Group Offers Personal Hunger Experience few years ago, Brandon Adams, a graphic designer with Garden Spot Village (GSV), felt a calling. “The Lord was prompting me to do something in the New Holland area with Missions of Hope International (MOHI),” recalled Adams, who had taken mission trips and spent two months working with the organization in Kenya. “I went to chaplain Chet Yoder (to consult him about the matter).” The result is a partnership between MOHI and GSV, which includes sponsoring children in the Mathare Valley, Nairobi, Kenya, and a two-week Travel with Purpose mission trip to the region in February 2022, which will be led by Adams and GSV chaplain Karyn Nancarvis. The 12 members of that team will host a Hunger Experience for area residents in the GSV Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. “It’s an educational experience,” explained Nancarvis. The experience is free, but seating is limited. Those

wishing to attend should preregister by Tuesday, Oct. 26, by searching for “Hunger Experience” at www.eventbrite.com. Masks will be required at the event. During the Hunger Experience, participants will be assigned an identity and encouraged to roleplay that person in an interactive setting. Food that will be involved in the event will reflect what the person each participant was assigned may have had to eat that day. “The food participants will receive will help teach the reality of how people around the world in different classes eat,” explained Adams. The goal is for participants to gain a better understanding of food distribution and poverty by understanding the realities of worldwide food access. The Travel with Purpose team is made up of GSV staff members and residents ranging in age from 39 to their early 80s. Adams explained that MOHI specifically works with people in need in the urban slums of the Mathare Valley. On the trip, the group will visit the children’s homes and school and hold a twoday vacation Bible school for the See GSV pg 4

Karl Stoltzfus, one of the leaders of ELANCO Celebrate Recovery (CR), is clear about the heart of the ministry. “No one comes into recovery on a winning streak,” said Stoltzfus. “We are all here admitting that we are broken and we need connection and we need God. There’s no shaming in that, and I think that comes across in what we do here.” See ELANCO CR pg 7

Historical Society Plans Free Program

TPSP To Premiere One-Act Play The People’s Shakespeare Project (TPSP) will return to live theater with a new, original play, “Witch … Love, Loss and the Mystery,” written by Laura Korach Howell, TPSP’s executive artistic director. The performances will take place on Fridays to Sundays, Oct. 29 to 31 and Nov. 5 to 7, with a nightly 7:30 p.m. curtain time. The play will be performed at the barn at Historic Rock Ford, located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, in Lancaster County Central Park. “Witch … Love, Loss and the Mystery” is a departure from TPSP’s full Shakespeare productions. It was inspired by Shakespeare, but is just as much about his personal struggles as it is about his characters and plays. In the play, the Three Witches from “Macbeth” sense an imbalance in the universe. Shakespeare is stuck, and to get him unstuck they must stage an intervention and call on some of his memorable women to assist them in this

effort. This one-act play combines the language of Shakespeare with modern English. With a cast of three, plus one disembodied Voice, the play is full of humor even as it explores the depths of human emotions and the need for poetry in the world. The play was developed and is being directed by Howell and Sena Taskapilliohlu, a theater artist from Istanbul. Howell is a local Equity actress, teacher, director, playwright and roster artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She received her training at Circle-in-theSquare Theatre, The Actor’s Center in New York City and Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts. In 2006, her passion for Shakespeare led her to found TPSP, a nonprofit organization devoted to sharing the joys of Shakespeare through instruction and performance. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.peoples shakespeareproject.org or for a higher fee at the door. This production is approximately

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will present an educational program on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata, at 7 p.m. The program, “Native Americans,” will focus on the culture, history, and life of native peoples as told by Uhma Ruth Py, a Lenni Lenape descendant. Py’s presentation will include pictures

and artifacts with a goal to foster a respectful awareness of her ancestors. The meeting will also include a presentation of the names of proposed officers and trustees at large to the membership. The event is open free to the public. In accordance with the church’s guidelines, all attendees must wear a face covering. For details, call the HSCV at 717-733-1616.

ELANCO CR celebrated its four-year anniversary in September. The 12-step, Christcentered discipleship recovery program meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, in the Student Life Center. A hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m. Participation is not limited to those struggling with substance abuse, but it is also open to people experiencing a number of issues, including codependency, eating disorders, and anger. CR features worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, followed by small group meetings, which are divided by gender. On the second Thursday of each month, a live worship band, made up mostly of CR participants, takes part. Carol Musser, who leads the CR group with Stoltzfus, noted that the specific restrictions and situations related to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected participants but have not changed the dynamics of the group. “I see a ramp-up in anxiety in the culture,” said Musser, who noted that depression is on the rise as well. “It’s hard getting back to normal,” she added. “There’s fear plugged into places that

BOYS’ SOCCER The Spartans finished their regular season with an exclamation point, defeating Cedar Crest by a score of 6-2 as Trey Dwyer, who also had an assist on the day, and George Rohrbaugh each scored two goals. In this non-league home game played on Wednesday, October 13, the Spartans (9-5-1) went up 1-0 in 12th minute of the match. Dwyer scored his second goal of the game 12 minutes later and Nicklas Gleason, who had one assist as well, made it 3-0 in the 29th minute. one of the year for the Spartans (5-4-1 league). Garden Spot wrapped up the regular season ranked 11th in the District Three 3A power rankings. FIELD HOCKEY In its 5-0 shutout of Solanco back on October 5, the Garden Spot field hockey team improved to 9-1-0 in the L-L League. The Spartans held on to first place and claimed the Section Three title while compiling a solid 13-30 record overall. That placed the Spartans seventh in the District Three AA power rankings - just shy of Susquehannock. Garden Spot’s win streak ended at seven games in a tough 1-0 loss at Ephrata on Saturday, October 9. Three days later, the offense came through at crucial times, especially in overtime, for a 4-3 victory at Cedar Crest. This match was an uphill battle for the Spartans, who gave up three goals in the first quarter. Erin Gonzalez provided the scoring to start and to end the game. She scored in the opening minute of the first stanza. After Lauren Horning scored two goals - one in the second quarter and another in the fourth - Gonzalez sent everyone home with her gamewinner at the 11:58 mark of overtime. Horning also added an assist while Melanie Esh assisted on two goals. After giving up the three early goals, Bryna Kelly stayed undaunted in front of the Spartans cage, making seven saves. VOLLEYBALL In a tough L-L League match, the Spartans came up short against Lebanon 3-2 on Thursday, October 7. Other than Garden Spot’s 2516 victory in the first set, every other set was a close one. The

Cedars tied the match with a 2519 win in the second set and pulled ahead, winning 25-20. Garden Spot regained momentum and won 25-21 only to fall short in the tiebreaker, 15-12. The Spartans evened their league record at 5-5 (6-7 overall) by beating Cocalico 3-0 on Tuesday. The host Spartans posted winning sets of 25-6, 25-19 and 25-21. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Spartans fell to 2-8-0 in league play with a 4-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, October 12. Hannah Cissne, Chloe Bucher, Ashlynn Keys and Jenna Daveler each scored for the Pioneers. Garden Spot fell to 3-12-0 overall. CROSS COUNTRY The Garden Spot boys’ squad (5-5) outran Manheim Central 22-36 in a Section Two race at Central on Tuesday, October 12.

Despite Michael Greenwald posting a first-place finish at 18:04 for the Barons, the Spartans took second place through fourth in the race. Alan Krock was only one second behind Greenwald as he took second. Josiah Martin’s pace of 18:08 was good for third. Will Culbert was fourth overall. Another trio of Garden Spot runners crossed the line in successive order. Finn Wenrich took sixth at 19:08 while Thomas Watt registered 19:13 for seventh place. Evan Graham was eighth with 19:15. The girls team fell to 5-5, losing to Central 17-43. The top four finishers in the girls’ race were Central runners. Julia Hoover came across the finish line in fifth place, posting a time of 22:25 for Garden Spot. Nicole Kelch (23:30) was sixth. Hayley Zimmerman finished ninth at 24:46.

The first Steps to Success Trunk or Treat , which is open to the Conestoga Valley community, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the parking lot of the Zion Lutheran Church. The event will feature a number of decorated trunks, candy, free food, and the illusions of Papa Tater. According to Steps to Success founder and executive director Michelle Harbaugh, the event began as an outreach to parents of children who participate in the program after other planned activities were canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

“ We were hoping to do something outdoors, said Adriana Witman, school age program administrator with Steps. When the school approached the church about using the parking lot, church members were intrigued. “The church (membership) is really excited,” explained Harbaugh, who noted that the first two car owners to sign up to decorate their trunks were church members. Once the event was open to the church community, the protocol for the event became apparent. Both church members

and parents of children who attend Steps to Success have been invited to participate by decorating their trunks. Trunk themes will include Dr. Seuss and “Jurassic Park.” Organizers believe they can fit at least 40 cars in the ample lot behind the church. But candy offered from decorated trunks is only the beginning of the event. Food will include free hot dogs, chips, and beverages. Families that attend and follow the designated trickor-treat route are encouraged to dress up, and they will also have

the opportunity to enjoy the magic of Papa Tater. Tater, who specializes in comedy and illusions, has been performing in the Lancaster area for more than a decade. His shows are known for being interactive with the goal of both amazing and amusing his audience. More information on the program may be found by searching for “Steps to Success Christian Early Learning Center” on Facebook. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by calling 717-803-5441 or emailing adrianawitman.steps@gmail.com.
