Out Of Our Abundance Ministerium Schedules Annual Service By Ann Mead Ash

The ELANCO Ministerium Community Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, 432 Reading Road, East Earl, on Wednesday, Nov. 27, beginning at 7 p.m. Ken Evitts, pastor of St. John Center United Church of Christ and ministerium president, will open the service. The speaker for the evening will be the Rev. Shane Symolon, pastor of Pine Grove Church, Bowmansville. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite; Jack Peters, pastor of New Holland Baptist; and Kris Poontajak of Cedar Grove Church will also take part in the service, along with other members of the ministerium. As in the past, the offering will benefit

a local ministry. This year, CrossNet’s Housing Initiative, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCO-area individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness, will be the beneficiary. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet, said that the organization believes that every person in the community should have a safe and affordable place to live. The housing program now has two new apartments located near Petra Church, for a total of three apartments. “We are planning for six additional units in April 2020,” said Dahl, who added that the ministry is pleased to be the beneficiary of the offering at the Thanksgiving service. “It is an honor to partner with the ministerium and our local churches to address those experiencing homelessness in ELANCO,” she said. “I am thankful for

Christmas Train To Make Stop In New Holland Where Water Quality And NHAHS Plans Holiday Farming Legacy Meet Displays And Activities By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

Wilbur Horning of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) has not forgotten what it is like to be a child waiting in line to see Santa Claus. “Every December when Christmas on Main is held, Santa Claus visits Kauffman’s,” said Wilbur, referring to Santa’s visits to the NHAHS Museum in the Kauffman building, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, during Christmas on Main, which is held the first Saturday of December. “People go to St. Stephen Church for breakfast, and then the (children) come up here and stand in line and wait to see Santa,” continued Wilbur. “Someone said it would be nice to have a train layout here for the (children) while they’re waiting to see Santa Claus.” See Christmas Train pg 12

Looking forward to showcasing a model train layout at the New Holland Area Historical Society for Christmas are (from left) Art Johnsen, Wilbur Horning, Lloyd Ziegler, and Tom Hawk. Members of the Garden Spot Village Train Club created the layout for children and others to enjoy while waiting to visit with Santa during Christmas on Main.

Terre Hill Mayor Bob Rissler knows that it takes cooperation among a number of parties to reach a mutually beneficial goal. “We all have a big stake in water quality,” said Rissler, who listed residences and farms among area properties that are affected by water issues. “We all need to protect our water supply.” Carolyn Hildebrand, manager of West Cocalico Township, said that for farmers, both economic performance and farming legacy are important issues. “People want their children to farm, but what are they leaving for them?” she asked. “Is the soil going to be healthy or not?”

Area farmers are invited to a free Farmers Field Day on Dec. 9 at Shady Maple Banquet Center. A variety of topics will be on the agenda, including land productivity, well safety, and legal issues. To address such issues, a number of municipalities have joined forces to offer a Farmers Field Day on Monday, See Farmers Field Day pg 8

male winner was Ben Zook of Gordonville, with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds. The top overall female winner was Traci Tempone of Lancaster, with a time of 20:52. “We had 38 finishers in the 1-mile fun run and 353 finishers in the 5K race,” he said, noting that the 5K will be professional timed. Gregory and the other race organizers are hoping for good weather this year. “Thanksgiving is a week later this year, so hopefully it won’t be colder than last year,” he noted. “We had frigid weather last year, which we think kept some runners from coming out.” Gregory said that the Thanksgiving event has become a tradition with area families. “Besides the Honey Brook area, we have runners from Downingtown, Gap, Oxford and New Holland,” he stated. Among the participants in 2018 were members of the Stratton family of Downingtown, including Rebecca and Eric and their children, Aidan, Gabe and Meredith. “I have been doing the Turkey Bowl since 2014; it was my first 5K,” Rebecca reported. “My family started doing it with me in 2015. My daughter does the fun run, and last year my husband joined me and my two (sons) for the first time in the 5K.” Rebecca said the event is ideal for local families. “It is something that I do, and everyone saw how much fun it was, and they joined me,” she said, adding, “We live in Guthriesville, so it’s not too far and our kids take homeschool classes there. “I cook the turkey and we head off,” she

added. “It is a tradition, and my kids said they wouldn’t miss it for the world.” As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “The turkey wishes to remain anonymous. He’ll be back this year and wants to keep the mystery of his identity going,” said Gregory. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses. The sponsors are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@ telhaicamp.org or visit the website. Pictured on front: The Stratton family, including (from left) Aidan, Eric, Gabe, Meredith and Rebecca, joined by the Turkey Bowl mascot, participated in last year’s Turkey Bowl at Tel Hai Camp. Brenda Long, a foster care and adoption supervisor with Bethanna in Lancaster, would like to see county residents broaden their concept of adoption. “Sometimes people think adoption is only for infants and young children, but we want people to know there are a lot of children age 10 and older looking for loving homes,” said Long. Long and other staff members of local adoption organizations who have gathered under the ACLC (Adoption Coalition of Lancaster County) banner hope to change ideas about adoption by holding a special event during November, which is National Adoption Awareness Month. As they have for nearly a decade, members of the group have arranged for a free movie showing, which will take place at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m., and the movie will start at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets and popcorn will be available while supplies last. This year’s movie will be “Frozen 2,” which will be released a few days prior to the event. The movie, an animated musical,

follows the story of two sisters, Elsa, the Snow Queen, and Anna, as they leave their kingdom of Arendelle for a faraway adventure. Friends Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven return to take part in the sisters’ journey. Staff members from agencies that are part of the coalition will be at the ACLC booth to answer questions, and SWAN, the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, will also have a booth at the event. “We are available that evening to talk to attendees,” said Long, who added that she expects to hear a lot of questions from those interested in learning more about adoption. According to Brooke May of Families United Network, more than 400 children in Lancaster County may be in foster care at any one time. “We want families to understand that adopting through foster care is not expensive,” said Kim Miller of Pressley Ridge. “Not all kinds of adoption come with a high cost.” Long noted that the organization would like to break stereotypes about what types of

families can adopt. “We need all types of families,” she noted. “If they love children and are willing to learn how to parent children who come from hard places (they could help),” she said, mentioning that single parents or parents who have already raised their biological children may be good candidates. Local organizations that are part of ACLC include Bethanna, Bethany Christian Services, Children’s Home of York/Children’s Home of Reading, COBYS Family Services, Community Services Group, Families United Network, Pressley Ridge, and Lancaster County Children and Youth Social Service Agency. It is not necessary to register prior to the event. Readers who would like more information may call SWAN at 800-585-SWAN. SPORTS Spartans Fall in State Volleyball Semifinals Columbia • Conestoga Valley • Donegal • Elizabethtown • Garden Spot • Hempfield • Lampeter-Strasburg Manheim Central • Manheim Township • Penn Manor • Pequea Valley • Solanco • Warwick

by Ara Grigorian Volleyball is a peculiar game. It’s a sport that thrives on momentum and irony.

The pass you receive from your opponent, who sets you up perfectly for a full rotation of your shoulder and a spike onto the opponent’s side of the net - a spike that gives a radar gun quite the jolt as well - is dug out safely by an opposing player laying out her body - at the risk of sore knees and wrists - to bump the ball back up for the continuation of a volley. There is another ball that one can daintily dink over the net and somehow it floats downward like a windswept feather yet finds open space for a point. A long volley with great hustle by players on both sides of the net might simply end with the ball going awry off an all-star player’s bump, fading out of bounds and

into the bleachers. Teamwork and defense are certainly aspects of this fast-paced, high-intensity sport. It’s a sport that Garden Spot’s team has played very well in the fall of 2019. In fact, the Spartans played on Tuesday night at Spring-Ford High School’s gymnasium against the Southern Lehigh Spartans in a PIAA Class-AAA state semifinal match. The Spartans from Garden Spot grabbed the momentum early on, taking a 25-21 victory in the opening set. The Spartans from Southern Lehigh, who came into the match as the District 11 champs, holding an 18-1 record, extended their slim 13-11 lead in the second set by scoring eight of the next 12 points. They went on to win that second set 25-16. Southern Lehigh (19-1) also won the next two sets, ending Garden

Spot’s season at 19-4. The Spartans of District 11 won 21-25, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-18. “We served really well and got them out of system in the first set,” Lauren DiPiano, Garden Spot’s first-year head coach, said following the match. “They made a few errors at crucial momentum points for them. We were able to exploit that and keep rolling. I felt our girls came out strong

and jumped on them early. “We were playing our game. In passing and serving we did really well,” DiPiano added. “Our hitters were able to terminate balls up front.” In the third set, Southern Lehigh charged ahead to an 8-0 lead. The Section Two champion Garden Spot Spartans cut the deficit to 8-3. But that five-point deficit would be the closest they would come before

losing the set 25-12. “In the third set, I thought we weren’t able to get in-system hits or kills,” said DiPiano. “Our hitters were trying to tip around them. They are a good team so they were able to use that as momentum to transition and get kills against us.

Defensively, we were just chasing. “They exploited our defensive weaknesses,” continued the coach. “Even on sets that were out of system, they were able to put pressure on our defense.” In the fourth set Garden Spot was looking to regain momentum. After

Bird-In-Hand Stage Presents Holiday Show The Blue Gate Musical “A Bird-in-Hand Christmas to Remember” has returned to the Bird-in-Hand Stage. The show tells the story of the Amish owners of a thrift shop, a mother dealing with dementia, a sister with control issues, festive neighbors, and a painting of unknown value. “It’s a story of family and how different people deal with unusual situations,” Blue Gate Musicals composer and director Wally Nason explained. “It touches on issues that people are dealing with and can relate to, but in a way that’s really fun and really tender at the same time.” The Christmas show includes comedy, drama, and musical numbers. It will run on the Bird-in-Hand Stage through Saturday, Dec. 28. For more information about Bird-in-Hand Stage, readers may visit www.bird-in-hand.com. Bird-in-Hand Stage is located at 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike A, Bird-in-Hand.

Seeking to implement that idea, Wilbur turned to Henry Black of the Garden Spot Village Train Club for help. Black connected him to Tom Hawk, who enlisted Art Johnsen and Art Algeo for help. The trio met with Don Horning of NHAHS to learn more about the area at the museum where the train would run. After considering three different layouts, the club members went to work on a complex double figure eight. It will take four minutes for the train to traverse the entire track. More than 15 of the 23 members of the train club worked on building the HO layout, which is divided into four segments - a farm area, a railroad depot, a downtown area, and an industrial section. There is also a mountain tunnel where the train will

Agriculture, Musselman Lumber, Stoltzfus Meats, Yoder’s Country Market, and J.B. Zimmerman. “We were thinking of a little figure eight, but these guys took the idea and ran with it,” said Wilbur, who added that he was pleased to have the chance to collaborate with the train club. The club created the layout so it can be easily stored and used annually. The layout will be part of “The Joy of Toy Trains,” which will also be featured in two display cases overseen by Lou Ann Miller. The cases are filled with trains from American Flyer, Hafner, Williams, and Ives. The display trains were loaned to NHAHS by area residents Lloyd Ziegler, Dick and Barb Enders, Dr. Paul Herr, and Robin Miller.

disappear and re-emerge from the other side. “Each area gives a different flavor to the overall layout,” said Johnsen. The dairy farm features custom-painted Holstein cows and a laboriously made tiny split rail fence. A custom chain-link fence is also included. “We got signage for local businesses to put on the buildings to make it feel like New Holland,” said Johnsen, who pointed out a building on Main Street that resembles the bank building across from the historical society. “The buildings are clustered similar to the way they are here (in downtown),” said Johnsen, adding that organizers purposely designed the layout to give a feeling of New Holland.” Names of businesses on the buildings in the layout include New Holland

Wilbur is happy that the children will be able to enjoy the trains while waiting in line to meet Santa on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. “It’s just wonderful - an amazing thing that the (children) will love,” he said. “We plan to do it on an annual basis, and we won’t be in a hurry to take it down when Christmas is over.” Lou Ann, who noted that she hopes the adults enjoy the display cases as much as the children enjoy the train layout, noted that “The Joy of Toy Trains” layout and display cases will be featured at the museum through the end of January 2020. The museum is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.nhhistorical.com.

WED, DEC 18 @ 4:00 PM

A new theater group - Footlight Theater - has started in Paradise, and it will soon present its first production, “Rumpelstiltskin.” The play will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Land Christian Center, located in the Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall, 3375-2 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise. The play, which is geared toward elementary-age children, will be a “pay what you will” event. Joe Dunfee is the artistic director for Footlight Theater. Last spring, he was presenting a marionette Passion Play at the Holy Land Christian Center when the owner asked him to produce an additional show. Dunfee decided to initially focus on familiar fairy tales for a young audience. Currently, the venue for the show is being prepared for the upcoming production, with the installation of new curtains and lighting. The production will have a human cast, though puppets may occasionally be

recruited as cast members. Footlight Theater’s goal is to present content that is consistent with traditional Judeo-Christian ethics. Some plays, such as for Christmas and Easter, will have more intensive Christian content, but non-Christian audience members are welcome. Dunfee said he is firmly committed to letting parents know the content before they come see a show. In the first production by Footlight, “Rumpelstiltskin,” the miller’s daughter is portrayed as boasting of her abilities to help bolster her social status. When the prince talks to her about this, he quotes from Proverbs 31, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies … Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Dunfee also feels that good theater for a young audience should be enjoyable for adults, and he has included some content geared toward them as well.
