Meadow View - A Team Approach To Normalcy BY ANN MEAD ASH
elody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000-squarefoot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community,” said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other.” Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients),” Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose.” A training room located off Town
M
Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. Pointing out the donated items in the general store, Karick noted, “Shopping is a normal part of life.” She added that donated items in the store may be chosen by residents at no charge. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim,” pointed out Karick. “Those doors are for team members.” A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. In a neighborhood including five resident apartments, each door is a different color and has a different number of panels and a different door handle. Each also has a mailbox with the resident’s name.”We are giving several cues to what is their household and room,” explained Karick. Resident comfort and safety were paramount in the plan for the building and the care of its occupants. “When a resident gets out of bed, sensors will automatically turn on the bathroom light,” said Karick, See Meadow View pg 13

same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/extra givecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want folks to really feel like they’re prime players in the day. It’s their excitement and enthusiasm that has made the ExtraGive as successful as it has been over the years in Lancaster County.” For more information about the ExtraGive, readers may contact Spangler at aspangler@ lancfound.org or 717-397-1629, ext. 113.

NOVEMBER SPECIALS
“Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/ downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the

He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought

early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

CrossNet - Christmas With A Difference BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, noted that this year’s Christmas Gift Program will not be the same. “It will be a drive-through pickup this year, she stated. However, she added that she and CrossNet food and nutrition manager Amy Marburger are able to make a special addition for 2020. “Each family will receive a Christmas meal including a ham, said Kerstetter. Organizers of the CrossNet Christmas Gift Program expect to serve more than 500 ELANCO School District children who regularly receive free lunches or who have been financially affected by COVID-19 restrictions. To provide the program, CrossNet offers area residents the opportunity to take part in one or more of three giving programs.
First, participants may choose to sponsor a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. Individuals and groups that would like to sponsor a family should contact CrossNet at 717-355-2454 by Thursday, Nov. 12, so Kerstetter can match donors with families. The second option is to bring a toy to a local donation bin. Kerstetter has 20 toy collection bins to be placed in churches, businesses, or other areas of the community. Organizations that would like a bin to fill may contact CrossNet. Toys that may be placed in bins include miniature cars, sports equipment, children’s books, action figure toys, Legos, board games, educational baby toys, craft sets, and stocking stuffer items. Kerstetter noted that bins can be found at Coffee Co on
East Main Street, Martin’s Auto Sales, Buehler Family Dental, Hostetter Realty, Bethany Grace Fellowship, Prosper Bank (formerly Coatesville Savings Bank), and Meridian Products. Items should be placed in bins by Wednesday, Dec. 9. A third way to take part in the program is to give to the stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, glow sticks, harmonicas, candy, chewing gum, earbuds, lip balm, travel-size personal items, hair accessories, sticky notes, stickers, small puzzles, wallets, jewelry sets, and beef jerky. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to the CrossNet Youth Center at 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, by Wednesday, Dec. 9. Donation hours will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Dec. 7, 8, and 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Holiday Craft Show Planned
On Saturday, Dec. 12, sponsored families will come to CrossNet to pick up their gifts. Kerstetter explained that families will drive up to the garage door to receive their meal and then move on to a second stop where they will receive gifts along with wrapping paper CrossNet volunteer Joan Benjamin and tape. Dona- helped sort gifts for the 2019 Christtions of wrap- mas Gift Program. ping paper and tape will be appreciated as some volunteers will be needed on Dec. 12. Readers who wish well. Adult volunteers are needed to to volunteer may call the help sort incoming gifts during CrossNet office or email lisa@ the week prior to the event, and elancocross.org.
New Life Fellowship, 420 E. Fulton St., Ephrata, will hold a Christmas craft show on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include more than 40 vendors, a poinsettia sale, baked goods, a chicken barbecue, PA Dairymen’s Farm Show milkshakes, a coffee cafe, other food and beverages, and a visit from Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot. Poinsettias must be ordered and paid for by Wednesday, Nov. 18, for pickup on Nov. 21 at the craft show. To receive a poinsettia sale order form, readers may contact Irene Zeiset at 717-341-1719 or randfam54@gmail.com. The use of masks and other CDC guidelines should be followed. Proceeds will benefit New Life Fellowship’s sanctuary renovations. For more details, readers may call the church at 717-738-0963.

Turkey Bowl To Run Live Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook will hold its annual 5K Turkey Bowl Race this Thanksgiving, with a few safety modifications due to the pandemic. The race, to be held on Thursday, Nov. 26, will be live and not virtual, according to Bruce Gregory, camp director. “In order to comply with

CDC guidelines and group size recommendations, we have changed our format,” Gregory said. “This year, the 5K race will be a time trial start format. The race will be scored off of chip time measured from runners’ start time to their finish time.” Gregory explained that there will be multiple start times running every 20 minutes beginning at 7:20 a.m.; the last start time will be at 10 a.m. Runners will need to sign up for their start time when they register. Check-in and race packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m. on Nov. 26. The 1-mile children’s run will not be held this year to accommodate the multiple 5K start times. The 5K (3.1-mile) race, which will be slightly modified because of the new format, will be a cross-country type race that will take runners through the camp and around the lake on a mixture of paved, gravel and grassy paths, including some hills. To register for the race, readers may visit www.telhaicamp.org/ events/turkey-bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and no race-day registrations will be accepted. In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. Several years ago, when Sarah Northrup was homeschooling her children, she discovered her daughter had dyslexia. “(It was) impossible to find help and support,” recalled Northrup. “I felt I was very isolated.” Northrup, who already had a degree in elementary and special education, responded by turning to the National Institute of Learning Development at Virginia University in Virginia Beach, Va., where she received her certification as an education therapist. She began tutoring

other homeschooled students who had dyslexia and other learning issues. “I found that many of the students I was serving (had) parents who were feeling a lot like I was feeling,” said Northrup. “I thought, ‘I can help three kids at a time … or I can start this program to serve a broader population.’ It had been on my heart for a very long time.” In fall of 2019, Northrup opened Firm Foundations Academy, a hybrid homeschooling program, which meets at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Currently, the school serves a total of more than 50 students in grades one through 10, with the goal of adding grades 11 and 12 in the next few years. “Our goal is for students in 11th and 12th grades to have partnerships to take classes at Lancaster Bible College or to have internships so they can go out to the community to get job training,” Northrup noted. “We offer a full scope of classes,” said Northrup, who is head of school for the academy. She listed English, math science, history, art, music, and Bible, among the classes, noting that she tries to offer an eclectic mix taught according to classical educational philosophy with a biblical worldview. “Our high school kids are doing leadership classes,” she noted. “They are learning about character development and then doing service projects out in the community every month.” As a hybrid, the academy represents a partnership between parents and teachers. “It’s teacher directed and parent supported,” explained Northrup. “The teachers supply all the content and lesson plans for parents.” Northrup explained that a reading assignment taught in school would be tied to components the student completes at home and then reinforced at school ending in the student writing a paper on the topic at home.
