Artisans Corner Opens At GSV BY ANN MEAD ASH

For years, Ruth Anne and Dave Starnes and Judy and Alan Dinning, couples that are residents of Garden Spot Village (GSV), talked about establishing a place where the artists of GSV could sell their creations. In the spring of this year, the couples heard that the area off the Village Square at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, which had been occupied by Fulton Bank, would be available. “We decided the timing was right,” said Ruth Anne. “We had to put it in writing (because) people coveted this spot.” In June, the four wrote a proposal. In July, they received a positive response, and on Nov. 4, Artisans Corner opened. A selection committee decides which items may be offered in the juried shop. All items for sale are handmade by residents of GSV. While Gordon Lash tended the cash register a few days after the shop opened, Ruth Anne showed off the tiny treasure boxes Gordon creates.

She gladly pointed out Annie McAbee’s soft goods, including knitted pieces, and Hershey Hostetter’s tiny animals, including a hedgehog. “This is Lloyd Ziegler’s work. They are spoon and fork art,” said Ruth Anne of the unusual metal creations. The new shop also sells cutting boards in a variety of shapes and sizes, turned bowls, and a cornhole game. Sewn items include table runners and special clothing items for adults. Dave and Ruth Anne’s photography adorns the cards they make, and Sally Mittelstadt’s unique cork purses are attractively displayed. Other items include watercolors by Junior Zook, and stained glass items by Bonnie Lord, which are attractively arranged on the glass door in front of the vault to show off their bright colors. Quilts created by Sally Rapp and by the Garden Spot Village Quilters are also available for purchase. Working her way around the shop, Ruth Anne pointed out cat beds, tatting, paintings, pottery,

Girls On The Run Goes Live! BY ANN MEAD ASH

Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.” Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster

Trinity Quilters Have Been Stitching Together Since 2004 BY ANN MEAD ASH

It began when Barbara Caruana was assistant pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, in 2003. “She wanted quilts to give to those she visited who were ill,” recalled Karin Freimuth, who said that three quilters worked together to create the quilts Caruana requested. From that humble beginning, a group of about 15 quilters has now sent nearly 1,500 quilts through Lutheran World Relief to places as far away as Angola, Honduras, Pakistan, and Peru. County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will be needed to help make that happen. “We are really looking for the support of the community and for coaches to get involved (because) the need will be greater than ever to serve more girls this spring,” said West. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches

receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the program because they see GOTR lessons lived out in their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in

Freimuth chooses the colors for the quilt tops from the many patterns in her room full of donated fabrics. The group accepts donations of cotton-weight fabric, and Freimuth visits a fabric outlet for backing material. “We tie quilts,” she explained. Freimuth creates the layout and pattern for a quilt for other group members to sew at home. When the group meets, members put the front and batting together, and another group member uses a sewing machine located at the church to sew the binding. Freimuth estimates it takes about 10 hours to complete a quilt. In 2014, the group made 135 quilts. In comparison, for 2020, after not meeting due to COVID-19 restrictions, the group completed 43 quilts. In addition to Freimuth, members of the group who worked on those quilts were Kathy Ashcroft, Ralph Bitler, Jean Brown, Martha Cressman, Brenda Dagan, Andrea Dukeman, Peg Friday, Carol Hagan, Doris Hunsberger, Kathy Lindman, Nancy Middlekauff, Jean Tressler, Sharon Shaeffer, Elaine Wright, and Theona Waxbom. In 2018, four members of the quilters visited the Cover Girls, a quilting group associated with Bay

and handwoven dish cloths. “These are detailed collages made from cut-up magazines,” she noted, referencing another craft. Ruth Anne stopped at some brightly colored hats and noted that she makes those. She also point-

Shore Lutheran Church, located in Whitefish Bay, Wis. Several years before, the Cover Girls had been trying to revitalize their quilting group, and when they found a photo on the internet of the Trinity quilts displayed in the church, they noticed a similarity in the churches and used the photo to promote their group. They sent the Trinity Quilters a copy with a note in 2016, and a friendship was born. Freimuth reported that during the 2018 visit, the Trinity group enjoyed a luncheon and a show-and-tell of Bay Shore quilts. The two groups also discussed production methods. Because each box of quilts is barcoded, the group knows where the quilts have been shipped. “We know our quilts were in Beirut, Lebanon, when the port blew up (in August 2020),” said Freimuth, who noted that the group thought the quilts were lost. Instead, 25,000 quilts were found in the one concrete building left standing. “Our quilts were immediately used,” said Freimuth. More information about the work of Lutheran World Relief may be found at https://lwr.org. Information about Trinity Lutheran is available at www.trinitynewholland.org.

ABC Keystone Awards Top Contractors For Excellence

Rough And Tumble BY ANN MEAD ASH

When giving a tour of the Rough & Tumble Museum, 4997 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, museum volunteer Kathleen Hazzard points out the buildings that represent the many organizations that make up the group. “That’s the horse-drawn museum. That building is antique cars, and that’s the blacksmith shop,” she notes, but then she pauses to explain how strongly she believes in the message of the organization. “We are preserving America’s agricultural and industrial history because it’s really important to remember where we came from as we go forward,” Hazzard said. Not only is the Rough & Tumble Museum, which covers 33 acres along Route 30 near Paradise, working to preserve history, but it is also working to correct misinformation about the group itself. “People don’t know we’re open to the public,” explained Hazzard. “We are a membership-based, board of directors-run museum, but everyone is welcome.” Bud Burdy, current Rough & Tumble president, echoed Hazzard. “We continually learn that no one knows we exist and that we are open to the public,” said Burdy, who is hoping to bring STEM classes, Scout troops, school groups, and others to the museum. He noted that younger people are welcome to come and learn about the 12 or so diverse groups, which include a machine shop and a large engine group, that fall under the museum’s

umbrella. “It’s not just an allboys’ club,” Burdy pointed out. “We have more and more ladies involved.” Rough & Tumble traces its roots to the 1940s, when Arthur Young, who owned a tractor business across the road from the museum’s location, organized a reunion, eventually buying the Myer Farm, which became Rough & Tumble. The organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. A full slate is planned for 2022. On Saturday, April 23, the Antique and Classic Tractor Pull will be held. No admission will be charged, and gates will open at 8 a.m. “Our pulling committee has made some dramatic positive changes in the last five years,” said Hazzard of the kickoff event. The Spring Steam-Up will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13, and 14, with a tractor pull at 6 p.m. on May 13, and demonstrations of plowing with vintage equipment. “People love to come and watch us plow the fields

with antique tractors and steam tractors,” said Hazzard. On Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, the International Harvester Club Chapter 9 will hold an event on the museum grounds, and Rough & Tumble will hold a tractor pull the same weekend. During John Deere Days, Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23, the Waterloo Boys turn the scenery special shades of green and yellow, with a Parade of Power and more. The 74th annual Threshermen’s Reunion will be held Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 17 to 20. The event features a daily Parade of Power and the Pageant of Threshing. The final event of the year is the Time of Harvest Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8. the child-focused event includes pumpkin painting, a children’s pedal pull, and a candy drop from a tall crane. Information about the organization may be found by visiting www.roughandtumble.org or calling 717-442-4249.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms at the 32nd annual ABC Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards Gala held Nov. 3 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. This event highlights the top regional projects built by ABC Keystone contractor members throughout the past year. The highest award of the evening went to the Project of the Year (POY) recipient. The criteria to receive the POY Eagle award were its subjective wow factor in the following areas: community impact, client satisfaction, design fea-

tures and positive notoriety or high-profile of the project. The 2021 POY was awarded to Poole Anderson Construction LLC for its nearly 33,000-square-foot Franklin & Marshall Winter Visual Arts Center project in Lancaster, submitted in the Institutional $10 to $25 Million category. Poole Anderson Construction was the construction manager for the project. The unique design included a suspended structure with cantilevered trusses, channel and structural glass systems and a recycled glass aggregate envelope. This year, the Project of the

Year Award finalists included the following: Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., Brownstown, for the Upper Moreland Community Center Renovation in Hatboro, Category - Commercial $2 - $10 Million; Keystruct Construction, A Viocity Company, for the Veterans Affairs York Clinic Renovations in York, Category - Medical Renovation $1 - $5 Million; Paramount Contracting Inc., 101 North Queen Condos in Lancaster, Category - Interior Finishes Under $150,000; Poole Anderson Construction Winter Visual Arts Center, Lancaster, Category - Institutional See ABC pg 16
