Poontajak explained, “We need a recruiter from each church to ask church members to walk, and then the walkers ask for sponsors.” After the event was held virtually in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, the 2021 CROP Hunger Walk will be held in person. serve more than 500 ELANCO School District children who regularly receive free lunches or who have been financially affected by COVID-19 restrictions. To provide the program, CrossNet offers area residents the opportunity to take part in one or more of three giving programs. First, participants may choose to sponsor a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. Individuals and groups that would like to sponsor a family should contact CrossNet at 717-355-2454 by Thursday, Nov. 11, so Kerstetter can match donors with families.

The second option is to bring a toy to a local donation bin. Kerstetter has 20 toy collection bins to be placed in churches, businesses, or other areas of the community. Organizations that would like a bin to fill may contact CrossNet. Toys that may be placed in bins include miniature cars, sports equipment, children’s books, action figure toys, Legos, board games, educational baby toys, craft sets, and stocking stuffer items. Items should be placed in bins by Thursday, Dec. 2. A third way to take part in the program is to give to the stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, glow sticks, harmonicas, candy, chewing
gum, earbuds, lip balm, travel-size personal items, hair accessories, sticky notes, stickers, small puzzles, wallets, jewelry sets, and beef jerky. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to the CrossNet Youth Center at 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, by Wedneday, Dec. 8. Donation hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Dec. 6, 7, and 8. On Saturday, Dec. 11, sponsored families will come to CrossNet to pick up their gifts. Kerstetter explained that recipients will receive their gifts; a Christmas meal,
including a whole ham, potatoes, and all the fixings to cook; and cookies, along with wrapping paper and tape. “They can wrap gifts there or at home,” Kerstetter said. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols at the time of the pickup will be practiced. Adult volunteers are needed to help sort incoming gifts during the week prior to the event, and some volunteers will be needed on Dec. 11. Donations of wrapping paper and tape will be appreciated as well. Readers who wish to volunteer may call the CrossNet office or email lisa@elancocross.org.

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its annual apple dumpling sale on Friday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. until sold out. Proceeds will go to the Back to the Cloister Fund, which allows the Cloister museum to compete with private collectors and other institutions on the open market for original items made at the Cloister. Over the years, proceeds from the apple dumpling sale have been used to purchase one-ofa-kind furniture, rare music manuscripts, and the original 1739 deed to the historic site.
More than 100 items have been purchased since the creation of the fund more than 40 years ago. Interested individuals are encouraged to make their purchases early. Preorders are welcome, and free delivery within 10 miles of the Ephrata Cloister is offered for preorders of 20 or more dumplings. No admission is required to purchase apple dumplings. Those picking up apple dumplings may also visit the museum store’s porch sale to browse the discounted items. There will be a storewide sale inside.

this year, walkers can designate some of the funds they raise to go to Haiti to help alleviate hunger problems related to the Aug. 14 earthquake that struck that country. But the impact is not only overseas. Local food pantries benefit by receiving 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk nearest them. In ELANCO, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank will both benefit. In the Conestoga Valley area, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services Food Pantry will receive funds. Weaver noted that the New Holland Area CROP Hunger Walk has raised an average of $10,000 annually for about the last five years. Information about the walk may be found at www.crop hungerwalk.org. Those who wish to register teams made up of youth group or family members or co-workers may do so at https://events.crop hungerwalk.org/2021/event/ newhollandpa.
