When shoppers enter Welcome Home Thrift & More, located in the IronSpire Complex at 2800 N. Reading Road, Suite 430, Adamstown, they certainly notice the carefully created furniture displays directly ahead. However, if they gaze to the left, they will notice an area that is not filled with gently used merchandise. Instead, they will encounter an opportunity, through the Welcome Home Initiative, to help folks who are working to meet needs and thrive right here in Lancaster and Berks.

According to Alisha, who runs the “thrift-tique” with her husband, Don, the Welcome Home Initiative program has grown out of local missions and other organizations working together to benefit the community. “Welcome Home Thrift & More has always been a resource for local organizations that need items for clients,” said Alisha. “If Good Samaritan in Ephrata needed something, they would call and ask,” noted Alisha, who has been asked to pick out children’s clothing and interview outfits. “That’s hard (to pick out someone else’s outfit), because for a job interview, you want to

Potter’s House staff embraces future
BY ANN MEAD ASH
The leadership team of The Potter’s House is looking forward to the future. Many of the staff members are new this year, but director of discipleship Rob Weatherholtz has been involved with the organization since 2005, and in 2013, founder Lloyd Hoover asked Weatherholtz to join the organization’s board.
“It was an undertaking to bring this to fruition,” said Weatherholtz of the growth of the organization, which now
Second Veterans Expo planned
BY ANN MEAD ASH
This is the second year that the Ephrata Lions Club has organized a Veterans Expo on Veterans Day weekend. For 2024, the club has partnered with the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Lancaster - Santa Marie Assembly 915 to provide dinners for attendees. “That’s a complimentary plated meal for veterans,” said Lions Club representative Steve Montpetit, who is helping to plan the event.
As with last year’s expo, more
than 20 veteran artisans and veteran-owned businesses will be present along with a number of nonprofit organizations that support veterans. The Ephrata Lions Club Veterans Expo will be held in the ballroom at the American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Lions have lined up a variety of vendors to set up displays at the event. “We will have woodworking and a couple of jewelry (makers),” said Montpetit, who added that a coffee company

includes the Still Waters Recovery Center and The Potter’s House of Ruth. “Now that we are there, I believe we have started something that will impact people long after I am gone.”
New leadership at The Potter’s House this year includes Robert Schoonover, executive director; Jeannette Scott, director of the House of Ruth; Janelle Horst, assistant director at the House of Ruth; and Steve Steel, director of students for The Potter’s House men’s ministry.
Until a year ago, Schoonover was running a successful business, but he was looking for something more. “It wasn’t fulfilling,” noted Schoonover, who sold the business and saw God begin to open doors at the ministry where he had been volunteering since 2005. “My heart was always for people in addiction and coming out of prison,” recalled Schoonover. “I learned what Potter’s House did, and I had a lot
of respect for it.” After mentoring students, teaching classes, and helping students obtain jobs, Schoonover was ready to do more. He was approached by Hoover about the director’s position and began a lengthy interview process, which culminated in his being offered the job in early July.
Schoonover said his credentials include his heart for the Lord and an aptitude for running a business.
“For such a time as this, here I am,” he stated, adding, “I look forward to facilitating a structure that will perpetuate this in the future and set us up for success and sustain the ministry as a whole and expand it.”
Schoonover pointed out that The Potter’s House focuses on producing a quality, mature individual. “I think the mechanisms that get us there are the faith-based approach, the power of God, and the healing that focuses on the trauma and the real issues beneath the addiction,” he said.
Scott comes to The Potter’s House with a strong background in nonprofit work, including ministry at places such as Water Street Mission. She has experience in executive leadership and business, and she recently served on staff at Lighthouse Assembly of God in New Holland. “God was leading me to move to something full time,” recalled Scott. “I had been praying for a long time, ‘Lord, how do you want to use the things you have developed in me?’” At the beginning of July, she heard about the opening at The House of Ruth and decided to apply. “This ministry is hard work, but it’s so rewarding,” said Scott. “There is such good fruit in transformed lives.” The House of Ruth opened about four years ago, and Scott looks forward to seeing growth in the program. “I feel honored and blessed to be a part of this,” she said. “I believe God wants to do something special here (by)
changing women’s lives.”
Horst became the part-time assistant director at The House of Ruth in early July after she and her family spent many years as missionaries to children in Honduras in association with Eastern Mennonite Missions. “We walked alongside a lot of young adults who came out of abuse,” recalled Horst, who is in her final year of a training program called STEP. Because Horst was only willing to work part-time, she did not think the position with The House of Ruth would be right for her, but she put the decision in God’s hands. “I trust the Spirit of God within me, and I know He’s leading me,” said Horst, who mentors several women outside her job. “I love walking with people,” said Horst. “God has equipped me to pastor people, walk with them, and shepherd them.” Steel first became involved with The Potter’s House program in

late 2021. Afterward, he worked for a local manufacturer, while studying to reach educational goals, which included earning his recovery specialist and criminal justice certifications from the state. He then went to work full time for a Lancaster County rehabilitation organization while also working as a part-time house manager for The Potter’s House. In October of 2023, he was offered a position assisting the director of the men’s program at The Potter’s House. In July, he became director of students. Steel holds a bachelor’s degree in bib -
lical studies from Lancaster Bible College, and he plans to start seminary in the spring of 2025. “I love serving God, and I love ministry,” said Steel. “However God sees fit to use me, I am willing.” Weatherholtz once owned a roofing business, but for several years now, he has been involved in The Potter’s House, where he was instrumental in building the Still Waters Recovery Center; acted as on-site spiritual parent, along with his wife; and served as assistant program director until 2021, when he became director of discipleship.

“It’s not about the titles; it’s about the passion,” shared Weatherholtz, the author of “A Raptured Heart” and “The Believer’s Warfare.” “I want to see people set free by knowing Jesus Christ,” he added. Weatherholtz recently received his associate addictions counselor certification. He serves as a pastor at Breakout Ministries and as a volunteer chaplain at Lancaster County Prison. Weatherholtz is excited to see that “trauma-healing ministry has been incorporated into the DNA of the ministry.” “I realized we were putting a bandage on something that needed spiritual surgery,” he said. “If you don’t cultivate the mind and the heart of the individual by getting all the rocks and weeds out, it’s not going to bear good fruit.”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

“We have a lot of veteran organizations,” stated Montpetit, who noted that the Lebanon Veterans Association will have a display for the first time this year, along with the returning Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans, a group that makes quilts and blankets for veterans, and Triggered 22, an entity that promotes awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder with a goal of preventing suicide.
“We are excited about the meal,” noted Montpetit. “It’s a full plated meal with dessert, coffee, and tea.” Montpetit stated that the meal is free for veterans in the Ephrata Legion Dining Room from noon to 2 p.m. Other attendees may purchase meals at a set price. Individuals who wish to have a free or purchased meal are required to register by calling Bill Childs at 717-413-4562 by Friday, Nov. 1. A book launch for “The Wizard of Roz” will take place at Nooks, 112 N. Prince St., on First Friday, Nov. 1. The book was inspired by the Katelyn and Derek Martin family of New Holland, which also includes 9-year-old Roslynn and her brother, Greyson. During the event, Roz (Roslynn) will read from the book from 4:30 to 5 p.m., and a book signing will follow from 5 to 8 p.m.

Also present to sign books will be Mike Axe, who brought together the Martin family, Emmy Award winner and author Barbara Schwartz, and illustrator Jose Ramos to create the book. Axe is a Lancaster native who now resides in Burbank, Calif.
“The Wizard of Roz” invites readers into the world of Roz, a young girl, and her nonverbal autistic brother, Greyson. Written for children ages 4 through 8, as well as families and educators, the book aims to capture the joys and challenges of living in a neurodiverse household. The book follows Roz as she narrates a movie night with her family when they watch “The Wizard of Oz” together. Through Roz’s eyes, readers are taken on a journey that mirrors the iconic film’s themes of courage, friendship, and the search for a place where everyone belongs. As the movie unfolds, Roz shares the story in her own way, making sure Greyson is comfortable when he gets overwhelmed and reminding readers that everyone’s experience of the world is unique.
“The Wizard of Roz” seeks to delicately address the sensory challenges and social differences that many children on the autism spectrum experience, like Greyson’s need for breaks during the movie or his meltdowns in crowded places. It also highlights the special moments that bring the family closer - like when the family dog, Duke, instinctively knows how to comfort Greyson and the way Roz dreams of one day caring for Greyson in a big farmhouse.
Axe hopes to sell 100,000 copies to help continue his mission to create more stories that celebrate neurodiversity, including future books from the perspectives of other family members, including Duke the dog. Axe also hopes to offer school outreach programs and fund workshops for educators and parents.
He hopes to translate “The Wizard of Roz” into multiple languages to reach a global audience and possibly create an animated series based on the book. Axe and Schwartz both have a background in animation.
To order a copy of the book, visit www.wizardofrozbook.com. The creators are also seeking partnerships and sponsorships to help continue sharing the story.

put your best foot forward,” said Alisha, who felt those preparing for that important event should have the opportunity to choose their own clothing. “So we created this concept,” noted Alisha, explaining that the Welcome Home Initiative gives people the opportunity to purchase gift cards to be given to those in need. “(The gift card) goes directly to the individual they’re working with, so (that client) can come in and can pick out the things they want.”
Local organizations responded positively to the idea. “Those organizations we partnered with were raving about it,” recalled Alisha of the program that kicked off in January of 2023. “We don’t counsel. We don’t find homes for people. We don’t have financial classes,” said Alisha, noting that choosing donated items that are appropriate for the store and preparing them for sale is Welcome Home’s specialty. “We have amazing donors and volunteers,” she noted.
Among the organizations Welcome Home has connected with are Align Life Ministries; Managing Motherhood in Lititz; REAL Life Community Services in Denver; and Ephrata Area Social Services, which recently joined with Cocalico Builders of Hope and Ephrata Builders of Hope. Alisha said she appreciates
that the organizations are working “together as a community to help the people who are financially struggling.” She noted that area churches that were giving gift cards from department stores are now purchasing them from Welcome Home because it multiplies the benefits offered to those at home and abroad.
For individuals who want to contribute in other ways, Welcome Home keeps a “Change for Change” jar on the register counter. “People can give their change (from their purchase),” explained Alisha, who noted that all the change in the jar is added up to purchase gift cards for individuals in need. Alisha said it has been rewarding to meet those who have been helped by the program. “We had a lady recently with her two kids,” she recalled. “I said I remembered her from the shelter and told her, ‘This is awesome you’re buying housewares.’” The woman responded that she now had her own job and her own place. “(I was) able to say, ‘I recognize you’ and encourage her,” pointed out Alisha.
“We want to give a hand up, not just a handout,” summed up Alisha. “It’s been nice to come alongside these organizations, and then the community comes alongside us when they buy these gift cards to help us continue doing what we do.”
Volunteers are sought to sort donations and work in the shop on a regular basis. Applications may be picked up at the store. More information may be found at http://welcomehomethrift.com.
