SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVI • NO 49
we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive “ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. See “ExtraGive” pg 4
Dairy Royalty Visits Kinder-Haus BY ANN MEAD ASH
n Oct. 12, Amy Arment, who normally works in the infant room at Kinder-Haus Nursery Daycare, located at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, spent part of the day assisting her daughter Sarah as she spoke to children age 1 through prekindergarten about dairy farming and the importance of drinking milk. Sarah is the 2020 Lancaster
O
County Dairy Princess. She was named to that post at the end of May by the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Promotional Services. Even though Sarah was the only contestant, the organization held a virtual pageant, and Sarah was required to answer questions about her knowledge of dairy farming before she was awarded the title. In her role, she is available to speak to civic organizations, school groups, and at libraries. The presentations
Sarah gives are customized to the age of her audience. She can also man grocery store displays, and she completed a video for the virtual Family Farm Days event in the summer. Sarah first applied for the contest in April. “To be a dairy princess, you need to have some connection to the dairy industry,” Sarah ex plained. Sarah’s uncles on both sides of her family along with her grandparents are dairy farmers. Two of her cousins have also served as
dairy princesses. Amy introduced her daughter to each class at Kinder-Haus, explaining that she is a princess who came to talk to them about cows and milk. Using a puppet to first greet the children, Sarah read “Out and About at the Dairy Farm.” Sarah told students that dairy farms provide milk for cereal and ice cream and asked if students knew what else was made from milk, eliciting answers such as “cheese” and “butter.”

Turkey Bowl To Run Live On Thanksgiving Morning
DISCOUNTS FOR LARGE QUANTITY ORDERS!
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook will hold its annual 5K Turkey Bowl Race this Thanksgiving, with a few safety modifications due to the pandemic. The race, to be held on Thursday, Nov. 26, will be live and not virtual, according to Bruce Gregory, camp director. “In order to comply with CDC guidelines and group size recommendations, we have changed our format,” Gregory said. “This year, the 5K race will be a time trial start format. The race will be scored off of chip time measured from runners’ start time to their finish time.” Gregory explained that there will be multiple start times running every 20 minutes beginning at 7:20 a.m.; the last start time will be at 10 a.m. Runners will need to sign up for their start time

With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County
residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted
downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info /downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/extra givecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want
HAYSTACK DINNER & GOSPEL CONCERT BANDS:
folks to really feel like they’re prime players in the day. It’s their excitement and enthusiasm that has made the ExtraGive as successful as it has been over the years in Lancaster County.” For more information about the ExtraGive, readers may contact Spangler at aspangler@lancfound.org or 717-397-1629, ext. 113.

Sarah explained that Holstein cows are one of many kinds of dairy cows and that Holsteins produce more milk than other breeds. “Cows need more than grass and water,” she read, going on to explain that cow food, called silage, is made by mixing corn and grass. “A milking cow can eat up to 100 pounds of food a day,” Sarah remarked. She explained that calves remain with their mothers for a few hours after being born before females are moved to a pen in the calf barn. Sarah also sang songs with the children and led crafts, including making a cow puppet from a paper bag. In one room at Kinder-Haus, laminated cow cutouts were hidden for the children to find. As the children brought the cows they found to Sarah, she read the names of the dairy products written on the back of each cow. Sarah also talked about the nutrition associated with drinking milk every day. The homeschooled senior, who resides in the ELANCO School District, took part in the 64th annual Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Pageant, held in September in Altoona, studying for a dairy knowledge quiz and presenting a speech and a skit she wrote. She also submitted recipes for lasagna, artichoke dip, and her great grandmother Mabel Sensenig’s sugar cookie recipe, which was chosen for the pageant cookbook. After graduating, Sarah plans to attend college to study biology with an environmental emphasis. Readers who would like to inquire about presentations may email armentX4 @hotmail.com.

SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) is a free onehour after-school music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through 12 SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the program benefits the students in several ways. “Music is not only fun but research underscores it as one of the finest disciplines to help a child succeed,” she said. When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in March, SWAN classes ended, and spring concerts were canceled. “The music stopped,” said Vuolo, adding that lessons can only resume when
it is deemed safe for teachers to return. Hoping to provide a musical outlet for students until in-person classes could be held, SWAN quickly created instructional videos that were posted on YouTube and provided to SDoL for students to access, but Vuolo reported SWAN was not happy with the results. “We did not see them interacting with those videos,” she recalled. To engage students in lessons again, SWAN began enrolling students for individual lessons on Zoom. “That’s when we discovered how few actually had access to the internet and devices,”
said Vuolo. Still determined to reach more children, SWAN teachers began working with the small percentage of children who could be reached via Zoom, expanding to offer violin, keyboard, and guitar online. “The lessons went beautifully,” reported Vuolo. “The students really enjoyed having interaction with their teachers and were able to learn quickly.” In August, when SDoL opted to open school in an online format, SWAN learned that the district would allow SWAN students to use the school-provided internet devices with a link to Zoom to connect. “More See SWAN pg 7

SWAN from pg 6 children could receive music lessons again,” said Vuolo, who added that each week the organization has worked to expand student enrollment. “We still have a way to go before every child can have weekly lessons,” said Vuolo recently. As SWAN program director, Brooke Beazley monitors each private Zoom lesson. “I see how beneficial the Zoom lessons have been,” said Beazley. “Every student is making progress and improving their ability to focus, listen, and communicate. They are developing patience as they learn to play their instruments, and they have been practicing and attending lessons diligently. The lesson is a stress-free and fun experience.” In addition to providing students with a stress release, Beazley noted the sense of pride a student feels when a teacher acknowledges their progress. “Through music, our students are developing important life skills that they can bring to their academics and other aspects of their lives.” Terri Glick, who is a counselor at Buchanan Elementary, shared that SWAN has been beneficial to SDoL students. “I am thrilled that Zoom lessons are being offered,” she said. “(The program) has allowed students

In a classic battle between two strong volleyball teams, York Suburban came back from a 2-0 deficit to top Garden Spot 3-2 in the District Three Class 3A championship match in New Holland, Tuesday, November 10. The Spartans topped the Trojans 25-23 and 25-20 in the first two sets, defending against hitters like Eliana Rodgers (18 kills) and Madison Perring (13 kills). “We knew they had big hitters and in order to slow that down, we had to win the serve and pass game,” said Garden Spot head coach Lauren DiPiano. “We did that in the first two sets. Our defense could work around who they were setting. In the third and fourth sets, we got away Photo by Kirk Neidermyer from that and made a few errors. Fairmount Posts Food Drive A food drive will take place at Fairmount, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, through Monday, Nov. 23. The collected items will be donated to two local organizations, Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank and Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services. Both organizations have experienced an increased need for their services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tables for food collection will be set up in the Wheat Ridge entryway on the west
side of the Fairmount campus. Local community residents may drop off unexpired food items and paper goods just inside the first set of doors. Donations most needed at this time are juices, syrups, canned fruits, soups, beans, meats, vegetables, cereals, condiments, peanut butter, jelly, and paper goods. Donors are asked to bring unexpired food items only. Directions may be found on the web at www.fairmounthomes.org.
In the opening set, the Spartans (16-2) found themselves trailing 16-10 before they went on a six-point run. They took advantage of three Trojan service errors and scored the set’s final three points after York had inched ahead 23-22. York Suburban had a 15-13 lead in the second set before Garden Spot went on an 8-2 run en route to the 25-20 win. The Trojans’ eight-point run in the third set, while trailing Garden Spot 15-13, sparked a 25-18 victory. In the fourth set, the Spartans had a comeback of their own, charging to a 12-11 lead to erase a three-point deficit. But serving with a 24-23 lead, Garden Spot was unable to put away the pesky opponent. Backand-forth went the set with Garden Spot taking leads of 26-25, 27-26 and 29-28. The Trojans (17-0) snuck in with three more points to win 31-29.

“ Winning that fourth one with the extra points - the back-and-forth - gave them such momentum,” DiPiano said. “When they get into their system, they have a lot of weapons and options to worry about.” The Spartans did pull out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker set. As was the case in the fourth set, the Trojans fought back to eventually take a 108 lead, only to see the Spartans even the score. York Suburban finally managed to finish on top 15-12 despite two more Spartan spurts. “We don’t believe Photo by Kirk Neidermyer in giving up. In conjunction with the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), Historic Poole Forge will host a 24-hour online auction on Friday, Nov. 20. Items that will be available include quilts, services donated by local businesses and artwork. ExtraGive invites people to make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org on Nov. 20. Those who visit the Poole Forge site will have an additional opportunity to take part in the auction. “For Historic Poole Forge there are two options. You can donate directly on the website or click on the event that we are having. The event link will take you to the online auction,” explained Dawn Ekdahl, executive director of Historic Poole Forge. “It’s only 24 hours - midnight to midnight.” She said that an auction is normally part of Poole Forge Day, which was scheduled for Sept. 19 this year, but was canceled because of COVID-19 lim-

itations on large gatherings. “Because this year everything is virtual, we did not have our big silent auction and decided to do it during ExtraGive,” she said, noting that in typical years, ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. “There are a lot of organizations that are doing different kinds of events this year. Usually, they are in person.” The online auction will include two quilts. One of these is a community quilt, which is normally on display during Poole Forge Day. “We do a community quilt each year. It’s mostly (created by) our Mennonite and Amish neighbors. The women decide what pattern they like to do, and I pick the colors. Over the winter, our neighbors will make blocks and in January and February my mailbox is full of quilt squares,” Ekdahl said. “We have a big quilting day (to sew the squares together) in March or April.” She added that a highlight of this year’s quilt is a square that depicts the Poole Forge covered bridge.
Other auction items will include the following: a balloon ride donated by Air Ventures Balloon Rides, Glenmoore; an airplane ride donated by Sara Wolfe; a children’s nature program for a party or group donated by Phil Whitman; an archery lesson for two donated by Bob Lauffer; a private spinning and weaving lesson by PJ Johnson from Lancaster Spinners and Weavers; a halfhour massage donated by Churchtown Therapeutic Massage; five pony rides donated by Chateau Pony Parties, East Earl; one professional photography shoot by Kirk Neidemeyer; quillows donated by Patton’s Auto Upholstery Shop, Narvon; two tickets to the Mother’s Day Tea at Poole Forge; a print by local artist Greg Yoder; a photographic
print of the Poole Forge covered bridge; and a sauerkraut making course with a Poole Forge covered bridge crock. Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon. For more information, readers may call 484-797-5302, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or search for “Historic Poole Forge” on Facebook.
