548 defeat of the Spartans. The Crusaders edged the Spartans 22-35. While a trio of L-S runners packed the top three spots and five of the top six in the race, Zane Kauffman led Garden Spot with a seventh-place finish at 17:39. Alexander McFalls ran the race in 18:15, finishing 12th. Josiah Martin (18:29) finished 15th. In the girls’ race, the host school again claimed victory, edging Catholic 24-31 and the Spot squad 19-37. The Crusaders topped the Spartans 20-35. Cloe Martin had an excellent pace for the Spartans, coming in at number six with a time of 22:33. Returning senior Amanda Coblentz finished ninth (22:43) while Nicole Kelch (23:34) and
PENNYSAVER Miryam Ambriz (24:11) took 13th and 14th, respectively. GIRLS’ SOCCER In their season opener at L-L League foe Lampeter-Strasburg, the Spartans were able to stave off 21 of the Pioneers’ 23 shots on goal. Molly Bucher and Hannah Gawne did break through for two first-half goals to give the Pioneers a 2-0 victory. Karli Brenneman and Liz Deardoff provided the assists. GOLF Garden Spot’s Zach Lessley shot a 20-over-par 91 in Monday’s league championship tournament at Meadia Heights Golf Club. Lessley finished in a tie for
29th place. Holt Albertson’s 95 put him in a three-way tie for 37th place. Justin Kemper (103) and Zane Fisher (104) were one stroke apart, finishing 51st and tied for 52nd, respectively. Cameron Proviano’s 107 earned him a fourway tie for 56th place while Lessley shot a 108 to finish tied for 60th. For the regular season, the Garden Spot golf team finished atop the Section Two standings with a 22-2 record. Their match with rivals Elizabethtown, Solanco, Conestoga Valley, Ephrata and Manheim Central included a close finish in which the Spar-
tans edged E-town 348-349. In this match up at Fox Chase on September 18, Zach Lessley was the winner with a score of 77. Albertson shot an 88 while Proviano recorded a 90 and Kemper also finished with a 93. Lessley finished second in the race for the section scoring title. Market Benefits Ephrata Farm And Art Market Open Through October
When COVID-19 restrictions hit, businesses with services related to live entertainment lost business. Brian Gilpin, owner of Illusion Sound and Lighting of Ephrata, was among them. Looking to diversify, Gilpin contacted business acquaintance Annaruth Diller in mid-July. By July 25, Diller had organized Ephrata Farm and Art Market, which is now held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1185 Division Highway (Route 322), Ephrata Gilpin’s place of business. “We’re still growing as people become more aware of (the market),” said Diller on a recent Saturday when about a dozen vendors had set up
awnings at the spot. “Normally we have about 18 vendors,” noted Diller. Vendors are located on the west side of the building, with parking on the right. “The chicken barbecue is here weekly,” said Diller, referring to the origin of a pleasant aroma from the stand located closest to Route 322. Other food vendors include two bakers, and some stands carry produce. “We have artists who are here every week,” Diller noted. Vendors who sell knitted items such as hats, scarves, and shawls are on-site alongside jewelry crafters, and makers of home décor. Jewelry vendors - both handmade and home business representatives - also take part in the See Benefits pg 12

temple community, explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in, Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given, she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what. A small group began meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge, said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children, Selfon said. The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came, recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be, said Selfon, who noted that the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs, said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “We called for an (online) meeting of the steering committee, and we agreed to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs. The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro House and the Lancaster County Food Hub. “The bottom line is that I would not have written a check for $750 to either one of them (by myself) said Selfon, who noted what a delight it was to see the faces of the group members when the organizations were told about the funds they would receive. “We were all awestruck that 17 of us could do this, and we felt it made a big impact for the two organizations we gave money to. With the group formed and distributing funds, members are now looking to expand. “Women at other temples are being asked to join, said Selfon. Selfon hopes to grow the group to about 40 or more members to make an even bigger impact. She pointed out that members need not be of the Jewish faith. “We say a prayer at the beginning of the meeting, but the rest of it is about doing good, she said. “It’s about women working together to make the world as good as it can be. Readers who would like more information may contact Temple Shaarai Shomayim at 717-397-5575.

son brighter for more than 9,700 children in the six states where Sheetz operates. In partnership with Make-AWish, funds raised during the campaign also sponsor wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. The charity sponsors one child per Sheetz operating district, totaling 55 children this year. Furthermore, to broaden the connection to the communities it serves, Sheetz For the Kidz recently announced a $620,000 donation to Feeding America to provide food to children in need. This commitment equates to approximately 10,000 meals per store. There are many ways customers can support Sheetz For the Kidz throughout the year by purchasing a Sheetz For the Kidz water, with 25 cents from each bottle directly supporting the charity; shopping on AmazonSmile and selecting “Sheetz For the Kidz” as the charity of their choice so that Amazon will donate 0.5% of purchases to the charity; and donating online at www.sheetz.com/ftk. Sheetz For the Kidz is a nonprofit organization, designated as a 501(c)(3) charity, independent of the Sheetz Corporation. The organization was created in 1992 by local store employees wanting to help local children. The mission of the charity is to provide support, hope, joy and happiness to children in need within the communities in which Sheetz operates. To date, the charity has impacted more than 119,500 children living in the communities Sheetz serves.
