UPCOMING AUDITIONS
Servant Stage Company has announced that registration is now open for anyone interested in auditioning to perform in 2019. For more information and to register for an audition time, readers may visit www.servantstagecompany.com.
SINGING OPPORTUNITY
will hold auditions for the spring 2019 semester. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using one’s head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung, and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL includes more than 150 singers. The performing choirs involve singers in Carol Choir (grades two through five), Concert Choir (grades six through eight) and Chamber Choir (grades nine through 12). The choirs practice weekly on Tuesday evenings through early May, and they are led by artistic director Rosemary Blessing and director Sarah Wingard. Prospective singers should schedule a 15-minute audition time slot by contacting Wingard at 540-383-9986 or carolandconcertchoir@lancaster mennonite.org.
“You show up with a friend or come alone and make a friend,” said Kathi Markley, a member of the Lancaster Road Runners Club. Markley was referencing the annual free Christmas Eve Run the club has held for about two decades. Markley wants those considering taking part to know that they will have company along the route no matter what their pace. “There are faster people (and) middle-of-the-pack runners and people who meander slowly,” she said. “You don’t have to feel like you have to be an Olympic-caliber athlete (to take part).” Markley and other club members have planned this year’s run to begin with runners meeting near the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company, 33-35 N. Market St., Lancaster, adjacent
to Central Market, at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. The run will begin at 9 a.m. Runners need not be club members to join in the event. According to Markley, the run follows a course that is a modified version of the Red Rose Run. “(The Red Rose Run) normally starts in Binns Park area,” explained Markley, “but this starts near Central Market and loops through Lancaster County Park.” She noted that the course, which runs downhill on Duke Street, is about 4 miles in length. “There is a flat section through County Park, and if you’re running with a friend and chatting it goes by quickly,” she said. “Coming back there’s a change of climb.” Markley added that there is a group of members who often walk the course. Following the run, participants generally take some time to mingle by See Road Runners pg 8

The Peace Light was received at an arrival ceremony on Dec. 5 at the office of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, located at 630 Janet Ave., Suite B-114, Lancaster. The Peace Light will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 6 through Friday, Dec. 21, at the council office. Attendees are encouraged to bring an oil lamp or an enclosed candle to take it with them. For more than 1,000 years, a flame has been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel. As has been an annual tradition for the last 33 years, a Scout from Austria is chosen to light two blast-proof miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across Europe, and these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace. Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New
York City. Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that the Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light. The Peace Light is a physical
reminder of the reason for the Christmas season. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves nearly 5,500 youths in a variety of programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. For more information, readers may call 717553-4200 or visit www.peace light.org or www.padutchbsa.org.

Ruth Dunlap, resident of Thistledown, the Cooperative Living House at Garden Spot Village, accepted the 2018 LeadingAge Innovation Award on behalf of Garden Spot Communities at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia on Oct. 28. LeadingAge Awards Committee selected Garden Spot Communities as the recipient of the 2018 Innovation Award in September. According to Kathryn Roberts, board chair of LeadingAge and the awards committee, the award is given to recognize programs for their innovation and excellence. Garden Spot Communities was chosen for the award because its leadership team recognized the need for affordable housing for older adults on fixed incomes, explored different opportunities and concepts to develop a Cooperative Living House and partnered with the local community to build the home. Members of the New Holland and greater Lancaster community helped to build the home by donating funds and materials and volunteering. Garden Spot CEO Steve Lindsey believes that the Cooperative Living House is a
project that can be scalable for the future. Garden Spot Village welcomed the first residents to Thistledown in March.

According to www.messiahsing along.com, the full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on Christ’s suffering and death. The third part concludes with triumph over sin and death through the Resurrection. Leaman explained that at Christmastime, the Chester County singalong covers all of the first part, sections of the second part and excerpts of the third part of the score. A Lancaster County sing-along is also offered at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster during the Easter season. That program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. During the “Hallelujah” chorus, the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Both performances are open to anyone who wants to sing or listen. The timing of the events is designed not to interfere with Christmas and Easter schedules and to occur when professional musicians are less busy. At the event on Dec. 28, Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie will provide American Sign Language interpretation at Stevens’ suggestion. “The signers are really important,” said Leaman. “It started because Stevens came to one of the sing-alongs and she came up to me afterward (and mentioned having signers), and we have had signers ever since at both venues. “We may have people who can’t hear, (and also) others love it because it adds something,” Leaman added. Leaman encourages vocalists who wish to take part to practice using the “Learn and Practice Your Voice Part” link at www.messiahsingalong.com. Singers may rent or purchase music to use at the event. The event is free and open to the public. Early seating is advised. A freewill offering will be received to help finance the cost of the event. The concert is supported by local businesses, as well as the Huston Foundation, the Robert Carwithen Music Foundation, the J.S. Herr Foundation, the James M. and Lois B. Herr Family Foundation and the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.messiah singalong.com and www.facebook .com/messiah singalongs. by a professional 16-piece orchestra. The sing-along will also feature professional soloists, including Heidi Shannon, soprano; Heidi Kurtz, mezzo soprano; Timothy Bentch, tenor; and Mark Moliterno, bass. The guest conductor will be Marcella Hostetler, Campus Chorale director at Lancaster Mennonite School. Complete biographies and photos of the soloists can be found at www.messiah singalong.com/the-artists. The Chester County Christian Chorale was founded in 1976 by Clair Leaman, who wanted to provide local singers an opportunity to sing with a professional orchestra and soloists, who are hired prior to the performance. On the night of the sing-along, members of the community who would like to sing in the choir are asked to arrive at the church at 6:30 p.m. Attire is business casual. Singers will then be organized by voice part. Leaman noted that between 130 to 150 singers generally take part.

ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a nine-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.” Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),” noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here.” Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here,” said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends.” Chultz noted that those being served by local organizations such as The Gatehouse and Transition to Community/Potter’s House are invited to take part in the ALCATHON. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,” said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic and we invite the neighbors to socialize and see what we’re all about.” He noted that, which the exception of the ALCATHON, most club activities end by 9 or 10 p.m. According to Chultz, the 521 Club, which offers membership to anyone who has accumulated 30 days of continuous sobriety, serves as an important stepping stone for those facing the challenges of staying in recovery. “We provide a way for people in recovery to realize they can lead a normal life, have fun, be involved with people, and do things that don’t involve substance abuse,” he said. Readers who would like more information about the 521 Club may visit www.The521club.com or call 717-299-9397.

Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center in Lancaster during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) in support of the lives of those with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers in the Sears Mall of Park City Center every hour, every day during mall open hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to cover all available shifts; a shift is typically two to four hours. Individuals age 14 and older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. Church, community, civic, or school groups are welcome to sign up. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or lorispradling@hotmail.com. Proceeds from the gift wrapping project benefit UDSF, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides programs and services to help people with disabilities live more independent lives in the community. Funds raised are put to work in programs such as adult day programming, custom wheelchair seating, and UDS service dogs.
Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions and TLC Homelessness and Veterans to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. More information is available by calling 717-569-8521.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all levels, including backyard watchers, are invited to help collect data, which may be used to study bird population trends and migration patterns and to consider conservation policy. On Saturday, Dec. 15, Convert to Code will host the #HolidayHack2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Listrak headquarters, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. Students of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend to meet and learn from fellow coders and build together at the holiday-themed hackathon. Admission is free, and pizza will be provided for lunch. Registration is required, and interested individuals may sign up at http:// convert2code.com/#!/holidayhack. What exactly is a hackathon? Caleb Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems.” Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science,” said Weaver. Weaver and Martin, who both graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2017, began hosting free computer programming workshops for the community in 2017. The coding mentors and instructors at all of the Convert to Code workshops are all local software engineers and developers who volunteer their time. “To see some wild idea you have begin

to materialize and turn from an abstract idea into a concrete organization is honestly a blessing,” shared Weaver. “Being able to sit down and look at our numbers for our first year, we reached over 150 people in over 22 school districts throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, which, of course, is just huge.” Since Convert to Code has now hosted numerous workshops and established more connections throughout the local area, Weaver and Martin revisited the idea of hosting a hackathon this year. “We felt we had enough momentum as an organization to go through with it,” Weaver said. “I always liked the idea of a Christmas- or holidaythemed hackathon.” Individuals who are interested in

Focusing on how disconnection from others can eventually lead to dehumanization, the Derksens addressed human rights crises in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Syria. As the 550 students exited the auditorium after the last session, teachers stood at the doorways with bowls of chocolate truffles. Each student was handed a truffle and sent off with the statement “You are a gift.” Lancaster Mennonite School holds chapel services four times per week at its Lancaster Campus.

among those whose well-being EMM seeks to enhance. Students were encouraged to fill their smartphone voids by journaling about what they noticed. One student observed a woman sitting on a bench next to her making a scarf. The student was inspired to make a scarf as a result of stopping to notice the woman next to her. In her own way, not being on her phone helped her enter into creativity. Other students shared about how they had a greater sense of respect and appreciation for people around them as a result of disconnecting from their smartphones. A common observation among the students and staff members who took on the challenge was that they had more time due to not using their smartphones or social media accounts. The goal was not just to disconnect from technology, but to also use the time as an opportunity for students to reconnect with their communities.

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) students were recently challenged to go 48 hours without using their smartphones or social media accounts. Jimm and Kaylene Derksen, chapel speakers for LMS’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, focused on the theme “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Beautiful” over four different sessions. They highlighted the kinds of disconnection from God and other people that one can experience, sometimes resulting from smartphone addiction. The Derksens are both certified soul care providers and also staff members at Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Jimm is a personnel placement coach and Kaylene is the development director. One of EMM’s three core values is well-being. EMM seeks to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of its workers and those whom they serve around the world, as well as stakeholders. CASA Information Session Planned Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County is recruiting volunteers. Community members are encouraged to support the thousands of children across the country in need of permanent families by becoming a CASA. A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen age 21 or up who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interest of a child in court. The children that CASA volunteers advocate for have been abused or neglected and placed into the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and permanent home for the child as quickly as possible. The process to become a CASA volunteer advocate is multistep and includes an interview, training and shadowing. This process equips CASA volunteer advocates to work alongside youths who are in foster care. According to the organization, older youths who are served by a CASA are more likely to set goals for their future and have clear ideas about how to achieve them and are less likely to be homeless, in trouble, or in jail. CASA will hold a Tuesday, Dec. 18, information session from noon to 1 p.m. at Paul Davis Restoration, 1816 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for its winter 2019 training class beginning in February. CASA information sessions are an hourlong introduction and overview of the role of a CASA volunteer advocate. Attending an information session is a required first step in applying to the program. The session will be free and open to the public, though reservations are required due to limited seating. To reserve a seat, readers may contact CASA at 717-2083280 or casa@casalancaster.org.
