A Court of Honor for Eagle Scout Wyatt Wright, son of David and Juliana Wright of East Earl, was held on Nov. 6 at Twin Valley Bible Church, Narvon. The accomplishment was the culmination of a journey that began in 2016 when Wyatt, an East Earl resident and member of Scout Troop 264, Mohnton, set his sights on the goal. Wyatt is a homeschool graduate and an aspiring pilot, who is looking forward to starting college next semester. The speaker at the Court of Honor was 1st Lt. A Passion For Building - In Miniature n 2012, mason John Diener began work on a project that would eventually fill the front yard of his home off Red Well Road near the boundary of ELANCO and Pequea Valley school districts. Several months after his death in March of 2021, the tiny village, including a covered bridge he created on a scale of 1 foot to 1 inch would be moved to Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, to bring delight to the visitors there possibly for generations to come.

Heather noted that it took John about a year to finish each building and that she often helped him with the village and also with birdhouses and feeders they would create to enter in the New Holland Fair competitions. One building in the group familiar to Pequea Valley-area residents is a replica of the Zimmerman store in Intercourse. Steve noted that 20,000 bricks were used to create the building and that John laid them with tweezers one brick at a time. “(John) was very creative and very meticulous in his work,” said Steve. Cloister Plans Open House, Music Program Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, has announced two upcoming activities. The Candlelight Open House will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors may stroll the lantern-lined paths of the Cloister and explore the original buildings of Ephrata’s first settlement. Inside, craftspeople, including Fraktur artist Emily Smucker-Beidler and Matt and Elaine Vardjan of Pennsylvania Folk Art Papers, will share their talents. Spinners will be at work in the Weaver’s House, and in the Printing Office the letterpress will be in operation. The Ephrata Cloister Chorus and

harpist Joanne Swords-Wang will offer short programs throughout the evening in the original Meetinghouse, providing a preview of Christmas at the Cloister. Visitors may make a small ornament and enjoy refreshments in the Visitor Center. In the museum store, attendees will find locally made items. The event will also offer the opportunity to meet some of the people who help bring the site to life and learn about the available volunteer opportunities. All staff, volunteers and demonstrators will be masked, and attendees are asked to wear a mask while indoors.

There is an admission fee for anyone age 3 and above. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at https://ephrata-cloister -associates.ticketleap.com/ candlelight-open-house-2021/. The Cloister will welcome the holiday season with the traditional music program Christmas at the Cloister on Monday, Dec. 13, and Tuesday, Dec. 14. The program will occur each night at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Held in the original 1741 Saal or Meetinghouse, the lessons and carols style program combines the Christmas story with seasonal music and carols for the congregation. The program features the talents of the Ephrata Cloister

Chorus under the direction of Martin Hinkley. Following the program, participants may enjoy mulled cider and cookies in the Visitor Center. Seating is limited, and advance tickets are required. Tickets can be purchased at https://ephrata-cloister -associates.ticketleap .com/christmas-at-the-cloister -2021/, in person at the museum store at Ephrata Cloister, or by mail. Seniors Can Enjoy A Free Christmas Meal Rain, sleet or snow can’t stop Helen Bechtold from giving back to seniors on Christmas Day. “I’ve dug my car out of the snow and driven in to serve this meal,” said Bechtold, who, along with Sis Luzader, has been offering a free lunch for more than 30 years. Even a pandemic won’t stop the “Columbia Christmas Ladies,” although it has changed their plans just a bit. Like last year, this year’s lunch will only be offered to go, but seniors will have the opportunity to come inside and pick up their meals. The lunch will be served on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St. The lunch will include ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce and a dessert. Seniors will also receive a gift bag full of a variety of goodies. “No one goes home without a present,” Bechtold said. She began serving the meal to seniors 34 years ago, when she worked as director of the Columbia Senior Center. Luzader joined her a year later. “ We wanted to give seniors who are alone on Christmas not just a meal but also a chance to be with other people,” Bechtold stated. “We wanted to let them know that when the holiday is here, people in the community are here for them.” The meal is open to all seniors age 55 and up throughout Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Bechtold noted that seniors have come from York County and even from out of state in past years. “This is not just for lowincome seniors. It’s open to any senior who is looking for a meal or who would otherwise be spending the holiday alone,” Bechtold explained. “Maybe they have family who live out of the area or maybe they don’t have any family. It’s open to everyone.” The fire hall donates the space for the meal, and the Columbia Lions Club provides donations as well. Bechtold also encourages donations of cash or gift cards from the community to support the event. Members of the Donegal High School wrestling

team help with setup on Christmas Eve. Although the meal is not a sit-down event this year, Bechtold said there is still an opportunity to visit with friends. “We can introduce people who may be new in town and encourage fellowship while they pick up their meals,” she noted. Bechtold said that watching people connect with each other is her favorite aspect of the event. “I love seeing smiles on people’s faces,” she com-

mented. “That’s the best part of Christmas for me. It’s knowing we are spreading joy. We want to make Christmas an enjoyable day for everyone.” Masks and social distancing will be required for meal pickup. Reservations are required for the meal by Friday, Dec. 17. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Delivery and transportation options will not be available this year. To make a reservation, call Bechtold at 717-397-2267 or Luzader at 717-684-0128.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced the receipt of a grant from Conagra Brands Foundation to help provide food to children and families in need. This grant will enable the CPFB to increase its capacity to distribute food to its partners through the purchase of new pallet jacks and other essential warehouse equipment. The gift will also help the food bank expand its equity, diversity, and inclusion programs to address inequities of hunger in

communities of color. Conagra Brands Foundation has partnered with Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, to help address hunger in communities where Conagra employees live and work. Conagra locations in central Pennsylvania have partnered with the food bank for more than 20 years, with employees actively volunteering their time and supporting various events and initiatives such as Summer Feeding Programs for youths.

ject, there was planning and paperwork (concerning) equipment, manpower, time, money, and safety,” recalled Wyatt. “The main thing I learned … is that no matter how much you plan, no plan goes (according) to plan,” he stated, referencing Proverbs 16:9, which reads, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Wyatt, who was homeschooled in association with TEACH and the Bethany Grace Co-op, graduated in the spring. He hopes to attend Geneva College in Beaver Falls in January to major in cybersecurity. In the meantime, Wyatt is studying for his pilot’s license by taking lessons at Smoketown Airport, in hopes of eventually working as a commercial pilot. He notes that he is getting closer to completing his license requirements, but that a lot of his final testing is weather dependent. Wyatt is also a member of Civil Air Patrol Squadron 811, Reading.

Wyatt was also a member of Venture Crew 52 of Smoketown. He completed his Eagle Scout board of review on May 19, 2020, and he was the first in his troop to do so virtually. He removed an old playground set from the grounds and replaced it with a Ninja Warrior playset, chosen by church leaders. Children Can Shop With A Cop For Christmas should plan to pickup their children around noon. Osborne said she was excited to announce the return of SWAC. She noted that the program strives to positively impact children ages 6 to 18 in Lancaster County who have had police contact or been victims of unfortunate circumstances. The purpose of the program is not based solely on financial need, but also on the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths.

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

“I’m really looking forward to enjoying it and interacting with the kids this year and go all out,” said Osborne. “My volunteers loved it last year. Before I reached out to them this year, they asked, ‘When are you doing Shop With a Cop again?’” Last year, about 16 children participated in SWAC. Osborne hopes to double that number this year. Nominations from pastors, school counselors, and other members of the community for children living in Lan-

Five years ago, the Middletown Police Department in Langhorne, Pennsylvania started the Shop With a Cop (SWAC) program with the mission of brightening the holiday season for children and families in need. Since its inception, the program has been implemented by other agencies in Pennsylvania. Among them is Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster, which is located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Troop J - Lancaster covers 19 townships and two boroughs in the county. Officers are also stationed full time at Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts. Troop J - Lancaster’s second annual SWAC event will take place at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 4. Children should arrive at the fire station by 9:30 a.m. They will then be paired with a law enforcement officer and receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s. Children and officers will be bused to the Kohl’s Lincoln Highway East location, where they will shop for Christmas presents for children’s family members. Then, everyone will return to the fire station to eat a bagged lunch and wrap the presents. SWAC is sponsored by Camp Cadet of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that provides youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. To raise funds for SWAC, people can sponsor a child for a set amount, and sponsors and will receive a yard sign. Those interested can email Osborne at kosbornefi@pa.gov. Bridge of Hope Lancaster recently announced that Audrey Metzler has accepted the new position of director of church engagement and Talita Hall has been named program director. Bridge of Hope Lancaster works to end family homelessness for single mothers and their children through a comprehensive program of professional case management and informal social supports, called Neighboring. Neighboring volunteers from local Christian churches seek to be a source of healing and hope by providing tangible support and networking and by offering encouragement. Families receiving Bridge of Hope services work with professional case management staff to achieve safe and sustainable housing, financial stability, and whole family strength and resiliency. Bridge of Hope Lancaster was also recently awarded the 2021 Achievement Award at the annual Bridge of Hope Conference. The Achievement Award was presented to the Lancaster organization for attaining 120% growth this past year in the number of families served and connected with Neighboring volunteers. The goal for the coming fiscal year is to serve more than 20 families. Bridge of Hope Lancaster plans to hire an additional case manager by 2022 to meet the needs of the community and end homelessness for more families. The organization is a part of the national Bridge of Hope Network of 26 locations across 13 states.
