New Holland Plans Old-Fashioned Christmas By Ann Mead Ash

In the 12 years that the New Holland Business Association has been holding Christmas on Main, the event has grown to encompass a variety of activities and offerings including food, live music, face painting, and a visit from Santa, along with the lighting of the community Christmas tree. This year, organizer Ed Dougherty, who works with event chairs Judy Bills and Kelly Good, said that participating businesses will sport two American flags in front of their location in honor of Pearl Harbor Day, which is Saturday, Dec. 7, the day of Christmas on Main. Parts of Main Street and Roberts Avenue will be closed from 1 to 6 p.m. The fun will kick off with a children’s breakfast at St. Stephen

A holiday market, visit from Santa, festive food items, entertainment, and the lighting of the community Christmas tree will all be part of the annual Christmas on Main event scheduled for Dec. 7 in downtown New Holland. Reformed Church, 249 E. Main St., beginning at 8 a.m. At 10 a.m., the indoor Christmas Market in the Farmers Fair building at the corner of South Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street will open.

In addition to vendors selling a variety of gift items, Mrs. Santa will read to children at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Outside on South Roberts Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., food vendors will sell ham sandwiches, hot dogs,

soup, chili, grilled items, french fries, and monkey bread. On North Roberts Avenue, a car show will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) will display fire trucks in the area from 4 to 6 p.m. See Christmas On Main pg 2

In 2018, members of the Terre Hill Days committee organized the first Terre Hill Christmas in the Park event with the goal of creating a holiday gathering spot for ELANCO-area neighbors. The park was decorated, and a walking trail with a live Nativity was a main attraction. According to John Styer, one of the organizers, the inaugural outing was a success. “We had a great first year - we had nearly 1,500 people

walk through the trail,” said Styer. This year’s Christmas in the Park will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 6, 7, and 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. New this year will be a Santa’s Workshop event with free crafts for children age 10 and under at the Terre Hill Community See Christmas In The Park pg 4

Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill. Each night will feature a different craft sponsored by a local organization. Central to the event will be the decorated walking trail and Nativity. Styer said that the committee has added several new lighted decorations for this year. “We’ve been working since July creating new displays,” reported Styer. “About 25 new displays will be added this year in addition to what was made for last year.” Admission to the trail will be by suggested donation, and children ages 4 to 12 will receive a discount. Children age 3 and under will be admitted free. The admission will be good for one entire evening. Because the trail covers approximately one quarter mile of walking distance, transportation via a golf cart will be available to those who require assistance. In addition to the lighted trail, children may enjoy a holiday train ride through the park for a suggested donation. The train will travel through the forest, over a bridge, and even to the Terre Hill North Pole. Families may also want to enjoy a horsedrawn carriage ride through town for a fee. No Christmas event would be complete without a visit from Santa, who will be located in his house in Christmas Village from 6 to 9 p.m. Christmas Village will be populated by sellers of handmade holiday-themed items. In addition, toy trains, face painting, and mini golf will be offered. The village, which is the gateway to the lighted walking trail, will also feature Christmas music,

The Christmas Market fundraiser began a few years ago when Dissinger set a goal of giving back to the community. This year, she has chosen New Holland Boy Scout Troop 48 as the beneficiary of the event. “Proceeds will benefit Boy Scout Troop 48 in their mission to secure an AED machine. The AED will travel with them as they camp, increasing the chances of survival if a situation would present itself,” explained troop Scoutmaster Charles Ulrich. Dissinger first learned of the Scouts’ mission when Wessel asked Ulrich if the troop had any needs. Dissinger and Wessel have lined up vendors selling unique items to fill the quaint underground space for the day. Among those will be vendors selling jewelry, fresh flower arrangements, hand-dyed yarns,

in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1 . Shop at small businesses regularly. 2 . Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5 . Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas. Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. ABC Keystone Recognizes Contractors The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and each handbell musician will ring two natural bells in a three-octave range. Ringers must supply their own bells and floor music stand. There is a registration fee. There is no admission charged to hear the bells play, but nonperishable food items and monetary donations will be received at the event and donated to Autumn’s Food Pantry at the Emerald Foundation. Ringers interested in ringing handbells may contact Jeff Clouser at centralpahandbellfestival@gmail. com by Sunday, Dec. 1.

Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff ’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category:

Miscellaneous/Special Projects); Keystruct Construction Inc., York - Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Elevator Addition, Hummelstown (Category: Institutional Under $2 Million); Kinsley Construction Inc., York - York Traditions Bank Tenant Fit-out, York (Category: Commercial Under $2 Million); Mowery PSL, Mechanicsburg - Westminster Place II at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg (Category: Residential New MultiUnit); Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - CityGate Medical Office Building and Corporate Center, Lancaster (Category: Commercial $10-$25 Million); and Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - Amtrak Harrisburg Station - Baggage Bridge Removal, Harrisburg (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects). The gala was attended by more than 350 contractors, project owners, design professionals, and guests, including Sen. Ryan Aument, who presented the

chapter with a 60th anniversary resolution. This year’s program featured 82 entries, judged using specific criteria regarding the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of construction design professionals. The Excellence Award, the top honor, was given to the highest scoring project in each category, providing it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, was given to all other projects within each category that scored 80 or more points. The Excellence Award winners at the Keystone Chapter level are now eligible to enter at the national level and compete against the best in the industry from all 69 ABC chapters nationwide. A list of all of the Excellence Award and Merit Award winners is available at https://abckeystone.org/abc-key stone-awards-top-contractors-for -excellence-in-construction-at -2019-eic-gala/.

The Lancaster-Lebanon Pupil Transportation Association (LLPTA) has announced the results of the 44th annual School Bus Roade-o, which was held at Cocalico High School on Oct. 19. Competing in the event were 31 school bus drivers from Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The competition includes a written exam, which is followed by a skills competition where competitors are scored as they negotiate a 10-station obstacle course while behind the wheel of a school bus. The grand champion was Michael Webster of Cornwall Lebanon School District/Brightbill Transporation. Second place went to Angie Martin of Pequea Valley School District/Brightbill Transportation, and third place went to Diane Pinney of Conestoga Valley School District/Brightbill Transportation. Dania Clifford of Eastern Lancaster County School District/Brightbill Transportation placed fourth, and Shawn Stickler of Eastern Lebanon County School District/Brightbill Transportation placed fifth. The LLPTA Road-e-o is designed to promote and encourage school bus safety among school bus drivers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The event determines the local representatives at the state safety competition, which will be held in State College in June 2020.

“Through the Door,” an exhibit from local artist Gail Whatmore, will be on display in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of December. The public is invited to meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours on weekdays. Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her family’s home. Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts. The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season. Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene. For more information, readers may call Mulberry Art Studios at 717-295-1949.

East Cocalico Church of the Brethren, 4 Bunker Hill Road, Reamstown, recently installed an elevator. The church was planted by Ephrata Church of the Brethren in March 1991. The building was purchased from another congregation that had closed. Over the years, the members of the congregation worked to improve the building as they could. When the need for an elevator was first recognized approximately 25 years ago, the church started an elevator fund. Other expenses, concerns, and repairs also delayed the elevator’s installation. At the end of 22 years, $23,000 had been raised toward the project.

Chipped Ground Beef Steak Turkey

In the fall of 2017, the congregation started seriously considering getting an elevator. The church worked with a contractor for nine months to identify needs and develop the specifics of the project. During the summer of 2018, the congregation decided to move ahead with the project. Most of the total price of the project has been raised without drawing from emergency savings. The congregation voted to proceed with the project on Oct. 14, 2018. The elevator and other renovations were scheduled to be dedicated on Nov. 3. Food Banks Receive Donated Turkeys Giant Food Stores donated 7,000 turkeys to 13 partner food banks located in communities served by the company. An annual tradition, the 2019 turkey donation took place on Nov. 5 in advance of the holiday season to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for those in need. The following food banks received turkeys: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (Verona, Va.), Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester

County Food Bank, Family & Community Services of Delaware County, Helping Harvest (Reading), Lancaster County Food Hub, Manna on Main Street (Lansdale), Maryland Food Bank Western Branch (Hagerstown, Md.), Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank (Nazareth), State College Food Bank, United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Scranton),

and York County Food Bank. In addition to the turkey donation, Giant and Martin’s team members spent the day volunteering by organizing and restocking shelves to help partner food banks in advance of the busy holiday season. Giant and Martin’s also gave customers the opportunity to donate their free turkey certificate to a food bank.
