Creating A Christmas Tradition BY ANN MEAD ASH

ore than two years ago, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales went to sleep one night and dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. She brought the ballet to Connie Dienner, director at Cavod Academy of the Arts. The result was “Wonder,” an original Christmas ballet, which was performed for the first time in Cavod Theatre in 2019. The story is suitable for family members of all ages. “Wonder,” choreographed and directed by Morales and featuring a cast of 37, will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. This year, “Wonder” will run on Fridays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Dec. 4 and 11, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Dec. 5 and 12, at 4 p.m.

M

“Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Sierra Hurst, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights - Twinkle, played by Sarah Blatt; Flicker, played by Annika Blake; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shop, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved. Morales made a few changes in this year’s production. “We will have an icicle battle scene,” she said. “I really wanted to focus on the juxtaposition between the lights, who are there to show what wonder is, and the icicles that represent staying in the mundane,” she said, explaining why she decided to expand the conflict between the two entities. “It almost affects the whole story line, but it doesn’t, and that’s exciting.”

As of Nov. 2, the top five requests for 2-1-1 assistance in Pennsylvania were housing and shelter at 42.1%, utilities at 17%, health care and COVID-19 assistance at 10%, employment and income 8.7%, and food at 6.2%. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations exist in Lancaster County specifically to meet these and other needs. For instance, Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in

the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. Each participating nonprofit has its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory The Lancaster County Community Foundation installed an policy, which is a new feature. Petra Church from pg 1 “ We collect 3,600 and 4,000 as an average,” said Petra representative Andrea Kauffman, who noted that Marilyn Coles oversees the Operation Christmas Child drop-off center at Petra and takes boxes to Baltimore to be processed after they are collected. “(Coles) will take a group of about 10 (volunteers) to Baltimore to do processing,” explained Kauffman. Information about how to pack a shoebox may be found at www.samaritanspurse.org. “There’s a whole lot of resources (there),” said Petra representative Jenny Sensenig. Actual shoeboxes or plastic boxes with snap-on lids may be used. Kauffman noted there are some specific items that should not be included in shoeboxes. “No liquids, no toothpaste, no candy, no toy weapons,” she stated. “What we say is to really think through what people will use.” Kauffman recommended a T-shirt, a soccer ball and pump, flashlights and head lamps with batteries, and string bags. Sensenig noted people should think broadly when participating in the program. “When you pack the shoebox, you want to have in

mind that you’re packing something special for the child that receives the box, but most of the time they will be distributing (items), so think outside of the one child because you are impacting that whole family.” Children who receive shoeboxes may choose to enroll in The Greatest Journey, a 12-lesson discipleship program that gives ministry partners a chance to develop long-term relationships with families and to share the love of Christ. There is a cost per box to ship gifts to a child. Boxes may be dropped off at designated locations from through Monday, Nov. 22. Drop-off center hours at Petra will be noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17; 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18; noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20; 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21; and 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Nov. 22. Readers who have questions about the dropoff schedule may call 717-354-5394 or email jennys@petra.church. Shirk spent the summer creating an educational display for the hammer. “When we acquired this hammerhead, we decided to make it interpretive, so people could understand how it was used,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. The hammerhead can be viewed near the original forge site along with two other intact hammerheads. Scheduled to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony are Caernarvon Township supervisors, members of the Berks County Historical Society and the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and state Rep. Dave Zimmerman. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony in the Ironmaster’s Mansion. According to a document provided by Ekdahl that explains how the forge operated, one of the main purposes of a working iron forge in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was to draw out the raw pig iron ingots received from local furnaces into bar iron that could be sent to blacksmiths who could transform them into wrought iron products. This involved heating the ingots and then hammering them to stretch the ingots into bars. Since the pig iron ingots were very large - several feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds - the hammers also had to be very large. The hammerheads alone weighed nearly 500 pounds. The hammer assembly was powered by a waterwheel, and cams on the wheel lifted the hammer up and allowed it to fall back down onto the anvil below. By placing the ingots or bar iron between the hammer and anvil, forge workers could refine and shape the metal into more workable forms for blacksmiths to use. “Imagine the sound it would have made. There were two hammers pounding, and that would have been going all the time,” said Ekdahl. “There was smoke from the forge as well. We are one of

After a modified Turkey Bowl was held last Thanksgiving at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook, the traditional event, featuring a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s run, will return on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25. Last year, the 5K race was run with staggered start times that took place every 20 minutes. Chip timing was used to record the runners start and finish times. To accommodate the multiple 5K start times, the 1-mile children’s run was not held. Bruce Gregory, camp direc-

tor, said organizers wanted to hold a live Turkey Bowl in 2020 rather than a virtual event. “Last year we had 223 total participants and we had 197 finishers in the 5K race,” he stated. “Many (participants) commented that they appreciated being able to do a race in person instead of virtually. Second Wind Race Timing, our chip timing company, helped us with a modified version so we could do the race in person.” The 5K race this year will again take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. While the course is primarily level, there are a few hills for runners to tackle. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will take place on the main grounds of the camp. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge.

ing, found its groove in game number five. The Spartans outscored Pequea Valley 56-0 on the road and returned home the following week to post a 36-0 Lancaster-Lebanon League victory over the Lebanon Cedars on October 8. As the season wrapped up on Friday, November 5, the Spartans had managed to take five of their final six games to finish the season at .500 (5-5). In those five victories, they outscored their opponents 223-43. The regular season finale was a non-league game at Elco where Harting threw for 188 yards, completing 12 of 18 pass attempts including four touchdowns. Two of the sophomore signal callers scoring strikes went to Derrick Lambert, who caught five passes for 47 yards on the night. It was the third straight game in which Garden Spot racked up over 300 total yards, including the 411 yards two weeks prior in a victory at

Lancaster Catholic. The game at Elco was a season-ending contest in which both teams were vying for a .500 finish. The Raiders fell to 4-6 with the loss. The Spartans charged ahead for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter - an advantage they held into the second half. Harting hit Tristin Sadowski for a 31-yard score and connected with Lambert on a nine-yard touchdown. Walker Martin, who would go on to finish with a phenomenal feat, kicked both extra points. A rushing touchdown by Joel Martin, who had a

team-high 67 yards on the ground, and Blake Weaver’s 15-yard touchdown catch made it 28-0 after the third stanza. The Harting-to-Lambert connection worked again on a 22-yard score in the fourth quarter. Walker Martin capped the scoring with a 51-yard field goal - the longest in Garden Spot history. It was also the longest by any L-L League kicker this season. Two more stars on offense were Tyler Gillenwater (40 rushing yards on six carries) and Zechariah Nagle, who caught four passes for 85 yards.

Feeding Pennsylvania Sets Fundraising Campaign Feeding Pennsylvania is teaming up with PA Eats and Breweries in PA this November for a monthlong fundraising campaign, Hops for Hunger, to raise funds for Pennsylvanians facing hunger. As part of the inaugural Hops for Hunger program, people are invited to visit participating breweries during the month of November, and the businesses will donate proceeds from a beer of their choice, host special events, and more to engage their guests about the issue of hunger in Pennsylvania. Events will be announced and updated at www.feedingpa.org/hops forhunger. Local participants include The Vegetable Hunter, Harrisburg; Lovedrafts Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; Pour Man’s Brewing Company, Ephrata; Moo-Duck Brewery, Elizabethtown; Our Town Brewery, Lancaster; Wolf Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; and Desperate Times Brewery, Carlisle. The concept of the campaign came from Feeding Pennsylvania’s community manager, Corinne Foster, who doubles as a Central Pennsylvania food blogger, Fosterthefoodie. Through her food blog, Foster incorporates different ways of partnering with local restaurants on promotions that encourage individuals to support local restaurants while raising awareness and funds to support anti-hunger efforts. This once-localized approach eventually sparked an idea to take these efforts statewide. PA Eats joined the campaign because of its mission See Feeding PA pg 11
