Season’s eatings, treatings, and meetings
A very Christmassy market
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Barb Martin, associate director of mission advancement at Garden Spot Village (GSV), the annual GSV Christmas market is a popular attraction. “It’s very well attended,” shared Martin, who noted that 1,000 to 1,500 visitors enjoy the shopping and activities associated with the celebration.

In New Holland, the Christmas kickoff event is called Christmas on Main. The annual observation closes Main Street and Roberts Avenue and lines the streets with food vendors and live performers while bringing Santa to Towne Centre Green ahead of the community Christmas tree lighting.
“Christmas on Main is the hallmark event of the season in New Holland,” said organizer Gina Dissinger. “(Christmas on Main) fills our town with the joy and warmth of the holidays.”

“Continuing this cherished tradition is essential to the heart of New Holland.”
In 2023, the date of the event was changed to the Saturday after Thanksgiving to avoid conflict with other area celebrations. The 2024 event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, with the Christmas Craft Market opening in the

The Misfits on a Mission Relay for Life Team Santa’s Workshop Holiday Shopping Bazaar for 2024 is billed as the 14th annual, but organizer Sharon Groff believes the event may date back even further. “We’ve probably been holding it longer, but we have records going back 14 years,” said Groff.
The bazaar, which raises funds to fight cancer, will be held in the Garden Spot Fire Rescue hall, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on
Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The vendor and craft show will offer a variety of items for sale, food, and a Chinese auction. There is no admission fee charged to attend.
“With more than 40 vendors and crafters, it will be a packed house,” shared Groff. “We will have (items) to appeal to all tastes.” Among the crafters at the bazaar will be those selling gloves, hats, and other knitted items and woodcrafts. “Crocheted animals are really popular,” noted Groff. One vendor will offer gifts

into a holiday-themed event featuring Mrs. Claus, food, shopping, and train room displays.
To appeal to young attendees, organizers have chosen to focus on the heart of the season, with live hourly readings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on the lower level of the Village Square, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Cookie decorating for children featuring ornamental cookies resembling Peanuts characters will begin at 10 a.m. The Train Room, where vol-

Members of the GSV Wood Shop will offer handmade creatures for sale at a Village Square display and in the hallway outside the Wood Shop. “They will have everything from children’s toys and games to home and kitchen things to lovely sculptural (pieces),” said Martin.

will have a display, as well as a maker of live-edge furniture from driftwood and author Henry Youndt.
“The Plants and Petals Club will (sell) live centerpieces and wreaths,” shared Martin, who mentioned a cross-stitch club will have a display as well. Other residents contribute by donating to the bake sale, which will open at 10 a.m.
“It’s incredibly popular,” said Martin, who added that baked goods are usually sold out by noon.
The Maker’s Market will feature GSV resident artists and local artisans, some of whom have a special connection to GSV. “The Maker’s Market is my greatest joy,” gushed Martin. “I just love seeing what artisans can create.” The nearly 40 vendor spaces in the market will be filled by creators like Linda Binder, who makes purses, winter shawls, and capes, and Jars of Clay by Sheena, a vendor who uses speckled clay with white glazes to shape mugs and other items. Martin said that a designer of jewelry using semi-precious gems
A silent auction featuring gift baskets and experiences will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gift baskets, which are donated by residents and employees, will include a Peanuts-themed basket. Other themes that are traditional to the auction include a baker’s basket, a pet basket, and a basket containing a small Christmas tree decorated with cash. Experiences that will go up for bids include hot air balloon ride tickets, passes to Applecross Country Club in Downingtown, Allegro Orchestra Lancaster tickets, Fulton Theatre tickets, and tickets to the Turkey Hill Experience. Other holiday shopping opportunities at the event will be provided by the Linden, Artisans Corner, and Share & Care Thrift Store.
Food to satisfy hungry shoppers will be available for purchase at Charlie’s Village Square Café, Refresh, the Harvest Table, and the Terrace Dining Room. Proceeds from the Village Christmas Market are donated to the GSV Benevolent Fund to aid residents whose finances have been exhausted. Fourth-grade students at Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) School honored the saints who have gone before them with a presentation to the school community and families on Nov. 1. Each student, under the direction of teacher Jennifer Dodson, had chosen and researched the life of a saint. On Nov. 1, the students dressed in costume and told the story of their chosen saint’s life to their schoolmates and the parishioners in attendance. The presentations provided historical information about figures such as St. Francis of Assisi, St. Lucy, St. John Bosco, and St. Thomas More.
Students at OMPH School have also recently
participated in the Art Goes to School program, implemented by art teacher Patricia Jacobs. This program aims to make fine art accessible to elementary students and stimulate an interest and delight in art from all schools of art and historical periods. Art Goes to School collaborates with the Barnes Foundation, an art museum in Philadelphia, and the University of Pennsylvania.
New program aims to improve work zone safety
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) have launched a new, statewide training program to improve new driver safety and roadway worker protection. The launch took place at Carlisle High School to highlight teen driver safety during National Teen Driver Safety Week. Pennsylvania’s New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is a training project that uses videos, infographics, knowledge checks, and testimonials to teach new drivers work zone laws, signage, and key facts, in addition to offering real-life scenarios to enhance understanding. The new program
launched during National Teen Driver Safety Week in October; this annual observance aims to provide education on safe driving to teens and all new drivers in the commonwealth.
The free, 35-minute virtual New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is currently available in English and Spanish. The transportation agencies will also collaborate on hands-on training opportunities to supplement the course. Last October, Oklahoma became the first state in the nation to require new drivers to pass a work zone safety course to get their licenses. After hearing about Oklahoma’s program, the PA Turnpike developed a plan to introduce a similar initiative and has been working with PennDOT to
make it a reality. The project was funded through $50,000 from the Federal Highway Administration’s State Transportation Innovation Council Incentive Program.
While the program is free and encouraged for all Pennsylvania residents, it is especially geared for new drivers.
Key factors in crashes involving teen drivers in Pennsylvania include driver inexperience, driver distractions, driving too fast for conditions, and improper or careless turning. The risk of a crash involving any of these factors can be reduced through practice, limiting the number of passengers riding with a teen driver, obeying all rules of the road, and

using common sense. The joint training project extends PennDOT and the PA Turnpike’s collaboration on increased work zone safety awareness. Both organizations host work zone-related educational events throughout the year. In March, PennDOT and the PA Turnpike, in partnership with the Pennsylvania State Police, started enforcement of the statewide Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program, which uses vehicle-mounted systems and electronic speed timing devices to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more.

Registration is available for the Dec. 6 virtual open house at www.lbc.edu/meet-us.
In addition, LBC will present its 2024 Christmas concerts beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 22 in Good Shepherd Chapel on the Lancaster campus. Two additional performances are planned for 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The concerts, titled “Gloria in Excelsis - An
