Students Learn About Vocations The middle school students of six Lancaster County Catholic schools recently celebrated National Vocation Awareness Week. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders from Our Lady of the Angels, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Sacred Heart, Resurrection, Saint John Neumann, and Saint Leo the Great schools participated in a Zoom presentation with the Rev. Sawicki, director of vocation for the Diocese of Harrisburg, and Sister Marianne Therese Lallone, IHM, vocation director of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Immaculata. Sawicki video chatted with the boys in all six schools to share his story. He explained that when he was a sophomore in high school, many people asked him about his future plans. Someone told him that he had the “look of a priest,” and that was the beginning of many conversations and reflections which ultimately led him to his vocation. Sawicki explained that when seeking to discern one’s vocation, a person should pray. Sawicki has been a priest for 11 years. Sawicki invited deacon Aaron Lynch to join the discussion. Lynch attended

public school, started focusing on his Catholic faith in seventh and eighth grades, and entered the seminary right after high school. He is in his final year of seminary. Lynch shared that his studies are important, but it is most rewarding to focus on becoming a good priest. The boys’ presentation also included video segments from some of the other 23 seminarians ages 18 to 62 in the Harrisburg Diocese. They spoke about their favorite parts of seminary and being a priest, such as celebrating Mass and being a spiritual father. The seminarians also emphasized that they have fun, including taking part in flag football and soccer games. The school

students were invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Lallone, in her presentation to the girls, emphasized that God wants everyone to know the fullness of His love and that each person is given many different gifts and talents through which he or she can help others see God’s love for them. Lallone said that as each person grows, he or she feels a call to a particular way of life that is his or her vocation. Lallone shared her personal story and some further thoughts. She said that God always brings people back to the little “nudges” of His plan. She told the girls to pay attention to the people in their lives, to give God time and space through prayer to allow Him to reveal His plan for them, and to build a relationship with God. She added that they should be faithful to who they are and to themselves and their friends.

John and Mable thank God for a solid family heritage and strong faith, which they say have contributed to their 60 years of marriage. John and Mable have retired from farming at their Marietta farm. During retirement, they remain busy blessing their family and many folks in their church and community. They have enjoyed traveling to many states and countries, golfing, and playing card games with their many friends.

The Delta Dental Community Care Foundation has announced that it will give $225,000 to food banks in Pennsylvania. This announcement fell on Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement that encourages people and organizations to do good. The donation seeks to help people experiencing food insecurity during the pandemic. Dental caries, or the disease that causes tooth decay, has been linked to food insecurity, meaning a disruption in food intake or eating patterns due to a lack of resources, according to the foundation. Michael Hora, chemical production line lead, has been named VisionCorps Employee of the Year as part of the 2020 Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year for the National Industries for the Blind (NIB). Each year, NIB recognizes an employee who is blind in each agency within its nationwide network of associated nonprofit agencies. The Salmon award honors the memory of Dr. Peter J. Salmon, who was instrumental in the passage of the Wagner-O’Day Act in 1938 and the formation of NIB. Beth Tice, VisionCorps vice president/COO, noted that Hora is willing to help wherever needed, is involved in safety and quality programs,

and has cross-trained so he can perform various jobs. Tice said Hora, who began working at VisionCorps in 2013, was recently promoted to team lead on the chemical line. He is a 2017 graduate of the Advocacy program and often travels with Dennis Steiner, VisionCorps’ CEO, to advocate for those with low vision. Hora became legally blind from glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps.
