Basketball Tournament To Benefit Youths When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a four-team men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. Holiday Bazaar from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
The mission committee of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church is planning to send 10 church members to Guatemala in May 2019 to work with Orphan Resources International (ORI). “We will be going to orphanages and helping with deliveries,” said committee member Margaret Sensenig, referencing ORI’s food delivery program. To help fund the trip, the committee has scheduled its annual holiday bazaar for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The bazaar will feature food and up to 20 vendors selling craft items and products offered by home-based businesses. Among the many vendors at the bazaar will be those that sell makeup, personal care items, cooking utensils and accessories, candles, children’s books, and brand-name bags. Crafters will sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, and handmade note cards and greeting cards. Each of the vendors will donate an item for the Chinese auction. Winners of the Chinese auction will be announced at 2 p.m. Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast
casseroles made with potatoes, egg, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Sandwiches, hot dogs, and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. Chicken corn soup will be sold by the bowl to eat at the bazaar or by the quart to take out. A variety of baked goods will be available as well. Funds raised by past bazaars have supported trips to Jerusalem and to Waxhaw, N.C., the home of JAARS, Wycliffe Bible Translators, and SIL International, all ministries that work to bring the Bible to people the world over. ORI is an Ephrata-based organization aiding orphans around the world with food and counseling, as well as by providing work teams that help care for children. Sensenig said the committee members hope the bazaar will raise $2,500 toward the trip. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-9519717 for additional information. Pictured on front: Working to organize the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church holiday bazaar are (from left) Margaret Sensenig, Deb Burns, and Betty Snyder. The event will be held at the church on Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Weaverland from pg 1 This year, as in the past, when the doors open at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, a variety of activities will be available for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers. “Inside, we will have lots of children’s games,” said Shannon Martin, one of the committee members organizing the event. Martin listed cornhole, a rubber band game, a football toss game, a duck pond game, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss game, along with face painting, among the activities that will be available inside the church. “There will be children’s prizes for every game,” she added, noting that pretzels, erasers, and stickers are examples of the prizes children will receive for playing the games. Outside the church, an inflatable obstacle course and a bounce house will be available, along with a corn dig. Live music outside will be provided by church members, and attendees may warm up around one of three fire pits or take part in a hayride. Free food that will be given away outside the church will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, and candy. Hot and cold beverages and snack foods, such as chips, will be given away as well. The idea behind the event, which will conclude at 8:30 p.m., is to offer a safe place for families to enjoy fun and fellowship. Costumes are welcome. Organizers noted that the 2017 event attracted 1,000 attendees, based on the number of soft pretzels that were given away. Approximately 150 church members help with the trick-or-treat alternative by working at the event or donating baked goods or candy and prizes. In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaverland.org for information.

“We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve selfesteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Ex perience, the event has helped to fund International Medical Relief, including eye and dental care in international locations; the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Park; School District of Lancaster programs that encourage literacy; Rotary Youth Leadership Camp; International Youth Study Exchange; and a variety of scholarships and grants.

Of the 30 organizations that will be represented at the 2018 Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Fair, 10 will be new to the event. Among those will be Lancaster Farm Sanctuary; Music for Everyone, known for placing pianos throughout downtown Lancaster; Faith Friendship Ministries; and The Edible Classroom. This year’s fair, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, will offer shoppers a variety of ways to purchase gifts that honor loved ones and help others. In addition, fairtrade items and food will be available for purchase, and an educational presentation for children will be included. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about the organization
may be found at www.lancaster farmsanctuary.org. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster County,” said Stengle. The story of Music for Everyone may be explored by visiting https:// musicforeveryone.org. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, said that the ministry cares for low-income individuals with mental health issues in a personal care facility based on the Nehemiah Homes model that offers interdependent living experiences. More information about the organization may be found at www.faithfriendship.org. Beth Horst, who founded The Edible Classroom with Grace Julian, said that they are excited to be working with local schools to create or maintain learning gardens. “We work to customize
a program for the teachers, and everything is hands-on and experiential,” said Horst, who noted that summer programming is offered as well. “From seed to table, (the students) learn how to plant, tend, harvest, and eat the food they have grown,” said Horst. Information about can be found by visiting www.theedible classroom.org. GTGH founder Jenn Knepper noted that this year, the fair will be held close to Monday, Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was first celebrated in 1948, making 2018 the 70th anniversary of the first observance. “We will have a scavenger hunt for the children to find various declarations of the articles for human rights from among the nonprofits at the event,” said Knepper. Participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. A staffed human rights display will offer information and provide interested parties with the opportunity to ask questions. Readers who would like to learn more about GTGH may visit w w w. g i f t s t h a t g i v e hope.org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook. Pictured on front: The Gifts

Chamber Plans Presentation The Lancaster Chamber will provide an opportunity for local leaders to get solutions to their workforce challenges and a chance to build connections with peers at the “Future of Workforce: Solving the Talent Shortage” event on Friday, Oct. 26, from 10:30a.m. to noon. The event will be held in conjunction with the chamber’s Business Expo at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. Using the most recent data from the “2018 Talent Shortage Survey,” information about what companies are doing to overcome workforce challenges will be shared. The presentation will challenge long-held misconceptions of the talent shortage issue and will cover strategies and specific examples of what companies can be doing in the current employment market. Attendees will learn about ideas that may be implemented immediately to help overcome their own talent and workforce challenges. There is a cost to attend. The Factory Ministries, in partnership with United Way of Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in Eastern Lancaster County, as they work to meet an increasing demand for free tax preparation assistance. VITA hopes to prepare an estimated 10,500 tax returns in spring 2019. Volunteers do not need to have tax expertise or experience, just a passion to help others, connect with their community, and engage in a program that is making an immediate economic difference in Lancaster County. United Way will provide free training to individuals willing to commit to volunteering as free tax preparers for VITA clients. Training takes place from November through January. VITA asks for four hours per week during tax season. Readers interested in signing up or learning more may contact Jaclyn Belew at belew@uwlanc.org.

ROFM from pg 1 leadership through Grand Canyon University. Feeling God leading him to a director’s position, he began looking about six months ago. Through his work with Teen Challenge, Jakubowski had met Larry Daughenbaugh, who was then director at ROFM. “At a meeting, Larry said he was looking at retiring and asked if I would be interested (in applying for the ROFM directorship), said Jakubowski, who waited for God’s guidance on the subject before telling Daughenbaugh that he would be interested. “For four to six weeks, I prayed on it with my wife, Angie, and family and council
in my life, including the executive director of Teen Challenge, said Jakubowski, who also began to meet with the ROFM board. About mid-June, after further discussion with Angie, Jakubowski felt confident that helming ROFM was God’s will for his life. Jakubowski’s timing in joining ROFM coincides with changes at the ministry. “It’s a brand-new season for our ROFM family, said Jakubowski. “We are going from a smaller cultural center to a much larger center as we move into the new building, he noted, referring to the former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball, which is in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM houses 15 men in buildings located along

Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the move. “We believe in quality over quantity, emphasized Jakubowski. “If we have 50 men, it (will be) because we have the staff and highquality programming to meet the needs of those men. He noted that ROFM hopes to move into the building between Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, and the advent of spring. Jakubowski noted that ROFM is known as the “say yes center. “We do have program fees, but we work with every family (to stay) within their means so we don’t have to turn anyone away for lack of funding, he explained.

A Message Of Support For Victims
To remain the “say yes center, the new building will include a thrift store located on the first floor. “In the world of nonprofit, faith-based programs, you need to develop streams of income to balance the budget and to support the program, explained Jakubowski. In addition to thrift items, the store will also sell items made by clients, including candles. Because of Jakubowski’s positions with Teen Challenge, he has developed relationships with members of the ROFM board, including Marvin Weaver and board chair Charlie Junkins. Jakubowski believes God is using those relationships, and he looks forward to developing more. “We hope to work with churches and local residents and businesses to sponsor students in the program, he said. “Not only do we want to see individuals have profound lifetransforming change, but we want to assimilate them into the community with a home church, employment, and support groups. Jakubowski’s vision includes partnering with area residents to immerse clients in the community. Jakubowski noted that readers should watch for ROFM teams around New Holland. “A team (will) go out to share their testimonies, said Jakubowski, who added that the team members also offer a resource to families who may want information about programs like ROFM. “Drug awareness and prevention is what we are (about), he said. The prints are somewhat reminiscent of those tiny candy hearts with the messages that circulate in early to mid-February. The photos line the walls of the gallery at the Emerald Center (The E), each bearing its own words, colors, and expressions. The exhibit is called “The Hardened Heart - Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and it will be on display at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, through Saturday, Dec. 15. Exhibit openings will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. A poster hanging near the exhibit asks “Is your heart represented? and it is natural for viewers to wander along the wall looking for the heart that bears the color and message they associate with their own. “Life’s experiences give us each a hardened heart, said Patricia Leese, widow of David Leese, the artist who created the hearts. “Some (experiences) are negative, but some (hearts) rise above, added Patricia. “You get knocked down, but you get back up and see life differently. David was both clever and creative in crafting each of the nearly 40 heart prints in the gallery. “The broken heart is actually two pieces that come together, even part of one of the letters (is split), pointed out Patricia. Two original plaster of Paris sculptures - “Melancholy Heart and “Young at Heart - are part of the exhibit to give viewers a threedimensional understanding of David’s creations. “David designed the lettering for a stencil (depending on the subject) of the heart, explained Patricia, who noted that the cold heart bears images reminiscent of ici-

Exhibit openings will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28, and Friday, Nov. 30. cles on its surface, the wounded heart bears a gash, and the “hole in my heart design has a small, round opening in it. Each heart is painted and coated with varnish. Coupled with another piece titled “Love, which he completed in 2013, David’s work forms a statement about the ways domestic violence and sexual assault can scar hearts. The “Love painting, which is 88 by 43 inches, appears to be an ode to the motifs of love, but when one looks closely, the border contains statistics about domestic violence against women, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy, and divorce rates, exposing the truth that can be behind the myth. During the exhibit, community members are invited to visit The E and have a photo taken with posters available near the exhibit. One is of a blue heart that reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from sexual assault, and the other is purple and reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from domestic violence. Photos may be shared to social media with the hashtag See Message pg 11

“Seven Keys” from pg 1 Dean Sauder, director of the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) production of “Seven Keys to Baldpate,” is at no loss for words when describing the show. “It’s mystery. It’s comedy. It’s melodrama. It’s farce,” stated Sauder, who added that the 1913 play by George M. Cohan has been on his shortlist for several years. With a cast of 18, an almost completely black-and-white set and costumes, and a couple of unexpected twists near the end, “Baldpate” will play in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25; Friday, Oct. 26; and Saturday, Oct. 27. The plot centers on writer William Magee, played by Noah Schnabel, who enters into a contest with his friend Irene Bentley, played by Grace Reinhart. The competition will have Magee writing a 10,000-word story within 24 hours, with Bentley providing him with a place of total solitude to complete the task. Magee heads to Baldpate Inn, a mountain getaway owned by Bentley. He locks himself in, with the understanding that he holds the only key. Almost immediately, Magee begins experiencing strange visitations. Among the intruders, all of whom seem to have keys to the inn, are a politician, a police officer, a hermit, a reporter, and a number of mobsters. Magee eventually learns that there are actually seven keys to

Baldpate, and in the LMHS production, each key is a different rainbow color to contrast with the set and costumes. One of the challenges of staging the show, according to Sauder, was the decision to go blackand-white. “We need an old-fashioned phone, and we have one, but it is brown,” explained Sauder, who said that his costumer is searching for appropriate clothing, and the crew is painting the set. “The costumes will be stunning,” noted Sauder. Another challenge was introducing students to comedy and dialogue set in the early 1900s. “Since it written in 1913 some of the lines you would not use today,” explained Schnabel. “It’s hard to say the words and put meaning behind them,” he added. “(It’s important to be) able to pronounce words and (convince) the audience that you know what they mean.” It has been interesting for the students to put on the personalities of over-the-top character roles. Rehearsals have been both fun and challenging, according to Merry Yirga, who plays Edith Quimby, an elderly caretaker. “A lot of us play characters that are very different from ourselves,” she observed. “I play an innkeeper who lives on top of a mountain and flirts with this writer.” Clayton Nafziger, who plays bad guy Jim Cargan, said that he has to think “mean” to get into character. Nafziger, who at 6 feet five inches is making it hard for Sauder to find costumes for
him, noted that his size helped him win the part. “I pick up three different people (during the show),”’ said a smiling Nafziger. Willa Beidler, who plays Myra Thornhill, said that the students have been having fun with the outlandish characters and exaggerated scenes. “The character work is (both) fun and difficult,” she noted. “It’s a satirical show, so you’re taking a melodramatic mystery character and amping it up.” Schnabel added that for audiences, the entire show should be fun. “The audience is drawn in by the humor and the mystery rather than (a) message,” he commented. Sauder has embraced the challenge of introducing the olderstyle production to students of the current day. He noted that writing the director’s note for the show program has been a challenge. “(The play is) typical George M. Cohan, which means nothing to this generation,” said Sauder. “It does now,” quipped a grinning Yirga. Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org/lancaster/fine-arts/ or by calling 717-740-2456. Tickets will be discounted for students.

He thought it had character, and he called it the hardened heart.” David served as director of education for the Bradley Academy of Visual Arts and fine art department chair for Antonelli

HOPE Breakfast from pg 1 In the Dominican Republic, where about 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty level, Esperanza provides a branch of HOPE that supports associates as they help themselves in an effort to alleviate poverty. Through savings groups, Esperanza can provide capital in a commitment to end poverty and foster transformation to those the organization serves. Nuñez began serving Esperanza in March 2012, when she became vice president of public affairs and Caribbean investment. Previously, Nuñez worked to coach and educate members of a major defense concern in every facet of business. She has a master’s degree from Belhaven College and bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University. She graduated from the Lifework Leadership Program in 2012. In the past several months, Bilindabagabo visited the Dominican Republic to see HOPE’s operations there firsthand. She was impressed by the number of women who are clients there. “We visited four clients, and three of the four were women,” shared Bilindabagabo, who especially remembered the story of Lina, a woman who ran a colmado, a convenience stand. “Her (colmado) was in a bus station, so she had constant traffic,” noted Bilindabagabo. “It was the only place to buy a snack or bottle of water before getting on the bus, which I thought was genius.” Bilindabagabo said that Lina’s story was especially memorable because Lina’s daughter had also started a business, which now employs Lina’s husband, Felix, who had hurt his back and was unable to perform other work. “(Lina’s) daughter realized that her mother’s colmado always needed paper products like cups and napkins,” explained Bilindabagabo, “But it is hard to get them (in the Dominican Republic).” The daughter, wisely, chose to start her own business buying and reselling paper products at a store not far from the bus station. “The story struck me because the daughter decided to start her own business because she saw her mother do it - the generational effects of entrepreneurship,” commented Bilindabagabo. To add a Dominican flair to the breakfast, Bilindabagabo has arranged for the buffet menu to include coffee and juice from the Dominican Republic, along with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and pancakes. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational.org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Saturday, Nov. 10. Individuals may register by calling 717-4643220, ext. 554, or emailing carley@hopeinternational.org.

Spartans Faced a Tall Task Against the Barons the opening period. The Barons added five more touchdowns in the second quarter, including Wagner’s 66-yard interception return and three more rushing touchdowns by Flick, who finished 107 yards on the ground on 11 carries. Chris Shaw added another 70 yards on 10 carries and scored one touchdown. Jesse Martin completed six passes for 63 yards for Garden Spot. Zeb Fisher, who caught two of those passes for 21 yards, ran for 29 yards on seven carries. Martin also ran for 25 yards. Fullmer talked about the effort by the Spartans despite the winless record thus far. “I’m proud of how they’re still working hard, even though the season isn’t working out the way we wanted it to,” he remarked. “Hopefully, we can build on this. “There are some seniors we’ll miss next year,” continued the coach. “But there are young guys getting Friday night experience, taking their lumps and learning.” Photo by Vinny Tennis GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Photo by Vinny Tennis Garden Spot’s Luke Shirk sets up to block on a Spartan running play in last Friday’s Section Two meeting with Manheim Central. The win kept Manheim Central unbeaten (5-0) in the Lancaster-Lebanon League as well as overall at 9-0. The Spartans fell to 06 and 0-9. “I thought we did a couple of good things, but also we gave up some big touchdowns,” Fullmer said. “We can’t make mistakes against a very good football team. “The interception return hurt us too,” he added. “That was after we forced a turnover and tried to make a big play. PENNYSAVER bethtown, which clinched the Section Two title. It set up a semifinal match against Manheim Township slated for this week. For the Spartans, it was yet another victory over a Lancaster-Lebanon League foe. The team had cruised through the regular season with a 10-0 league record and continued that streak into the playoffs “There is certainly more pressure from her on out to win matches,” Lei Williams, the head coach, stated. “The girls continue to play well as a team and have the goal to make it to the league finals. Our first goal was to win our section championship, which we did when we beat Elizabethtown on Wednesday.” The Spartans held off the Crusaders with the likes of Shawna Zeiset, Sarah Shirk, Olivia Usner and others leading the way. Zeiset poured in 23 kills and registered one block in the match. User led the team in aces, serving up six. Shirk contributed to the offense with 34 assists. Meanwhile, Kelly Martin had a match-high 11 digs while Logan Martin also put up one block. “We were able to keep a four- or five-point spread on for the most part,” Williams said of the three sets. “They did get close as 10-8 at one point, but we were able to get some separation.” Garden Spot had improved to 9-0 by beating Lebanon on Monday at home. It was senior night for the Spartans. “We had our seniors starting,” Williams said. “Shawna Zeiset, Sarah Shirk, Alanna Billy, Mandy Rider and Ashley Good are a group of girls with different forms of leadership for the team.” In very dominant fashion, the Spartans defeated Lebanon 25-11, 25-9 and 25-7 with Kelly Martin racking up a dozen digs and serving up nine aces on the night. Zeiset tallied nine kills while Shirk dished out 21 assists. Logan Martin tacked on the only block by Garden Spot. Williams said the team knew that the showdown at E-town was going to be intense with the section title on the line. “We beat them the first time when they came to Garden Spot,” she said. “We knew it was going to be scrappy and they would keep us on our toes in front of their fans on Wednesday. We served very well.” Zeiset, with 18 kills and Kelly Martin’s 24 digs and five aces helped the Spartans serve up a victory over a tough opponent, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21. “The third game we came from behind to win,” Williams noted. “Olivia was serving and Shawna was in the front row. We were tied 20-20 and pulled away.” Shirk came through with 27 assists while sophomore Elyse Mundorff racked up four blocks.

23rd Silent Samaritan Luncheon Club To Offer Moves To New Location Scholarship The Silent Samaritan Luncheon is a fundraiser for the Silent Samaritan Fund, which provides counseling and other services to women who do not have adequate funds to cover the cost, and the Silent Samaritan Endowment, a permanent fund started in 2015 in the names of Silent Samaritan Fund founders Linda Peacock and Alta Landis. The 2018 luncheon will be held at a new location, Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The luncheon has also been scheduled earlier in the month of November than in the past. This year’s event will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., and will feature two local women, Manheim Township High School graduate Abby Stewart and her mother, Carol Reichler. The luncheon is open only to women. Stewart and Reichler’s message is titled “The Power of Individuality and Unconditional Love.” The program will focus on the struggles Stewart encountered as a teenager and how she and her mother persevered together. The Silent Samaritan Fund has given more than $1 million to aid area women. According to Gerald Ressler, Samaritan Counseling Center executive director, “The
Carol Reichler (left) and her daughter, Abby Stewart (right), will be the speakers at this year’s Silent Samaritan Luncheon, which will be held at Calvary Church on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m. impact of the Silent Samaritans, in offering financial assistance, has been enormous.” The fund can be utilized in a variety of ways, including to provide counseling support for women who do not have insurance and to fund counseling center programs. Women wishing to attend the luncheon are asked to make a donation of a designated amount to the fund. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Readers who would like to attend may call 717560-9969. More information may be found at www.scclanc.org/ event/silent-samaritans.
