Reid Hosts Military Family Reunion
The Stark family includes (from left) Air Force Staff Sgt. Trevor Stark, Payson, Witten, and Jaclyn. The Stark family was reunited at Reid Elementary School during a program about community helpers. Reid Elementary School hosted a military father’s surprise reunion with his daughter, a kindergartner in Stephanie Molnar’s class, on Dec. 19. Air Force Staff Sgt. Trevor Stark had served in Korea for the past year and had not seen his family during his deployment. With the help of Reid staff and Stark’s wife, Jaclyn, Stark surprised his daughter, Payson, by being part of a mock lesson on community helpers. Molnar created a guessing game about community
helpers and introduced three service members who volunteered to be in on the surprise, including Lower Swatara Police Officer Jon Miller, Lower Swatara firefighter Josh Burrows, and Dr. Jayson Loeffert, who works for Hershey Medical Center and Middletown Area School District. The final community helper to enter the classroom was Stark. Payson recognized her father and left her seat to reunite with him. See Reunion pg 9

This year, more than 42,000 service members were honored at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, and a total of more than 2.2 million veterans were honored at 2,158 locations across the U.S. The Harrisburg Chapter was one of 145 sponsoring groups engaged in friendly competition in support of the event. The Harrisburg Chapter members surpassed all previous years’ total chapter sponsorships with 850 wreaths, of which 260 were grave-specific special placements ordered by loved ones. The Harrisburg Chapter volunteers placed the grave-specific wreaths and took photographs that will be sent to all sponsors. The DAR was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting
historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Harrisburg Chapter was founded in 1894 and will locally continue to preserve the legacies of the Founding Fathers and the patriots who fought for the independence of the United States of America. Manheim brothers (from left) Tyler, Drew, and Eric Zimmerman will be among the thousands of contestants from across the state exhibiting livestock at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. The 104th annual event is set to take place from Jan. 4 to 11. By Chelsea Peifer
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be over for many, but for Manheim brothers Tyler, Eric, and Drew Zimmerman and hundreds of other people across the state, life is about to kick into full speed as they make final preparations for their part in the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The 104th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled to take place from Saturday through Saturday, Jan. 4 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-year-old Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions
will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and followthrough,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. In addition to being judged for livestock show class awards at the Farm Show, each contestant is judged on showmanship. Eric, Tyler, and Drew spend hours guiding the animals at home to ensure the animals are ready for the show ring. They practice in
Watershed Stewards from pg 1 2020, which will be a joint program between Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The class will consist of 40 hours of training on various topics, including water quality, stream health, groundwater, native plants, and recreational resources. Once this part of the training is complete, trainees will perform 50 hours of volunteer service on selected projects such as organizing and executing stream cleanups, designing and installing demonstration rain gardens, assisting in stream restorations, and organizing educational workshops addressing topics such as rain barrels, pollution prevention, invasive plant control, and storm water management. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome. Individuals under age 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or adult. The program will start on Tuesday, March 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will continue
every Tuesday through May. There will be several Saturday field trips as well. Informational sessions will be held in January, and all sessions will begin at 7 p.m. Sessions will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Lebanon County Extension Office, 2120 Cornwall Road, Lebanon; on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Dauphin County Extension Office, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin; and on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Lancaster County Extension Office, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Registration for these meetings is available at https://extension.psu.edu/ master-watershed-steward-informationmeeting. If interested, readers may also contact Casey Clauser at 717-639-3589 or cmc7444@psu.edu. For more information about the MWS program, readers may visit extension.psu.edu/programs/water shed-stewards/counties/dauphin -lebanon-and-lancaster-counties.
Eric Zimmerman (left) and Tyler Zimmerman will be showing sheep and pigs at this year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show. The brothers are both members of the Manheim Central High School FFA. various environments and employ tactics like playing a radio so that the animals are not as overwhelmed by all the noise that will surround them 24/7 at the Farm Show. Each animal is washed before traveling to the Farm Show and again before entering the show ring. “Sheep take a lot of work,” noted Tracy. Each lamb will be sheared at home and at the Farm Show in addition to getting washed and blow-dried to make it look its best. “I’m very competitive, so I like the challenge of getting them ready,” said Eric. He earned Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show. With Eric and Tyler being so close in age, they often end up competing in the same division which naturally intensifies the competition. Collectively, the family has achieved a lengthy list of accolades at local fairs, including Champion Market Hog and Reserve Champion Lightweight Market Hog at the 2017 Manheim Farm Show, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Ephrata Fair, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Elizabethtown Fair, and Grand Champion Market Hog at the 2016 Elizabethtown Fair. “It’s fun showing the animals,” remarked Tyler. “You work a

At the big shows like this, you’re amazed by how many people are into this.” In addition to animals, the Pennsylvania Farm Show will feature hundreds of exhibitors, vendors, and demonstrations; a 1,000-pound butter sculpture; and an assortment of food and beverages. The program inspired the Community Sing event. Run by Kristyn Beeman, clinical music therapist, the Therapeutic Music Program includes listening to and learning to play various instruments. The classes are designed to help growers build confidence, learn, work together, and face challenges together. It is also meant to promote the growers’ overall health. Thoughts for the New Year Here are some thoughts to remember as we go into this new year: Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. The second mouse gets the cheese. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. Happy Birthdays First of all for the week ... Happy birthday to my handsome

In the same way that CPR helps people assist an individual having a medical emergency, mental health first aid helps people assist someone experiencing a mental health-related problem or crisis - even if they have no clinical training. Seating is limited, and advance registration is required by contacting Don Hossler at 717-944-2250.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot filled with whatever you would like. I like sugar and fruit! But you can fill them with scrambled eggs and cheese, a sweet cream-cheese filling, meats, veggies, chocolate mousse, pie filling, or just plain granulated sugar ... the possibilities are endless!
Joke of the Week While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.
