Eighth-Grader Wins Geography Bee Therapeutic Skating Program Slated In the fifth tiebreaker round, Lower Dauphin Middle School (LDMS) eighth-grader Toby Waters’ knowledge of Iceland proved to be the difference in winning the school’s annual Geography Bee. In doing so, he became the third LDMS student to win the bee in back-to-back years and the fourth two-time winner. Toby and second-place finisher Rudy Anthony, a fellow eighth-grader, were tied after the three championship questions and needed five rounds of sudden victory questions to determine a champion. Seventh-grader Annabell Riordan was third. Toby, Rudy, and Annabell were declared the top three finishers after a series of six rounds with a field of seven finalists. The bee started with 20 contestants who answered seven rounds of questions on topics ranging from states and continents to physical and historical geography. Toby will take a written exam later in the school year for a chance to represent the school at the state geography bee on Friday, March 29.

Hershey Figure Skating Club will offer Therapeutic Skating classes. The five-week session will begin on Monday, Jan. 7.

Principal Jill Freedman (back, left) and assistant principal Johnathon Breininger (back, right) congratulated the top three finishers in the Lower Dauphin Middle School Geography Bee. Earning top honors were (front, from left) Rudy Anthony, who was the runner-up; Toby Waters, who was the champion for the second straight year; and Annabell Riordan, who placed third.

Hershey Figure Skating Club will offer Therapeutic Skating beginning on Monday, Jan. 7, at 4:30 p.m. at the Giant Center, 550 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. DAR Chapter Places Wreaths At Cemetery On Dec. 14, 2018, the Harrisburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) placed 230 name-specific wreaths at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to honor those who have served. These special placements were laid by volunteers, and a picture of each headstone with the wreath was taken to be sent to the relatives who had ordered the placement. Again on Dec. 15, members of the Harrisburg Chapter of the DAR, along with other DAR members from around the state, attended the memorial ceremony and assisted with laying the thousands of wreaths still to be placed. The Harrisburg Chapter contributed more than 700 wreaths. Through this effort and the efforts of many other organizations and individuals, every grave at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery had a wreath during the holiday season. Derry Seniors Set Meeting Retirees Plan Luncheon Event Jwana Smith will present “On Becoming a United States Citizen” at the next Derry Seniors gathering, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The program will be held in room 7 on the lower level at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. Smith, a community relations officer in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Philadelphia District

Office, will discuss the process an immigrant must undergo to become an American citizen. Smith will also answer audience questions. No reservations are needed, and no admission will be charged. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available. Following devotions and the program, lunch will be available in the fellowship hall for a nominal fee per person. A

pharmacist will be on hand to answer questions regarding medications. A complete calendar of events for the 2018-19 season is available at www.derrypres.org. Derry Seniors offers adults age 55 and older an opportunity to gather, socialize, and learn about people and places within the community. For more information, readers may call 717-533-9667.

Program To Focus On Autism, Art The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine, 700 Crescent Drive, Hershey, will host a First Friday presentation titled “Defining ‘My’ Spectrum: An Autistic Individual’s Journey Towards Neurodiversity Through Art.” The event will be held on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, from noon to 1 p.m. in Room C3860 on the third floor of

the Biomedical Research Building on the campus of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, 700 Crescent Drive, Hershey. As an autistic adult, Mark Colin Oldland will illustrate his social range through his paintings and drawings. Using the dichotomy between his analytical observations and his emotional

response, he will provide a positive social commentary for autistic individuals and promote inclusion for anyone who may be perceived as being different. The lecture is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. For more information, readers may contact Claire de Boer at cdeboer@pennstate health.psu.edu.

DAR Chapter Holds Meeting The Lebanon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) learned about Thaddeus Stevens at its November meeting. Steve Anderson, a local history interpreter from Harrisburg, performed his one-man show as Thaddeus Stevens. Although he was raised in Vermont, Stevens lived most of his life in central Pennsylvania, including Adams County and Lancaster County. During the Civil War, his Caledonia iron works business was burnt to the ground by Confederate Gen. J.B. Early on his way to Gettysburg. As a state Congressman, Stevens was a leader in enacting laws that gave all Pennsylvania children the right to free public schools. As a U.S. Congressman, he was a leader in writing the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, and the 14th Amendment, which granted citizens equal rights under the law.

Harvest Sharing News Announced commonwealth. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event. The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters. HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state. HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program. Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Pennsylvanians can also donate money to the Buck for the Pot campaign, which supports HSH. For more information on Hunters Sharing the Harvest, readers may visit www.sharedeer.org. Thanks to record-breaking donations of deer meat from Pennsylvania hunters, generous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth. Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991. The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations. With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free. During the 2017-18 season, a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the
