At Garden Spot High School (GSHS), teacher Lei Williams teaches English as a second language. Williams was born in Vietnam, and she has relatives there. In 2015, Williams first organized for a group of GSHS students to visit Vietnam. In the summer of 2019, she led a second group of students to the country. In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. The organization’s educational committee visits nearly 20 middle and high schools a year, giving as many as 30 living history presentations. “Sometimes we have lunch, and teachers join us,” said Douglas Kelly, president of the chapter. During lunch in May, Williams talked to the veterans and asked if anyone in the group would like to return to Vietnam. Later on, she

contacted Kelly, and fundraising efforts to make the trip possible began. Williams has arranged for a group of 21, including 17 veterans and some spouses, to visit Vietnam from Friday, March 27, to Thursday, April 9, 2020. The group will raise funds for the trip at the seventh annual Martic MOST (Military Outreach Support Team) tribute to veterans on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Marticville Middle School, 356 Frogtown Road, Pequea. The free event will feature a refurbished Huey 823 helicopter, the Wall of Fallen Heroes of the Mid-Atlantic States exhibit, and displays by organizations such as the Quarryville VFW, Wreaths Across America, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and others. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and the program will begin in the auditorium at 9:30 a.m. The group will also hold a Dine to See Veterans pg 7

Preparing to return to Vietnam in 2020 are (front, from left) Army veteran Rich Mellott, Garden Spot High School teacher Lei Williams, (back) Marine Corps veteran Charlie Miller, and Navy veterans Doug Kelly and Ron Horn. A group of 21 will journey to Vietnam from March 27 to April 9.

of their special Christmas (traditions).” The annual CrossNet Christmas Gift Program brings members from all sectors of the community together to serve more than 500 area ELANCO School District children who receive free lunches. To do this, CrossNet offers area residents the opportunity to take part in one or more of three giving programs. First, participants may choose to sponsor a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. Kerstetter stated that local organizations often sponsor a family. “We have quite a few churches, small groups, and businesses that come together to do that,” explained Kerstetter. Individuals and groups that would like to sponsor a family should contact CrossNet at 717355-2454 by Friday, Nov. 15, so Kerstetter can match donors with families. “We can take donors later than that, though, if we have families (in need),” she added. The second option is to bring a toy to a local donor bin. Kerstetter has about 15 toy collection bins that can be placed in churches, businesses, or other areas of the community. Organizations that would like a bin to fill may contact CrossNet. Toys that may be placed in bins include miniature cars, skateboards, sports equipment, children’s books, purses and bags, action figure toys, Legos, board games, educational baby toys, craft sets, and stocking stuffer items. Kerstetter noted that bins can be found at Flower and Home Marketplace, SquireSide Cafe, JB Zimmerman,

and Buehler Family Dental. Items should be placed in bins by Friday, Dec. 6. A third way to take part in the program is to give to the stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, glow sticks, harmonicas, candy, chewing gum, earbuds, nail polish, lip balm, travel-size personal items, hairbrushes and combs, hair accessories, sticky notes, stickers, small puzzles, silly straws, wallets, jewelry sets, and beef jerky. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to the CrossNet Youth Center at 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Dec. 6, and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Dec. 9, 10, and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. On Saturday, Dec. 14, sponsored families will come to CrossNet to pick up their gifts. “That day is special because it truly focuses on empowering the families,” said Kerstetter. “It’s nice that they can come without their children and they feel like they went out shopping for the gifts.” Kerstetter added that parents may choose stocking stuffers for their children and then wrap the presents. “They are part of the giving process,” she said. Kerstetter said that adult volunteers are needed to help sort incoming gifts during the week prior to the event. “We need extra volunteers from Monday, Dec. 9, through Thursday, Dec. 12,” she said. Volunteers will also be needed on Dec. 14. Readers who wish to volunteer may call the CrossNet office or email lisa@elancocross.org. At age 29, after four successful years with the Baltimore Ravens and three with the St. Louis Rams, center Jason Brown walked away from football and into an entirely unrelated career. Some people, when they retire, become “gentleman farmers,” with a few acres and a handful of cattle that they can manage with low stress and minimal effort. Jason and his wife, Tay, had a much bigger dream, and they bought a 1,000acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. The one problem? Neither Jason nor Tay had experience farming. Just as he did with football skills, Jason turned to YouTube to learn what he needed to run a farm. “I grew up with a little bit of a green thumb, did a little bit of landscaping with my father, as far as planting shrubs and See Ag Event pg 11

MHALC from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

“We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the

things that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said McDevitt. MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues, loneliness is often a problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding that patients may have lost supporting relationships during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that

social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area residents struggling with mental illness issues and their families in three main areas - advocacy, support, and education. Advocacy services include suicide prevention programs, including a gunlock program and suicide prevention training, See MHALC pg 5

Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHALC, provides Individual Education Program (IEP) advocacy and educates students on depression during mental health talks. Support programs include Compeer Lancaster, Community Support Programs, and other support groups, which Leckow noted provide socialization as well as help with specific problems. “Support groups are an alternative or supplement to counseling, where (patients) can talk to peers who are in the same situation,” said Leckow. Education services provided by MHALC include a wellness academy that features a variety of speakers, school-based training, and a partnership with Lancaster County Prison that helps connect inmates to support in prison and after they are released. MHALC strives to stop the progression of mental illness in individuals within the county. “We try to prevent people from coming to a desperate hopeless place,” said Leckow. “We are working for every counselor and service provider out there (to help connect patients with long-term support).” Readers who would like to learn

Hertzler noted that the staging the play had some special challenges. “This story has a few aspects about it that make it challenging for the stage,” she stated. “A few examples are the need for actresses to have specific hair colors, a boat that has to ‘float’ on and off stage, and the ability to be in various locations depending on the scene while keeping the Green Gables set the central focus of the show.” The cast includes 13 CCS students ranging from grades seven to 12, and they will be assisted by a student team of stage and tech crew members. Parent volunteers, school staff members, and outside volunteers have collaborated with students in set design and painting, staging, lighting, sound, costumes, and hair and makeup. Hertzler, who has been directing shows at CCS since 2014, noted that the performances of the play are open to the public, not just CCS students and their families. “It is a family-friendly show, and we would love for the community to come out,” she said. The doors will open 30 minutes before curtain times. Each performance will have a 15-minute intermission when concessions will be open with snacks and beverages available for purchase. Reserved seating and general admission tickets can be purchased at www.conestogachristian.net/anne-ofgreen-gables. General admission tickets will also be sold the night of the shows. Tickets will be discounted for CCS students and seniors age 60 and over. For additional information, readers may call the school at 610-286-0353 or visit the website.

Students at Conestoga Christian School (CCS), 2760 Main St., Morgantown, will perform “Anne of Green Gables” as their fall drama on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. Based on the book by L.M. Montgomery, Peter DeLaurier’s dramatized version of “Anne of Green Gables” is set in the fictional village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island in Canada. The story centers on a farm called Green Gables, which is managed by an aging brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Matthew and Marilla decide to adopt an orphan boy from Nova Scotia to help them on the farm. However, due to a mixup, the orphanage mistakenly sends 11year-old Anne Shirley instead of a boy. Anne, wearing her distinctive straw hat, is a talkative, energetic, red-haired orphan with a vivid imagination, who frequently gets into trouble, but is able to bring life into Green Gables. Over the next few years, Anne grows and matures, and she eventually comes to find love, acceptance, and belonging in her new home. The book has been adapted into film and it was made into a television miniseries in 1985. “I grew up watching the 1985 version of ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and reading the books, so the story of Anne has always been close to my heart,” said CCS middle school language arts teacher Janna Hertzler, who is directing the play. “Last summer, I had the privilege of visiting Prince Edward Island, and the unique beauty of the island made me appreciate the story even more. I chose Peter DeLaurier’s drama because it was the version that I felt was closest to the novel and that captured the hearts of the characters best.” She noted that some CCS students were familiar with the story, but most were not. “Some students had seen the film, but for many of the lead actors, this was their first experience with the story,” Hertzler shared. “It was refreshing to see them approach the story with no previous knowledge and to get to know their characters firsthand, not through a separate interpretation.”

Every Thursday 6-9 6 PM - Fellowship & Food - 7PM Meeting Held at Petra Church 565 Airport Rd New Holland Student Life Center – East Entrance

With the findings singaling that many Americans may not be defending themselves against diabetesrelated vision loss. Donate Fundraising Night at Texas Roadhouse, 2317 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 3 to 10 p.m. A percentage of the sales from that evening will go to Chapter 1008. Ron Horn, who served in the Navy in Vietnam, became curious about young people in Vietnam who have been affected by Agent Orange when he heard Garden Spot students talk about their trip. Horn, who lost a lung because of his exposure to Agent Orange, which he explained can be passed to one’s children, has three grown children. He explained that more than a dozen ailments have been linked to Agent Orange exposure in the second generation. Rich Mellott, who served in the Army, would like to see people he knows in Vietnam and visit the places he was stationed. “I want to see Hill 55,” he stated. When Mellott was there two years ago, he went to Tuy Hòa, near where his base camp was located. “That hadn’t changed,” he stated. “But Quy Nhon was a fishing village, and now they have high-rise motels and a 16foot-wide boardwalk.” Charlie Miller, who served as a Marine, struggled with articulating his reasons for going. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “I have a history.” Miller noted that he was badly wounded in Vietnam, but he also lost a brother to the war. “I always wanted to go back, (but) I can’t really explain it,” he said. “It will be tough, but I just want to go over.” Williams said that the group has also contacted area businesses seeking support. Readers who would like to know more may visit www.vva-avva1008.org or contact Kelly at 717-394-2448 or PresidentVVA1008@gmail.com.

The Adamstown Area Library has announced that Restaurant Week will continue through Friday, Nov. 8. It began on Nov. 4. Participating restaurants will donate a percentage of sales to the library’s Room to Grow Capital Campaign, which will help to pay the costs of the library’s new building. SWAN from pg 1 trauma suffered by the children of the incarcerated offenders he was working with. “My husband was doing a lot of pastoring with criminal offenders, and I was starting to see the families up close and seeing how devastating parental incarceration was for children,” said Diana, who asked herself what she could do to help. “I thought music would be a great way to help them, and that’s what I had to give. I saw (music) was healing for them, (and helped them) to realize they weren’t the only ones (struggling with this issue).” The result was SWAN, a one-hour after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which meets at the Wharton Business School in Lancaster. “We give the children 120 hours of instruction during camp,” said Diana, who noted that once the SDoL recognized the need for the program, SWAN was welcomed into the schools. “The district is becoming more trauma informed and trauma aware,” said Diana, who added that recent state laws will require teachers to become more trauma informed. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Each Tuesday at 3 p.m., Lauren Reyes, a SWAN music educator, meets with about 10 students at Wickersham Elementary. Her hour with the group includes singing and working with instruments such as hand drums, drumline instruments, guitars, and ukuleles. “What

Lauren is bringing this year is a program that uses melody and percussion along with singing,” said Diana. Reyes said that she wants to promote improvisation and collaboration to encourage students to create. “I try to get a good community working together,” she said, noting that the approach she uses is multicultural. Anny, a fifth-grade Wickersham student who attends, said that she enjoys SWAN because she is with others who

enjoy the same things she does. She also appreciates how participating in the musical program affects her outlook. “I like that music can change your mood,” she said. “If someone is sad, music can brighten up their day.” Willow, who is in first grade, called SWAN “a magical place.” “I have always liked music, and I like to be in programs,” said Willow, who listed a number of instruments she has had a chance to play through SWAN. The Spartans held off the sixth seed as well as the number 14 seed in the District Three Class-AAA girls’ volleyball playoffs and reached the semifinals. Both were 3-0 victories as Garden Spot sneaked by Wyomissing 26-24, 25-23 and

25-14 at home on Saturday, October 26 and handled James Buchanan two days later at West York High School. The Spartans topped the Rockets 25-18, 25-18 and 25-12 and improved to 17-2 in the process. It was all part of the path to the district semifinals match. That’s where Garden Spot earned a spot in

the title match with an intense 3-2 defeat of West York at Hempfield on Halloween night with neither team getting scared of a momentum shift. It was a seesaw battle between the Bulldogs and Spartans with Garden Spot winning the first set 25-23 and the Bulldogs returning the favor by the same exact score to tie the match at 1-1. Garden grabbed the edge with a 25-22 victory only to see the Bulldogs bite off a big win in the fourth, 25-23. The Spartans held on for a 15-12

tiebreaker win. Berks Catholic and top-seeded Palmyra played in the nightcap of the doubleheader at Hempfield. Elyse Mundorff and Logan Martin each drilled 11 kills in the victory over Wyomissing. Halie Butler served up three aces and Allie King finished with nine digs. Abigail O’Neill assisted the offensive effort with 37 assists. In the Buchanan match, Mundorff drilled eight kills and Logan Martin notched four blocks while Kelly Martin

led the way in digs with 17. Butler came through with four aces and O’Neill again led the team in assists, this time finishing with 29. FOOTBALL Garden Spot and Cedar Crest went into the second quarter of Friday night’s non-league football game tied 7-7. In the regular-season finale on October 25, the Spartans held the Falcons close until the third quarter when Crest put another 14 points on the board on two Tyler Cruz rushing touchdowns to increase the lead to 35-7 en route to a 42-14 victory. Crest finished the regular season with a 7-3 record while Garden Spot fell to 0-10. The Spartans had a 7-0 lead in this home game as Jesse Martin hit

halfback John Dykie with a 21-yard scoring pass, followed promptly by a Walker Martin PAT kick. Cruz, who gained 188 yards of real estate on 23 carries, scored two Crest touchdowns and quarterback Chris Danz (7-for-13, 138 yards) threw the only touchdown pass of the game before halftime. In the fourth quarter, Charles Martin scored another six points for the Spartans - a short-yardage rushing TD. Spartan quarterback Jesse Martin completed 12 of 17 attempts for 152 yards and the touchdown to Dykie, who also ran for 56 yards on 11 carries. Ethan Good grabbed four of Martin’s completions for 68 yards. Joel Martin had three catches for 59 yards.

trees and flowers here and there, but doing it on a large scale? No, this was totally brand new to me,” Jason explained in an episode of “Growing a Greener World” that was reposted at https://wisdomforlife.org/firstfruitsfarm. The Browns named their new property First Fruits Farm and pledged to give the best of each harvest to people in need in the community. In 2014, its first year of operation, the farm produced more than 120,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and more than 10,000 pounds of cucumbers. Since then, the farm has produced nearly 1 million pounds of food, and all of it has been donated to food pantries and churches. “We know we are giving our best. We are giving from the heart, and that’s what it’s all about,” Jason said. “In my football career, I was living a life of entertaining. Now, it’s a life of service.” Jason will share his story at the Lancaster Chamber’s annual agriculture industry banquet, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. “He definitely has a message that aligns with what the Chamber wants: giving back to the community,” said Lancaster Chamber senior business programming manager Sandi Thompson. “He took a big risk … but he felt it was his calling. We want people to follow their dreams.” The banquet will open with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. While Jason will be the guest speaker, a short program will include the recognition of this year’s century farm and the recipient of the George C. Delp Award, which honors a person or business that makes a significant contribution to the agriculture community and demonstrates an outstanding commitment to preserving or enhancing agriculture. Additionally, Lancaster Chamber president Tom Baldrige will speak, and Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Cheryl Cook is slated to address the attendees. Thompson noted that while the Lancaster Chamber no longer has a dedicated agriculture services department in order to serve all industries, it has continued to host the banquet because it honors the foundation of Lancaster County. “Celebrating agriculture is a big part of our community,” Thompson said. “We want to continue to recognize that ag is part of a large economic drive in the community.” People who want to be part of that celebration may purchase tickets to attend the banquet or sign up to be an event sponsor or table patron. Thompson requested that tickets be reserved by Friday, Nov. 8, but she will accommodate walk-ins at the event. Attire for the event will range from denim and flannel to suits and ties, and all will be welcome. As a nod to First Fruits Farm’s commitment to feeding the hungry, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable proteins, such as tuna or peanut butter, to the event. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will distribute the donations to local organizations. For more information about the event or to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.lancasterchamber.com and click on Signature Events under the Events & Programs tab. To become a sponsor or patron, individuals may contact Thompson at 717-239-6963 or sthompson@lancasterchamber.com.

Willow added that she likes to perform, even though she may be a little nervous to start. “After I perform, I feel happy and I am ready to enjoy the rest of my day and think about this wonderful memory,” she said. “It makes me feel confident and gives me courage.” Diana explained that performance is an important part of the program, noting that participants perform for family, friends, and community members in settings like schools, nursing homes, and First Friday events. One of SWAN’s first students is now helping to teach others. Bryanna Still, who is now a student at Dayspring Christian Academy, has dealt with a lot of trauma, but she has excelled musically. “She has made wonderful decisions,” said Diana, of Bryanna, who assisted at the SWAN summer camp and won accolades from the instructors. “We can help children with their behavior, physical, emotional, scholastic, and social issues if we understand what is going on in their lives,” said Diana. “Their present circumstances do not need to determine who they are or what they do.” Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

Tyler Gum, director of the Pennsylvania Military Museum and 28th Division Shrine in Boalsburg, will speak in the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata, on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. He will share about the role of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Division in the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne, which sapped the German Army of its will to continue World War I. Twenty-six years later, the 28th Division rushed to Belgium to defend against the initial brunt of the great German counteroffensive known as the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. These two military engagements are considered to be significant turning points in world history, and Pennsylvanians were there. This program is a joint offering of the Ephrata Public Library and the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley to commemorate the role of Pennsylvania’s veterans and their sacrifices and contributions to American history. The program is free and open to the public.
