A New Holland Tradition n a year of change and uncertainty, organizers of New Holland’s 13th Christmas on Main event are determined to celebrate the holidays in a safe manner. “We want to keep the event alive for this year and come back bigger next year, said Trevor Reed, president of the New Holland Business Association (NHBA), which coordinates the event. Reed explained that the organization will put an emphasis on outdoor activities in the downtown area when Christmas on Main is held on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. until after 6 p.m. North and South Roberts Avenue will be closed during that time. Main Street will not be closed. Fire police will be

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. with the opening of the outdoor Christmas Market, located in the parking lot of the New Holland Ambulance building, 101 E. Franklin St. Organizers have lined up local vendors selling a variety of items, including gifts, Christmas decorations, and food created with holiday entertaining in mind. The market will be open until 2 p.m. New for this year, NHBA members will hold a Christmas decorating contest for businesses located on Main Street between Custer and Brimmer avenues. Nonprofit organizations that will participate will include Boy Scout Troop 48, and Cub Scout Pack 48. Free parking, outdoor vendors, and the annual Christmas tree lighting will all be part of the 13th Christmas on Main event on Dec. 5.
When Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West and development director Sarah Yohe realized the caliber of some of the local organization’s volunteers last spring, they each wrote letters nominating some of them for the national Remarkable Volunteer Award given by GOTR International. The nonprofit, which promotes good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls, chooses 36 winners from hundreds of entries. In August, West and Yohe heard that some of their nominees were among the winners. Rahwa Teklai, who lives in Manheim Township, was nominated by Yohe and was chosen as a fundraising winner for her work as a SoleMate. Four Paradise Elementary School coaches Falon Doutrich, Brooke Sexton, Kristen Rogers, and Val Ruhl were chosen as winners in the coaching category.

Servant Stage is offering three original Christmas shows in a virtual setting this December, featuring musical arrangements of classic Christmas songs and performances from more than 100 local Lancaster performers. Continuing the weekly Living Room Concert Series that Servant Stage started in April, these three shows will take place every Friday night at 7 p.m. leading up to Christmas. “Jingle Bell Jukebox” on Dec. 4 will feature a five-piece band led by pianist Scott Williams and performances from more than 60 local teens. “Home for Christmas” on Dec. 11 will include original vocal arrangements of many traditional carols and will feature more than 50 Servant Stage performers. “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 18 is a theatrical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. It is a fantastical journey through Christmas past, present, and future in a timeless holiday tale of redemption, charity, and the spirit of Christmas. There is no charge, and the performances can be viewed by searching for “Servant Stage” on YouTube
or Facebook or by visiting www.servantstage.org. Concerts will also be available to watch later. More information and a list of performers can be found at the aforementioned website. Servant Stage’s weekly online concerts have received more than 240,000 views since April. Servant Stage Company is a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County with a pay-what-you-will business model since 2011 and bringing entertainment to more than Servant Stage will present three virtual 50,000 audience members each year. performances in December.

and families will be seated together. According to Fox, during the 2019 Journey to Bethlehem, the organization set a Saturday night attendance record. More than 19,000 people have attended over the nine years the event has been held, and organizers hope to hit 20,000 this year. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Readers who have questions may call 717-738-2233. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.

summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat, noted that the final stop, which in past years included a movie, will now be a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. “In the final scene, the wise men … have just discovered a sign in the stars,” explained Fox. “They will debate ... whether they should risk a long dangerous journey of many months through the desert to see this king. In the end, they decide it’s worth it because the king is worth it.” To stay within COVID-19 limitations for buildings, organizers ask that those who wish to attend register for a particular time slot by visiting www.woodcrestretreat.org. A link on the main page can be used to register. Walk-ins will be accepted as well, but they may have to wait longer to start the journey. Instead of a wagon ride to the first scene, school buses will be utilized,

Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. The 10th annual event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. Adam Fox,

Gripping, true story. Vulnerably shared. A mother faces grief but also is surprised to find joy when her first two children are born with severe disabilities. In circumstances that usually shatter a family, this husband and wife overcome. Walk with them, cry with them, and celebrate their growth in faith.

The third celebration of Terre Hill’s Christmas in the Park will be held Friday, Dec. 4; Saturday, Dec. 5; and Sunday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. each evening in the park located at 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill. John Styer and his helpers have been working since October to prepare the lighted trail and other displays for the event. “We have tens of thousands of lights, said Styer, who noted that new scenes and displays have been created especially for the 2020 trail. “We moved things around, and we have new lighting, so those who came before can expect something different, said Styer. Admission to the event is free, but the lighted trail, which offers a live Nativity from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each evening, will be by suggested donation. A golf cart will be available to help those with mobility issues enjoy the lighted scenes. Other outdoor
activities designed to delight people of all ages will include live ice carving on Dec. 4 and 5, mini golf, and fire pits for making s’mores. Styer noted that a number of holiday craft vendors will be attending, and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank will have a display. “(Activities) will be spread out throughout the park, said Styer. Outdoor entertainment will include a different musical group each night on the Terre Hill Park stage. On Dec. 4, Left Field will play. On Dec. 5, the group Echo North will take the stage, and on Dec. 6, The Martin Sisters Band will be featured. “We will still have several indoor activities, noted Styer. “We will offer several crafts, which are free. Some indoor activities will be held at Vibrant Church, which is adjacent to the park. The number of people inside a building will be limited, and masks will be required to enter certain areas, such as the craft and vendor areas.

Angie Jakubowski became the women’s ministry director at The Potter’s House of Ruth Addiction Recovery and Discipleship Ministry in March.
R063246
Angie Jakubowski, women’s ministry director with The Potter’s House of Ruth Addiction Recovery and Discipleship Ministry, is comfortable talking about her background - her childhood in Wormleysburg, her degrees from Elizabethtown College, and the intervention organizations she founded - but Angie’s face lights up when she is asked about the ministry she began leading in March. “We can house seven students, and we accepted our first student in July,” said Angie. “We are a four-phase program, and everything is Christ-centered and biblically based,” she added, noting that the first two phases are structured and focused on recovery, including biblical 12-step meetings and curriculum.
Angie holds a bachelors degree in addictions and behavioral counseling and a master’s degree in strategic leadership. She has served as a family interventionist with Restorative Interventions, which she founded in New Cumberland. She was also a mobile crisis counselor for Schuylkill County and with Lebanon Youth Advocacy, and she worked for Teen Challenge. Prior to 2020, Angie and her husband, Joel, who is the men’s ministry director for The Potter’s House, participated with the ministry. In late 2019, Angie was asked to prayerfully consider whether she was being called to work for the program. In early 2020, she accepted the position. Angie noted that during phase two of the program, an

opportunity to earn a GED is offered and students are able to work. “In phase four, students begin to create their own community support network, and ... prepare to transition to whatever is next.” A case manager works with students to develop an individualized goal plan that covers all domains of their lives. Angie noted that the case manager and students create action steps, which are monitored throughout the process. Life skills, such as cooking and cleaning are also taught. “Our students are required to go to off-site counseling weekly,” said Angie. A weekly group therapy session is also required. “When they leave, we want them to have a strong foundation in the Lord, employment, a savings account, a Christ-centered support network, and we want them to be plugged in to the community and be an effective member of society,” Angie noted. Because no student is turned away based on
inability to pay, students are expected to give back to the ministry to help cover their fees or help someone else who does not have the ability to pay. “They must give at least 10 hours on arts or crafts in whatever their giftings are,” explained Angie, displaying intricately crocheted baby items and sewing projects along with artwork. Angie said the students have come from the Lancaster County Prison and from selfreferrals. The program is designed to be eight to 12 months in length, but each student’s course is individually determined. Already, she is looking toward providing another phase for graduates. “We would love to see a second location where there could be long-term supervised housing opportunities available to these ladies for when they graduate,” she said. “A place that’s safe.” Readers who would like to know more may visit https://thepottershouse lancaster.com.

The Department of Labor and Industry launched a redesigned PA CareerLink website with the goal of making it easier for Pennsylvania workers, employers, and workforce development groups to connect to vital job search and career development tools. The redesigned PA CareerLink website focuses on accessibility and features an enhanced candidate sourcing and application process, which will simplify the hiring process for job seekers and employers alike. The website also makes other key resources more easily accessible, including links to the search pages for trainings, apprenticeships, and internships, as well as adult education resources; the Employment, Advancement and Retention Network (EARN); and benefits through the online tool Compass. Readers are also reminded about the free services that PA CareerLink provides to help workers access job search and training assistance and to help employers find the skilled workers they need to succeed. Virtual PA CareerLink services have been provided continuously for job seekers and employers, including adult education classes, career counseling, and onthe-job training programs.
