Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could

squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. “Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “We want to connect See Ease The Burden pg 4

Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribboncutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. Donors who contributed to the project and attended the ribboncutting event included Sally Buckwalter, Mark Simeral, and Rick and Nancy Price. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 14, Schreiber Center president James DeBord thanked supporters who made possible the new portico, a project that sets up the next major construction plan for Schreiber: a three-story, $6 million expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space.

Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) has launched the E. Ann Klein Trade, Occupational, and Technical Education Loan Program, also known as TOTE Loan Program. The new TOTE Loan Program provides interest-free loans to Lancaster County residents who have earned a high school diploma or GED and are planning to attend an eligible trade, occupational, or technical program. Students are eligible to receive one loan totaling up to $3,400 to aid in their tuition expenses. “Along with federal student aid, that gets them a little bit closer (to covering See Loan Program pg 2

reality is that tuition may run as high as $20,000. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “ We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan program, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in time for new sessions at the LCCTC. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan. Borrowers will also need co-signers for the loans, and repayment will begin six months after the recipient graduates or leaves school. Individuals who are interested in learning more and applying can do so at https://lancdollars.org/tote-loan. money from private sources. The work was completed in August. The project sets the stage for Schreiber’s next major construction project: a $6 million, three-story expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space to the current facility. “These are exciting times at Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “We are seeing more kids come through our doors every day, and thanks to many generous people in our community, we have been able to make some modifications to the center to try and keep up with the demand. But we are literally out of space. We need to expand, and we’re confident the community will rally behind us again so that we have the space we need to serve every family that needs us.” The project will create space and convert current administrative offices into new areas for therapy. The new construction will feature an expanded physical therapy department that will include a treatment suite with state-of-the-art concussion protocol and traumatic brain injury therapies. A new eco-friendly therapy garden will be built next to the expanded building. Schreiber is in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal approvals to begin construction. A capital campaign is expected to begin in 2020. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is a nonprofit organization that strives to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The emphasis is on grassroots … local,” said Herr. “Any donations to Ease the Burden stay here in Lancaster County.” Lapp added that the trio will be working to raise funds. “There are lots of ways to fill the grain bin,” she said. “It’s about relationships, but we hope to hold events, and we hope individuals will see the need and feel led to give,” she said, adding that ETB is already working with small businesses. ETB has a website that offers information about the mission and how the organization works, and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.ETBLancaster.org.

We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will

be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions

T

radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during he holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season. Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases. Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses. Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift

card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints. Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.

How To Cut Back On Holiday Waste

T

he holiday season is a joyful time of year. But the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day also tend to be very wasteful. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that household waste increases by more than 25 percent during the holiday season. Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season.

Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind when holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for their loved ones, but giving reusable gifts can have a positive, long-term impact on the planet. Reusable coffee mugs, water bottles or straws can dramatically reduce waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for eco-friendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing. Shop local - and forgo shopping bags. Shipping products across the country can involve a large expenditure of gas and packaging waste. Shopping locally not only supports people in the community, it also makes it easy to use reusable bags or not use a bag at all. Several local communities also have a variety of shops in a concentrated area, so walking from store to store can also help reduce shoppers’ carbon footprint. Reuse holiday-specific items. Many people only use gift wrap, gift boxes and gift bags during the holiday season. Such items are oftentimes discarded after Christmas morning. But these items can be reused to cut back on holiday waste. Reusing wrapping paper from year to year can be especially beneficial to the environment. That’s because wrapping paper tends to be dyed or laminated, and many wrapping papers contain non-paper additives that cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints. Prepare less food and donate any leftovers.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience

â– Responses

Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online

and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.

â– Personalization

Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more unique products, including customized items.

Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can

explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. Improved customer service

Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.

reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response

hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small not only helps the local community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experience for you too. While small businesses may not have the marketing muscle to compete with large corporations, many small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.

Wrapping Gifts Is An Old Tradition

R050070

T

he holiday season is rife with tradition. One of the most recognizable traditions involves wrapping gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old, with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668. The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts. As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman founded the first gift wrap company in the United States in 1903. Unfortunately for gift givers back then, adhesive tape had not yet been invented, and wouldn’t be for another 27 years.

be at the Stoltzfus farm. While waiting, visitors will be treated to free light snacks and beverages. The Honey Brook Live Nativity was started by Honey Brook Community Church in 2003. After a break in 2018, the event has been revitalized by a new organizing committee consisting of representatives from various churches. “There are probably six or seven churches involved. Primarily, a large number of (committee members) are from Honey Brook Community Church,” explained committee member Leon Stoltzfus, noting that the committee has been planning the event since May. He pointed out that the group has launched a website about the event, www.honeybrooklivenativity.com, which also offers a way to make group reservations for the first time. The live Nativity will feature several scenes, all depicting the events that occurred prior to the birth of Christ, concluding with the manger scene. It will take approximately 40 minutes to walk through the scenes, which feature live animals and a cast of more than 100 characters, including children who portray shepherds and angels. Luminarias will light the pathways between the scenes. The first scene will feature Adam and Eve, who will speak about their sin and separation from God. They will also talk about the hope they have been given through the

Residents of the local community are invited to join Fairmount residents on Friday, Dec. 13, at 9:30 a.m. for a Safety Vest Frolic in the Crest View Gathering Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Kay L. Moyer, a safety nurse educator from the Cooperative Extension Service, will supply the materials to make vests and assemble kits to donate to local schoolchildren who walk or bike on back roads. Those would like to help cut pieces of fabric fastener or reflective tape for the vests or assemble the cut pieces into kits are invited to attend. Anyone not able to attend the frolic but interested in helping in their own home may call 717-394-6851. Due to increased demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are needed also to purchase additional materials for more vests. Parents or teachers of young students who may need vests are welcome to call the aforementioned number. Directions to Fairmount are available at www.Fairmount Homes.org.

Participants were encouraged to write messages or the names of loved ones on their sky lanterns before they released them.

promise of a Messiah. The next scene will feature Abraham reflecting on God’s command to leave his country to form a new nation through which God would send the Messiah. In the next scene, visitors will see the angel Gabriel receiving instructions from God to take an important message to a humble girl named Mary. Viewers will then observe Joseph in his carpenter’s shop, as he talks about his commitment to taking care of Mary, the mother of the Messiah. The tour will continue into the grand palace of Herod the Great, where viewers will hear how angry Herod is that a new king has been born. Then, the tour will move out to the shepherds in the field as they tend live sheep while rejoicing about the birth of the Savior. The tour will end when the innkeeper invites visitors into a rustic hay-filled barn where Mary and Joseph will then tell their story. The final tableau will also feature music by an angel choir. “(The live Nativity) really paints a great picture, and it describes the true meaning of Christmas,” said Stoltzfus. “It’s a great family experience.” He noted that the scene builders, who have been the constructing the sets since early November, and all the actors and singers, who have been rehearsing since mid-November, are volunteers. Volunteers are also installing the sound and lighting equipment. “One hundred percent of the cast (and others) donate their time,” said Stoltzfus. “It’s an awesome example of
