ec. 6 was a big day for students and staff members of Blue Ball Elementary School (BBES), 126 Ewell Road, East Earl. Principal Heather Schrantz shared that the entire

student body, which includes 400 children in kindergarten through grade six, attended assemblies where Box of Light presenter Rand Whipple gave a chemistry presentation. Just prior to the afternoon assembly, which was for students in

grades four through six, Schrantz, accompanied by assistant principal Andrew Kreider, made an announcement concerning the school earning Tier One status for the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program from the Pennsylvania

Department of Education. The school had been informed of the achievement in late October. Dur ing the presentation, Schrantz noted that the school’s oldest students have been part of the PBIS process at BBES since it began three years ago. “You have See BBES pg 3

Ron Stern remembers joining the New Holland International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Lodge 413 in 1963. “There was a lodge on Locust Street across from the cemetery,” recalled Ron, who noted that the lodge members raised funds by holding bingo nights at the venue and enjoyed corn roasts in the backyard of the building. “That was a great time,” said Ron, adding that the local lodge had close to 60 members when he joined. On Nov. 20, Ron celebrated 60 years of being a member of the Odd Fellows when his fellow members and family held a surprise party at the Charles E. Ludwig VFW Post 7362, 755 R ancks C hurch Road, New Holland. Lodge member R alph Hess presented Ron with a plaque and a certificate of recognition from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to mark the occasion. Most of Ron’s six sons were there, including his youngest son, Kyle, who is also a lodge member. “Our code is ‘visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan,’” said Ron, who noted the IOOF was established in New Holland in 1850, which See IOOF Lodge pg 2

Originally, the lodge was formed by working men for social purposes and to give aid and assistance to each other when out of work. Home, which is associated with the Odd Fellows. Ron noted that at one time there was an orphans’ home in Meadville. The home served about 1,200 orphans over a 100-year period. Ron noted that there were once IOOF lodges in nearly every small town in the area. He recalled traveling to Long Island by bus with members of the Lititz lodge. He said that when the Ephrata and Elizabethtown lodges folded, they merged into the New Holland lodge. Ron said it saddens him to see membership dwindle from what it once was, but he is thankful for all the years

he has belonged to the lodge. “Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it,” he said. “I met a lot of people all over the country,” he added, sharing stories from trips to Blain, Philadelphia, and New York. The lodge meets on the first and third Mondays o f e ach month at the VFW post at 7:30 p.m. Ron explained that the first meeting is a business meeting and the second is a social meeting. “We are open for membership,” he noted. On a regional level, IOOF gives to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. When the lodge on Locust Street closed, the land was sold for apartment buildings. Part of the proceeds was donated to the New Holland Recreation Center. Ron said there is a plaque located on Locust Street to mark the site of the lodge. In the last several years, the lodge has held chicken barbecue fundraisers about twice a year. Ron said the lodge members start cooking chicken at 6 a.m. and that the barbecues are good fundraisers. IOOF officers include a noble grand, vice grand, warden, conductor, guardian, and chaplain, and officers change yearly. Ron served for a year as a grand lodge officer on the state level, and he has also served as a representative to the Middletown

BBES from pg 1 gotten to experience this journey with us,” she said. “For many of you, since the beginning of your days at Blue Ball, we have been talking about High Fives and how to be safe and respectful and responsible not only to make our own days successful but to make the days of those around us successful.” PBIS focuses on safety, respect, and responsibility in all areas of the school. High Fives are rewards that students earn for displaying behavior that exemplifies those three characteristics. “Success at BBES is getting along with folks and making sure everyone can do their best,” said Schrantz, who pointed out that the goal of the program is to duplicate those positive behaviors outside school. “It’s about learning and not only here at school, but learning how to do those processes so that when we go out into the community or play sports or eventually make our way into middle school, we have those skills to continue to be productive.” According to Schrantz, the success of PBIS at BBES can be traced to several teachers who formed a leadership team and worked with state employees who guided the process. “The team designed matrices for each of our learning environments,” said Schrantz, who said the matrices answer questions about what safety, respect,

and responsibility look like in the dining room or in the gym or on the playground. To reward students for positive behavior, High Five tickets were developed. In addition, 10 special Golden High Five tickets may be given out each day by staff members who distribute them on a rotating basis. Each student who earns a Golden ticket may take it to the office, where a secretary will call his or her parents with the good news. High Five tickets may be accumulated to earn prizes. One of the most popular prizes, according to Schrantz, is a coupon for a sundae kit that a student may share with a friend during lunch. The kit includes ice cream, cherries, sprinkles, and more. “Getting to share is the biggest treat,” said Schrantz. In recognition of Tier O ne achievement , the school received a banner from the state. Tier Two status will help the school meet the needs of another 15% of the school’s student population. “ With the help of all the teachers and kids doing their best and continuing to think about safe, respectful, and responsible behavior, the work of the first step has been achieved,” Schrantz told the students as she and Kreider held up the unrolled banner. “Thank you to all of you for continued efforts to make Blue Ball the best place it can be.”

Montgomery’s Christmas House has been a fixture at 193 Cambridge Road, Gap, since 1984. Each October, Norm Montgomery Jr. begins setting up the display, which includes nearly 45,000 lights and more than 300 Christmas characters. Each year on Thanksgiving night, Norm Jr. flips the switch and the Christmas House comes to life ready to delight visitors. This year the display will be open each evening from 5 to 9 p.m. until Sunday, Dec. 31, when hours run from 5 to 10 p.m. For 2023, however, the annual labor of love was almost derailed. Following Jan. 1 each year, Norm Jr. dismantles the display and stores the decorations on the third floor of the garage behind the house. Last February, when he had put away all but the last load, a fire broke out in two sheds adjacent to the garage. The flames ran up the corner of the garage to where the decorations were kept. “We lost about 90 Christmas ornaments,” said Norm Jr., noting that with most items the damage was apparent right away. “We had to clear the garage out, and we could see what

was melted.” However, a surprise was in store when Norm Jr. began unpacking the display to start putting it up in October. “Once I started getting the (decorations) out, I could see there was damage I hadn’t realized (had occurred),” he reported. A call went out for donations of Christmas items to replace the lost ones. Area residents came forward to help, and with some extra effort Norm Jr. was able to complete the display and open on time this year. He added food trucks on the two weekends prior to Christmas, and Santa visited once again to round out the attraction. Not only did Norm Jr. have the display ready for Thanksgiving, but he also improved upon it. The walk-through begins with a nearly life-size Nativity scene on the front porch of the house. On the roof is an outline of Santa arriving in a helicopter. “I completely redid the helicopter,” said Norm Jr., who explained that previously the helicopter was outlined in smaller lights. “There were more of them, but this year, it is brighter and only half the bulbs are needed.” Icicles on the house were also replaced. “We added a lot of things,” said Norm

townlively.com

Norm Montgomery Jr. did not let fire damage deter him from setting up the Montgomery’s Christmas House display for the 2023 holidays.

Jr. “The North Pole (sign) and this Santa Claus are both new,” he shared, noting that there are lots of new deer, some of which are tiny reindeer. A new trio of dogs includes two dachshunds and a Welsh Corgi. A replica of Olaf, the snowman from “Frozen,” is part of the display as is an outline of a large stocking with elves. New holiday bears and Christmas trees are also included. The walkthrough concludes with a second Nativity scene. This year, Norm Jr. has added a few benches to the lighted walk so families may stop to take photos. Norm Jr. does most of

the actual setup of the display, with Norm Sr. helping with the strings of lights along the road. Norm Jr. noted that replacing items is not inexpensive, even with shopping after-Christmas sales and yard sales. He pointed out that wiring and bulbs for a few large items, including the helicopter, angels, candles, and wreaths ran into thousands of dollars. “We still appreciate donations,” Norm Jr. stated. For more information, call 717-768-8726, email normanmont2168@ gmail.com, or search for “Montgomery’s Christmas House” on Facebook.

Many people consider New Year’s Day the unofficial end of the holiday season. That often means that New Year’s Eve is an opportunity to socialize, gather and party one final time before returning to the routines of daily life. The first known instance of New Year’s celebrations can be traced to around 2,000 B.C. in the region of Mesopotamia. Celebrants gathered in March, rather than January, as this was the time of the vernal equinox, when the darkness of winter subsided and agricultural life could begin anew. A s individuals count down the days until New Year’s Eve festivities, the following planning tips may make the celebrations occasions to remember. Party planners may consider giving their event a theme. Guests can come dressed as dynamic duos

like Mario and Luigi, or the party can evoke a bygone era, such as the Roaring ‘20s. Let guests know what they can do to play the part. Decorations should be tied into the theme as well. Classic New Year’s Eve decorations include balloons, streamers and confetti. Hosts may consider a festive balloon arch or backdrop that also can serve as a place to pose for photo opportunities. In order to avoid guests becoming wiped out by the time midnight arrives, start the party at around 9 or 10 p.m. and anticipate its lasting into the wee hours of the morning. Hosts may also tailor d r i n k s to t h e s e a s o n . They may utilize seasonal ingredients when crafting drinks or serve drinks that are expected at this time of year, such as eggnog that includes alcohol or cranberry Moscow mules.

To keep guests having fun at the party, provide various activities. Festivities may include card games or board games, karaoke or a trivia contest. B evera ges should be accessible. Unless the host is hiring a bartender who will be on call to pour drinks, having drinks ready to go is a smart idea. In addition to cans or bottles of beer or malt beverages, have ready-to-go mixed drinks available by selecting a signature drink and preparing a bulk batch. Foods should also be provided in a self-serve f a s h i o n . F i n g e r fo o d s and bite-sized morsels may not require guests to carry plates, reducing the chances for spillage. Sliders, miniature quiches and dessert shooters may be suitable. Hosts should also try to curate a winning playlist. They may ask guests to

submit a list of their favorite tunes to help compile a collection of songs that will ebb and flow with the evening’s events. Hosts should include tunes suited to singing along like “Don’t Stop Believin’” or “Tiny Dancer.” Those planning parties may choose to offer takeaway gifts for designated drivers. Encourage guests to stay sober and volunteer for designated driving duties by offering prizes. Ideas include gift cards to coffee shops or restaurants. Hosts should also be ready for midnight. They should provide a large television to show the midnight countdown and start pouring champagne roughly 20 minutes before midnight to ensure all glasses are full when the clock strikes 12. Ne w Ye a r ’s E v e c e l ebrations get an extra boost when the party is well-planned.
