Thriving Under Extraordinary Circumstances By Chelsea Peifer
Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 7

Studebaker from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
On a rainy Friday morning at the end of August, Mary Henning stood outside the home where she grew up more than 50 years ago on Old Philadelphia Pike in the Bridgeport area. “There was an empty field here, and we had an extensive garden,” said Mary of the farm her parents bought in 1960. “My dad learned the electrical trade, but he never left the farm,” she added, recalling that she and her four siblings spent their summer days doing chores. “We children were thrilled to go back to school,” said Mary. “The other students would complain that they were bored over the summer, but we had worked shelling peas.” Mary’s attention on Aug. 23 was called to the second floor of the barn located just adjacent to the house. Using a type of lift, Pieter Hegeman, a local landscaper and lifelong friend of Mary’s brother, John, who died due to cancer, was working to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor. The car has been awaiting restoration since about 1965, when Mary’s father, Martin Greider, used a block and tackle, ramps, and the driving skills of his son, Martin Jr., to move the car to its lofty perch. Concerned about some limbs on an oak tree on the property, Mary had contacted Hegeman as she was preparing the place for auction on Sept. 28. The two were walking the property sharing memories of their childhoods when Tim DeGraves, who was also a friend of John’s, pulled into the driveway in a sports car. “I introduced him (to) Pieter, and they started talking about the car,” said Mary. DeGraves remembered the Studebaker on the second floor of the barn, and the trio made their way up the stairs to see it. The year 1948 was special to Hegeman because it was the year that his parents began their landscaping business in Holland. It did not take Hegeman long to decide he would like to purchase the car, restore it, and take Mary’s parents, Martin and Elizabeth, who are both 92 and living in Lancaster area retirement communities, for a ride. Martin courted Elizabeth in the Studebaker. Martin was from Manor Township. Elizabeth lived in Blue Ball. Both graduated high school in 1945. Martin had a draft deferment because he worked on the farm, so he served stateside. Elizabeth attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, graduating in 1948. When Martin was a hospital patient, he met a few of Elizabeth’s friends who were nurses, and he attended Elizabeth’s graduation party as the date of one of them. In the fall of 1949, one of Elizabeth’s classmates came from Sunbury to visit. The two took the bus from Blue Ball to Lancaster, where her friend picked up a ride home. Elizabeth went to the YWCA to keep busy until the bus arrived to take her home, but Martin saw her waiting and offered her a ride to Blue Ball. The pair married on April 15, 1950, and they had five children, including Suzanne Tunis and George Greider. Martin Jr. and Suzanne have died of cancer. Mary’s memories of the farm are plentiful. “We had rabbits, geese,” she recalled. “We always wanted a dog, but animals had to serve a functional purpose,” she added, noting that her father brought the children twin calves to raise. One of the calves caused a bit of trouble. They called him Ferdinand. “One day he got loose, and I made a flying tackle and landed on him and sat on him until my siblings got there to help,” said Mary. Extracting the car from the second floor of the Greider barn was no easy task for
Hegeman. Mary’s father had built a framework and shelves over the car. Hegeman and his crew spent six hours on Aug. 19 taking out the barn window and putting the car in position to remove it using the lift apparatus Hegeman rented. Hegeman, who remembers his parents having Studebakers when he was growing up, plans to restore the car and take it out for parades and shows.

CROP Walk from pg 1 Pictured on front: Workers prepare to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor of a barn located on Old Philadelphia Pike in Bridgeport. Pieter Hegeman, who recently purchased the car, had it moved from the perch, where it has rested since 1965, on Aug. 23.
“It’s the 50th anniversary of CROP Walk,” noted Weaver, who added that walkers in the New Holland area have been gathering to help raise money to provide food and water to those in need locally and worldwide for 42 years. This year, seven local churches are participating. CROP Walks are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS).
According to CWS, CROP Walk funds can transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need. Funds raised by CROP help dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In some countries, people travel an average of 6 kilometers to obtain clean water. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have
to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities. Members of participating churches may talk to their CROP Walk recruiter to register for the fundraiser. Community members may also preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org by searching for “New Holland CROP Hunger Walk.” Readers who have questions may call Cedar Grove Church at 717-354-5573.

www.the3day.org. PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) will host its annual PBCC Conference on Oct. 18 at Hilton Harrisburg. Nearly 1,000 breast cancer survivors, nurses, doctors, radiologists, social workers, caregivers, researchers, and advocates will gather for networking, workshops, shopping opportunities, and more. PBCC also posts a list of upcoming events and fundraisers on its website at www.pabreastcancer.org, along with information on a variety of resources.
Thrive And Grit from pg 1 mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.”
Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them See Thrive And Grit pg 8

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its Community Days on Friday, Oct. 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the Colonial days, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread, and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick. These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as an interactive educational program during Community Days. The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each station offering a 10- to 15-minute look at subjects such as lighting, clothing, baking, carpentry, and writing

The Polka Quads will present a concert of Cleveland-style polka music on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 407 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Leading the Polka Quads and playing accordion will be John Salov of Steelton in Dauphin County. Additional band members are Jeff Dermes, accordion; Mark Dubravec, drums; and Vinny Hurochic, bass guitar. According to Salov, Clevelandstyle polka music is based on the tradition of immigrants from Croatia and Slovenia, and it features the accordion prominently. Salov said he was inspired to play the accordion and lead a polka band by the music of Cleveland’s Frankie Yankovic. Yankovic won the title of “America’s Polka King” at a band competition in 1948. He had a hit with his recording of “Blue Skirt Waltz,” based on a Slovenian song, in 1949 and won the first Grammy award for best polka recording in 1986. The “Blue Skirt Waltz” will be on the Polka Quads’ program at the Eicher Center. The program is part of a series of free, Sunday afternoon cultural and entertainment events at the historic Eicher House. While admission is free, donations will be accepted for the nonprofit Eicher Arts Center Inc. Refreshments will be provided.

Kim Beacham sweep with a 25-19 defeat of the 25, Section Two loss to visiting Conestoga Valley on September 27 by Ara Grigorian
After a 1-0 defeat of Solanco on Monday, September 30, and a 1-0 loss at Elizabethtown two days later, the Garden Spot field hockey team faced a 5-5-0 league mark and a 7-7-0 record overall. Goalie Bryna Kelly played two excellent matches, making six saves to earn a shutout versus Solanco. Erin Gonzalez scored in the first half for the only offense Kelly and her defense needed. Garden Spot out-shot the visiting
made 14 saves for the Mules. The Bears managed to get one shot past Kelly on Wednesday. She recorded three saves in a tight defensive Section Two battle at E-town. VOLLEYBALL Led by Logan Martin and Abby O’Neill, the Garden Spot girls’ volleyball team took a huge Section Two match at home over Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, October 1. The Spartans opened with a 25-18 victory and dominated the second set by a 25-12 count before finishing off their 3-0
Pioneers. The win improved the Spartans’ record to 7-1 in the LancasterLebanon League (10-1 overall). Martin poured in 11 kills in the victory and registered one block. O’Neill distributed 24 assists. “Abby O’Neill does a good job getting teams out of system,” said Lauren DiPiano, the Spartans head coach. “The setter is the quarterback of the team. She is figuring out ways to get us going. “Logan Martin, our middle, is a dynamic weapon for us,” continued the
coach. “She’s a high energy player. She’s one of our taller girls. She’s a junior and a lot of fun to watch.” The victory was crucial in keeping the Spartans atop the Section Two standings as Elizabethtown kept pace. “Elizabethtown is a talented team,” said Garden Spot alumna DiPiano who, during her days playing as Lauren Horst, faced all the Section Two rivals. “We beat them in a five-set match the first time we played them this year. They’ve been
rivals for a lot of years, so there’s a history there.” As the team looks at its four remaining L-L League matches down the home stretch, the post-season looms largely with a number of possibilities for this experienced squad. “We need to take care of business,” DiPiano said of the home stretch. “Each day I tell the girls that this is where we want to be. We can’t be complacent with just winning, but how to be better day in and day out.” Garden Spot (10-2) is second in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings behind Palmyra - a team the
Spartans lost to by a 3-1 score on Thursday evening. “We served very well the first game,” DiPiano said, referring to the 25-19 win. “They started to do a few things differently. We couldn’t pass as well. “They [Cougars] have a lot of offensive weapons,” she added. “We made a few errors here and there. They were able to capitalize on them.” The Cougars posted winnings scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-15 for their comeback win. O’Neill served up three aces and dished out 20 assists while Olivia Usner led the team in kills with seven.

The Spartans beat both schools in close races, 16-39 over both teams. The girls’ team blanked both opponents despite Hannah Schneider of Cocalico winning the race in a time of 23:49. Logan Martin came through with six kills. Senior Kelly Martin claimed 11 digs and sophomore Julia Ellsworth added two blocks. FOOTBALL Coming off their second L-L League loss of the year, the Spartans faced Conestoga Valley in a Section Two clash that nearly netted the Spartans their first win of the season. In fact, Garden Spot took a comfortable 18-0 lead in the first quarter on the Buckskins’ home turf on Friday, September 27. However, the Buckskins shaved 10 points off that lead in the second quarter and outscored the visitors 27-7 in the second half for a 37-25 win. The Spartans fell to 0-6 (0-3 league) while CV improved to 2-4, 2-1. Jesse Martin captained the Spartans’ offense to the count of 91 passing yards on seven completions, including a touchdown, plus his quick legs gaining Garden Spot 130 yards on the ground. Martin escaped would-be tacklers and dashed 46 yards to the end zone for the game’s first score. After a John Dykie one-yard surge across the goal line, Walker Martin kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 18-0. The Buckskins’ comeback began with a Nathan Heck chip shot as he made a 20-yard field goal. It was then that Bradley Stoltzfus started spotting his receivers and racked up 351 yards of passing on 17 completions, hitting Keaghan Sweigart for two of his four TD passes. Sweigart was on the receiving end of 163 yards on five catches. Zach Fisher also had five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Dykie finished the game with two touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving. He had 92 rushing yards on 19 carries, being the work horse of the Garden Spot running game. Dykie caught three passes for 40 yards, including a 15-yard scoring pass from Martin in the fourth quarter. BOYS’ SOCCER The Spartans were part of two consecutive heartbreaking defeats on the soccer pitch. They suffered a 1-0 loss to Lancaster Catholic in a non-league game on Monday, September 30. The following day they lost 2-1 to Section Two foe Elizabethtown on the road. All of the scoring in the E-town match took place in the second half. Adam Evans had put the Bears up 1-0 six minutes into the second half. Walker Martin tied it nine minutes later off a Brandon Sensenig assist. David Fry came through for the home team in the 77th minute, spoiling a great game in goal for sophomore Samuel Armbruster (9 saves). Armbruster had four saves in the game against the Crusaders. Danny Biondolillo scored seven minutes into the match and the Catholic defense made that slim lead stand up. Garden Spot fell to 0-12-2 (0-7-0 league). GIRLS’ SOCCER Coming off a scoreless draw at Twin Valley on Monday, a game in which Marissa Spacht made seven saves, the Spartans came home the following night to face Elizabethtown on Tuesday, October 1. The Bears got early goals by Amber Bstdorf, Sophia Berry and Kaelynn Sheetz on their way to a 4-1 victory. Mataya Hostetter scored Garden Spot’s lone goal right before halftime

about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.” Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community. Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.” Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.” There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. A freewill offering will be received to defray expenses associated with the event. A portion of the offering will be designated for Faith and Friendship Ministries, which is the sponsor of the service. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal. More than 56,000 citizens have received the honor. On Nov. 21, 1949, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower presented 200 recipients with the first Freedoms Foundation National Awards. The ceremony took place in a barn on a Colonial farm once occupied by Washington’s troops, which is now the site of the national headquarters of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. “Journey Into Darkness” was begun by Moore in 1960 while he was in high school. He decided to continue the project, and writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed. The years passed as the author went off to college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. More than 20 years later, Moore was telling the story on a camping trip and one of the listeners, Charley French, offered to represent Duane Kinkade photographically if Moore

According to David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promo-
would finish writing the story. Over the next four years, “Journey Into Darkness” evolved as a four-book series. French and friends did annual photo shoots over this time. Moore self-published the second title in the series, “Up From Corinth,” through Xlibris Publishing in July 2011. It was followed a year later by the remaining three books in the series. The following year, the entire series was released as the novel “Journey Into Darkness,” comprising each book. At the same time, two other novels were published, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Blake’s Story.” Omnibook Company of New York, N.Y., through its agent, Andy Sullivan, has become Moore’s current publisher. Over the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019, “Journey Into Darkness” was republished in three formats. Currently, “Summer” and “Blake’s Story” are in development for release in October. In the process of republishing, the two Civil War titles were expanded to add full reference sections in the back. “Journey” earned the Silver Book Medal

The event has been a school tradition for years, and this year’s event is open to the public. The Great Pumpkin Chase event will feature a 1-mile, timed cross-country run through the park, during which children through sixth grade will try to beat “The Pumpkin” - a school administrator dressed as a fall gourd. Medals will be awarded to the top 10 boy finishers and top 10 girl finishers. There is no minimum age to run. There will also be a 100-yard dash Tot Trot for participants under age 5, who will
dash to “The Pumpkin.” All Tot Trot finishers will receive a small pumpkin to decorate after the run. In addition to the races, the morning festivities will include inflatables, face painting, and carnival-style games for the whole family. Food will be available for purchase on-site. This Fall Fest portion of the event is run by the Veritas student government, with proceeds helping to cover costs for various school events. WJTL’s Kids Cookie Break will also be broadcasting live. Families can register at www.veritas academy.com/pumpkin-chase.
Dance Company To Hold Shoe Drive Laurel Dance Company will conduct a shoe drive fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 13, from noon to 5 p.m. to raise funds for proper studio equipment and scholarships for students. Participants may donate gently worn, used and new shoes at the studio at 514 E. Main St., Ephrata. Laurel Dance Company will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit the studio needs and allow Laurel Dance to provide scholarships to students who would otherwise be unable to participate in its dance programs.
All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house the entrepreneurs’ families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti earned enough to send to her son to law school. For more information about Laurel Dance Company, readers may visit www.laureldance.org.
