Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts, is looking forward to the organization’s first Day of ThanksGIVING, which will feature a live evening gathering. “The evening is a celebration of all God has done,” said Dienner. “We are so thankful for our donors.”

The Day of ThanksGIVING will begin at midnight on Friday, Nov. 18, with online giving at https://cavod.org. The academy at 675 W. Main St., New Holland, which is normally closed on Fridays, will open at 9 a.m. for those who want to give in person.

An Evening of Celebration will be held at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, from 6 to 11 p.m. Giving stations will be located in the theater.

Dienner pointed out that the fundraiser will also benefit students of the Manheim location at 280 S. Oak St., which opened in 2021. “This is a combination of both campuses coming together at the main base,” said Dienner.

The evening event will include a dance party with a live DJ, dance and music performances by Cavod students, worship, and free food in the form of pizza, popcorn, cookies, and beverages. Door prize tickets to win tickets to Cavod Theatre and Cavod merchandise, such as hats, T-shirts, and sweatshirts, will be given out, and a drawing will be held each hour.

Cavod Academy offers a variety of classes in dance, voice, and more, with an emphasis on “creating with purpose.” An essential goal of the organization is to offer students a godly environment that inspires excellence in the arts while building community and impacting lives.

Dienner said that fundraisers like the Day of ThanksGIVING benefit children and adults in the New

Holland and Manheim areas who want to take lessons in the environment Cavod offers. “Many families have come to (Cavod) as a place that is safe with a godly influence that sets us apart,” said Dienner. She added that she has seen students grow and gain motivation and even seen lives changed because of the high value Cavod places on each individual’s talents.

“This will be one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” commented Dienner, who noted that the organization raises about 30% of its yearly budget. “We will have matching funds, so your gift will be stretched. No amount is too small.”

Jesse Bills, who has been the pastor of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church for more than a year now, said the church has a busy fall planned. “We’ve got a lot going on,” he noted.

The extra activity involves the church’s 145th anniversary. Bills said planning started in earnest in August. “We saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the past and get excited about the future too,” he said.

In early 1976, Steve Loewen was looking forward to graduating high school. He had already paid for his first year of college at Penn State University, where he planned to study engineering. However, in March of that year, an auto accident claimed the life of his mother, Louise, and left Steve paralyzed with only limited use of his arms.

In 1976, Penn State was not equipped to accommodate a student in a motorized wheelchair.

Observance of the anniversary will kick off with a community worship service on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. E.C. denominational leader Randy Sizemore will travel from the church’s home offices in Myerstown to preach that day. His sermon, titled “Returning to Jerusalem,” will focus on Acts 1:1-12. In addition to Pequea E.C. Church members, worshipers from nearby Mount Airy E.C. Church and Pequea Presbyterian Church will visit for a corporate worship service followed by a fellowship meal.

On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m., a birthday bash will be held. Mike Sigman, pastor of Grace Community Church in Willow Street, where Bills serves as pastor of discipleship, will bring a short and

encouraging message on the subject of partnership, and juggler Chris Ivey will entertain.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m., an old-fashioned hymn sing will be held. The special guest speaker will be Jeff Byerly, who grew up in nearby Cambridge. Bills explained that Byerly just retired from serving for more than 20 years at Bethesda E.C. Church in Schuylkill Haven. “He is a son of this congregation,” said Bills, pointing out that Byerly came to faith at Pequea and was called to ministry from the church.

Bills noted that the Mount Airy congregation represents more than just a neighboring church. “Mount Airy is our mother church,” he explained, noting that, prior to the founding of Pequea E.C. in the fall of 1877, a small group

from Mount Airy began holding a Sunday school in an old schoolhouse in the area. “Eventually they started this church,” said Bills.

Bills wants residents from the surrounding area to know that those who have been part of the church history are welcome to take part in the celebra-

tions. “We are inviting retired pastors and anyone that has connections from the past to come out and join us,” he said.

Regular Pequea E.C. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. in person or by livestream at www.pcchurch.online or by searching for “Pequea Church of White Horse” on Facebook.

“They didn’t even have curb cuts,” pointed out Steve. With college out of the picture, Steve seized on the popularity of citizen’s band radio, in which he had an interest. He purchased an operating Radio Shack store at 101 S. Railroad Ave., New Holland, in October of 1977. The store moved to 125 W. Main St. in 1979 and later to 375 W. Main St. By the late 1980s, Steve was tired of renting store space and purchased the house at 331 E. Main St. In the mid-1990s, he added the building in the back, which now serves as the store. Steve is currently celebrating the store’s 45th anniversary.

Over the years, Steve has experienced the excitement associated with a number of firsts in the world of electronics. In 1978, he had one of the first TRS-80 Model 1 computers. “It had 4K of memory, and you saved information on a cassette tape,” said Steve.

Beginning in 2005, the switch from analog to digital television required a converter box. The government provided coupons, and Steve did the paperwork to handle them, helping 1,400 customers to make the change.

When SiriusXM radio signed a well-known shock jock in 2006, Radio Shack was involved and Steve’s store was the area outlet. Steve sold and activated hundreds of the units. “Sirius was huge,” recalled Steve. In 2015, Lancaster County Communications made the move to digital for first responders.

“Everybody had to get new radios and scanners,” said Steve, who was able to help local fire company members, families, and friends with the upgrade, which improved safety for all. “I have been blessed to have a front-row seat to the evolution and explosion in technology starting in 1980,” Steve said.

When Radio Shack filed for

bankruptcy and closed 7,000 stores in 2015, Steve’s store became one of only a few in the state that remained open. Radio Shack still provides the store with limited products, along with a multitude of other suppliers. “We have the most inventory we’ve had in 15 years, and we’ve branched into amateur radio,” said Steve. “We (also) fix Apple screens,” he added.

“None of this would have been possible without hundreds of people who have come in and out of my life at the right times,” said Steve, who added he believes God is responsible. For the last six years, Ralph Hess has served as his caregiver and general manager assisting Steve at the store, while also devoting time to the local community.

More information may be found by searching for “New Holland Radio Shack” on Facebook.

GS Football Team Dominates E-town, 66-21

With the regular season winding down, the Garden Spot football team took care of business with a dominant 66-21 defeat of Elizabethtown on the road Friday night October 21. The victory over their Section Three rival improved the Spartans’ record to 4-1 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (7-2 overall) with a regular-season finale scheduled against unbeaten Solanco.

After surviving a wild second quarter in which the two opponents scored three touchdowns each, the Spartans led 42-21 at the half. The Spartans’ 21

points in the second stanza included a 67-yard interception return by Blake Weaver.

“We executed consistently on all fronts Friday night,” Garden Spot head coach Matt Zamperini stated. “We played with confidence in ourselves and in each other.”

Jadon Burkholder’s 70-yard dash to the endzone opened the scoring. Kye Harting, who passed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 133 yards on 15 carries. Harting threw touchdown passes to Burkholder and Zac Nagle while also running for three TD’s of his own.

Josh Rudy completed 18of-36 pass attempts for 176 yards and one touchdown.

The Spartans defense had two interceptions, including Weaver’s pick-six.

In Section Three scoring, the Spartans have the highest points total (339) and the fewest allowed (156) through the nine games.

“We have five sophomores starting on defense,” Zamperini pointed out, referring to Cullen Witmer, Alex Horst, Maxwell Davis, Cole Humphreys and Trent Hoober

“While a few names stood out in the statistical categories, everyone on the field contributed - Diego Portales on special teams, for instance,” added the coach. “It is incredible to take part in a game like this with a group of young men so committed to a singular mission.”

VOLLEYBALL

The Garden Spot girls’ volleyball team, ranked number 15 in the District Three Class 3A playoff seedings, visited second-ranked Twin Valley on Tuesday, October 25, for an opening-round district playoff match.

The Raiders (14-3) ended the Spartans’ season at 8-9 by posting a 3-0 sweep. The Raiders won by scores of 2513, 25-10 and 25-8 to advance to the district quarterfinals.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team suffered a tough 4-1 loss at Ephrata on Wednesday night, October 26. In the opening round of the District Three 2A

playoffs, the Spartans came up short against L-L League opponent Ephrata, ending their strong 2022 campaign at 14-4. The Mountaineers (125-1) advanced to the quarterfinals.

Karis Minninger scored for the Spartans, capitalizing on an assist from Lauren Horning in the fourth quarter.

The Mounts kept the Spartans from mounting a comeback as Marie McCracken scored twice in the fourth. Alise Althouse also scored in the fourth quarter, which meant that the game went into the final stanza with Ephrata holding only a 1-0 lead.

Project Receives Wildlife Grant

The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), with the recommendation and support of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, applied for and was awarded a Huplits Wildlife Grant of $9,800. The grant will focus on a wildlife habitat revitalization project at MCC’s 9-acre campus in Akron.

In tandem with the eradication of invasive species, the project will provide educational opportunities for local schools, community groups, and other organizations, as well as research projects for young adults that concentrate on the restoration of woodland. Currently, MCC, whose campus is strategically landscaped to promote biodiversity, offers children and community groups hands-on education that promotes

healthy forests, native plants, wildlife, solar energy, and water conservation.

The grants are subsidized by the private Myrtle Huplits and Woodman Huplits Foundation of Yardley, which was founded in 1991 and most recently had more than $1.8 million in revenue. Sierra Club entities, as wellas non-Sierra Club organizations in Pennsylvania that share similar goals with Sierra Club groups and/or the Sierra Club - Pennsylvania Chapter, can participate in the competition.

For more information about MCC’s project, email katrinalefever@mcc.org. Complete details regarding the grants competition can be found by visiting www.sierra club.org and searching for Huplits Wildlife Grant at the bottom of the home page.

The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy fundraising campaign and event raised $543,875. The funds raised will help grant wishes for children in the Susquehanna Valley who are fighting critical illnesses.

The Mother’s Day Truck Convoy initiative comprises a nine-month fundraising campaign; a 26-mile truck convoy through Manheim, Mount Joy, and several nearby communities; and a family carnival. The truck convoy event and carnival take place on Mother’s Day each year at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, and they raise funds to support nearly 75% of wishes granted in the Susquehanna Valley.

A large part of fundraising efforts for the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy comes from truck drivers who raise

money for Make-A-Wish for months leading up to the truck convoy event. Each year, the drivers who raise the most money earn a spot in the top 30 and the opportunity to lead the truck convoy the following year. Collectively, the efforts of the top 30 drivers raised over $300,000 for Make-A-Wish.

The top fundraiser and driver this year was Michael Kindt. He raised $50,025 and will have the privilege of leading the convoy pulling the wish angel trailer honoring Make-A-Wish kids who have died.

The 2023 Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy and Carnival will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. Drivers and fundraising teams are encouraged to register and raise funds for Make-A-Wish by visiting www.wishconvoy.org. For information on Truck Convoy partnership opportunities, contact Lori Dietrich at 717-283-4868 or ldietrich@philadesv.wish.org.

Veterans Day Program Set

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC), 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, will host its 40th annual Veterans Day program on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m., rain or shine. The program will be held in the parking lot above the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial while the memorial undergoes renovations.

John Spruyt, director of IGNC, will welcome the audience. Nicholas Taylor, commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address. Joseph

Snyder, Memorial Council trustee, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania.

Parking will be at the Arrowhead Community Club, 9-65 Fisher Ave., on Fort Indiantown Gap with shuttle bus transportation to and from the designated parking area to the cemetery. Anyone entering the area from the west is advised that there is construction on Fisher

Avenue at Bittle Road. Attendees should follow the detour sign pointing north at Snitz Creek Restaurant, which will bring them to the Community Club. There will be limited handicapped-accessible parking at the cemetery itself.

The Avenue of Flags display at the cemetery will be in place through the week of Veterans Day. The Avenue of Flags is made up of casket flags that have been donated by veterans’ families. State, territory, and service flags will also be flown.
