According to John Styer, offering variety at the Terre Hill Christmas in the Park is a yearly endeavor for those who organize the event. “We switch up the lights on the trail every year,” said Styer. “(Each event), we have different scenes with more lights and new, fun themes, and this year there will be a surprise.”

The 2022 Christmas in the Park will be held on Friday, Dec. 2; Saturday, Dec. 3; and Sunday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. each day in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill.

Styer noted that a live Nativity, staffed by members of local churches and other organizations, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each night. A golf cart will be available to transport people who need assistance.

Gingerbread cookie decorating for a small cost, free children’s crafts, and visits with Santa will take place in the community center on Main Street.

Admission to the event is free, but there are nominal charges to take part in some activities,

including the lighted trail and carriage rides. Other outdoor happenings designed to delight people of all ages will include mini golf and fire pits each night, along with live ice carving on Dec. 2 and 3.

“We have different entertainment each night,” noted Styer, who added that outdoor live music will be featured on the main stage next to the pavilion as well as in Christmas Village. On Dec. 2, the band

called 3:16 will play. On Dec. 3, a band dubbed 3 Below will perform, and on Dec. 4, the Erich Cawalla Trio will play. Christmas Village bands will be the Happy Wanderers, a German-style musical trio, on Dec. 2; Holiday Horns on Dec. 3; and the New Holland Brass Band on Dec. 4.

Food items that have been traditionally available for purchase at the event include soups, sandwiches,

desserts, funnel cakes, pulled pork nachos, and french fries. Foods that are new this year will be tacos and quesadillas. Foods featured in Christmas Village will include specialty flavored hot chocolates, along with waffles on a stick in multiple holiday flavors.

Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to pick up a map with a list of homes participating in the Terre Hill Christmas decorating

competition. Styer said visitors will receive a link to vote for their favorite houses. The contest will run from Friday, Dec. 2, through Friday, Dec. 9, after which winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded.

He added that times for some activities may vary and recommended that those who plan to attend check https://terrehilldays.com/christmas -in-the-park for specific information.

Behind the creativity in presenting the 2022 Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, is an enduring goal to keep the tale fresh, while acknowledging its unwavering truth. “It’s the Christmas story,”

See Woodcrest pg 2

Balancing the familiar with the contemporary is a tightrope that Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, walks each year as Christmas approaches. “Old harmonization worked in a different time, but in this age when things are fast moving, people want to hear recognizable tunes in new suits of clothes,” said Laudermilch, who dresses “stable and recognizable” holiday musical fare in brighter and livelier colors.

said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”

One aim of the event is to make the experience more real for attendees. “Audiences understand what the characters are going through,” said Fox. “That’s what we want to help bring to life.”

Now in its 12th year, Journey to Bethlehem gives participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Journey will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate water-

resistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.

The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable along with the shepherds, where they will all meet Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. “Together they are in awe of

how biblical prophecy foretold this event,” explained Fox. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men.

Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2021 event. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a special price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household.

Reservations may be made at www.woodcrestretreat.org /events/journey. Readers who have questions may call 717738-2233.

All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,900 children each year. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there

will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle

Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata

Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

A Christmas concert titled “Behold Him” will be presented by One A-Chord Community Choir. Concerts will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at Reamstown Church of God, 400 Pfautz Hill Road, Stevens, and at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, 419 Pierson Road, Lititz.

Marking The Season With Gifts That Give Hope

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year, the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally

friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site. Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There

have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.

Several new organizations taking part in the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Fair include (from left) Big Picture Soccer, represented by Josiah Groff; Live Like Libby, represented by David Miller and Brooke Carlock; and Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, represented by Sue Heilman; who all worked with GTGH founder Jenn Knepper.

Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.

When dancer Libby Shannon Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a car accident in February, her parents,

Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory. “(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”

David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligible students as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.

Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

Lions Club To Sell Hot Ham Sandwiches

The New Holland Lions Club will man its ham stand at New Holland’s Christmas on Main on Saturday, Dec. 3.

The club will sell its hot ham sandwiches, soup, hot dogs,

and drinks on South Roberts Avenue in New Holland from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a fundraiser for the community.

In addition, the club is seeking new members. For more information on the club or the ham stand, contact James Bronson at 717-3550230 or view the New Holland Lions Club’s Facebook page.

WVA Plans Road Closure

As part of the Weaverland Valley Authority (WVA) Wastewater Treatment Facility and Collection/Conveyance Construction Project, the WVA contractor, HRI Inc., will begin probing for rock along state Route 625 in East Earl Township and then, ultimately, excavating and installing new sanitary sewer

facilities for the new collection/conveyance system. HRI anticipates that Route 625 will be closed and a detour will be in place from Monday, Dec. 5, to approximately Saturday, April 1, 2023.

The road will be closed between Main Street and Union Grove Road, and community members should

expect traffic to be affected along Main Street, Weaverland Valley Road (Route 897) and Union Grove Road. The property and business owners and the businesses’ customers will have access to the properties affected by the road closure.

For more details, call Becker Engineering at 717-2954975, ext. 112.

The New Holland Lions Club will sell hot ham sandwiches and more during Christmas on Main.

This year, the 11th annual New Holland Band Holiday Pops concert will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, in the Palm Court of the Double-Tree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The event is known for featuring a meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the season. “We want to give family and friends a chance to converse around the table at this cordial time of year,” noted Laudermilch.

As it has a few times before, the event will kick off with trumpets from the balcony announcing the start of John Wasson’s “Festival Fanfare for Christmas.” “If I don’t have (the trumpets), people ask where (they are),” explained Laudermilch, who said this will be the fourth time the trumpets lead the event. “It’s really a great opening,” he added.

The opening will be followed by lighter music, including pieces such as “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and possibly the well-known Carpenters classic “Merry Christmas, Darling.” “It’s such a pretty tune, and everyone knows it,” said Laudermilch.

For the first time, the Lancaster Bible College Chorale, under the direction of Robert Bigley, will join the band for a few numbers. The chorale will sing two songs accompanied

by the band and a third song will be performed a capella.

Additional Christmas favorites will include music from the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” “The Bells of Christmas,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” and “A Winter’s Night,” based on the

quintessential carol “Silent Night,” in a new setting.

The event includes dinner for individuals and tables of eight and 10. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may do so at www.new hollandband.org or by calling 717-355-5096.

Creative Works To Stage Sock Puppet Show

Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.

On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.

“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard

boats as five actor-puppeteers wield a cast of more than 30 custom-designed, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.

Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to

reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience was worth after the performance.

Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com. Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.

Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Learn more about Creative Works at www.creativelancaster.org.
