High Hopes For Haiti To Offer Virtual Cooking Class BY FRANCINE FULTON
ome chefs of all ages are invited to learn how to cook an authentic three-course Italian meal - all without leaving their kitchens.

The Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation will host a virtual cooking class titled “Mangia With Mariella: Cooking With Love to Bring Hope to Haiti” on Sunday, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m. During the Zoom webinar, chef Mariella
Amato from Mangia Mangia Italian Grill in Hershey will teach participants how to make the meal while raising money to feed the children of Haiti who are served by the foundation. Those who attend the virtual class will not be cooking along with the chef, but they will be able to prepare the meal on their own time. “Everyone will get a list of recipes and an ingredients list. They are not cooking while they watch,” explained Rachel Bowles, director of operations for the foundation, noting that one of the dishes is a ragu that requires three hours of simmering on the stove. The virtual cooking class will be free, but attendees will have an opportunity to donate to the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides education, preventative health care, nutrition and support to children in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. “In between the courses we will talk about what we do in Haiti and invite people to support our efforts in Haiti,” said Bowles. The founder and president of the foundation is Dr. Rodrigue Mortel, who served in a number of positions during his 30 years at Penn State Hershey, including chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
and founding director of Penn State Cancer Institute. “He is Haitian and founded the foundation after he retired from being a cancer surgeon at Hershey Medical Center,” Bowles noted. Mortel’s parents were illiterate, and he believed the best way to give back to his native country was to provide education to students as a means to get them out of the cycle of poverty. “(Mortel’s family) got evicted from a small apartment that they were renting,” Bowles said. “They could not pay the $2 rent, and (Mortel) remembered his mom saying this would not have happened if she had gone to school. So it became his mission to go to school and help other people go to school.” The foundation established a preschool, an elementary school and a secondary school for children in Haiti, and it offers literacy and vocational program for adults. The schools have been educating children since 2000. “In the 2021 calendar year, there will be three anniversaries: the primary school - 20 years; the high school - 10 years; and the preschool five years,” Bowles added. “The cooking event kicks off the anniversary year.” Registration is required to attend the virtual cooking class. To register, readers may visit www.highhopesforhaiti.org/events. All registrants will be entered in a giveaway drawing. For more information about the foundation, readers may visit www.highhopesforhaiti.org or www.facebook.com/highhopes forhaiti, email info@mortelhhh.org or call 844-466-7835.
With traditional meetings, service projects, and fundraisers paused due to COVID-19, the Hershey Lions Club continues to support the residents of Derry Township, as well as others across the United States and globally. Recently, the Hershey Lions Club supported the local Cocoa Packs Holiday Toy Drive. The initiative helps disadvantaged children receive Christmas presents. To support the effort, club members and friends donated new, unwrapped gifts along with monetary donations worth more than $500. “The Hershey Lions Club strives to collaborate with other local organizations to help Derry Township residents,” shared current club president Steve Gallerizzo. “Together, we can strengthen youth development and the community we serve by working cooperatively to bring about significant change.” Earlier in December, the Hershey Lions Club also arranged to provide meals for families staying See Hershey Lions pg 3

Museum Offers E-Learning Classes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Like many places, Winters Heritage House Museum had to adapt to changes this past year. When the pandemic forced the site to temporarily close its doors at 47 E. High St. in Elizabethtown, it also opened an opportunity. “With nobody coming into the museum, we wanted to have a way for our staff to keep contributing to our mission, and we came up with ideas that could all be done virtually,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. The museum launched a series of e-learning courses with topics including crafts, recipes and science lessons. “We sat down as a staff and started brainstorming ideas of things we thought would be fun for people to do,” Landis noted. “These are all things people did to entertain themselves in the days before TV.” Topics are geared toward children but can be adapted for adults as well, she said. “ We have a lesson on scherenschnitte, which is German scissors cutting. You can
download patterns and print them out,” she explained. “We have a unit on embroidery. Kids love this. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much kids love to sew.” Other crafts include a print-and-fold Conestoga wagon and packhorse train. “Many people don’t realize how important packhorse trains were to early transportation,” Landis stated. “These lessons give people an opportunity to learn as they are being entertained.” Recipes in the e-learning series include everything from homemade ice cream to Irish shortbread. “We came up with recipes that kids can help with,” Landis said. “Kids were definitely in our minds when we were coming up with topics. Most of the recipes are very simple, and we taste-tested everything.” History and science lessons in the series include videos that explain things like how soap was invented and what happens when oil and water mix. “We have a lesson on butter
Nancy Landis, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum, gets assistance from Orville the lamb when teaching a lesson on how milk becomes butter.
churning, which shows what happens to cream when you churn butter and the science behind what’s happening,” Landis remarked. Plans are in the works for more e-learning lessons in the next few months, she noted. In addition to the e-learning series, on its website the museum offers a virtual tour of four murals throughout Elizabethtown.
Shifting to an online presence took some patience, Landis said, but it has had a silver lining. “We had so much fun developing these lessons,” she explained. “It was a challenge for us, but it was great to do something different like this.” For more information on the e-learning series, readers may visit www.elizabethtown history.org/e-learning.html.

Mother And Daughter Create Product For Dogs A new local business that was started during the COVID-19 pandemic has developed a product designed to help eliminate stinky dog gas. After being cooped up with a new Labradoodle puppy named Cash, company owner Jillian Biehl Morrison and her daughter, Everlee, created the product. “There really was nothing on the market that would do what we needed, so we created
our own,” Jillian explained. Months of research, trial and error, and taste testing led to the final product, STINKYbutt dog treats. Designed to aid in digestion, the treats are made of all natural, human grade ingredients and are crafted in small batches. “It was important for them to be natural, so they can help the dog’s belly feel better,” explained Everlee, 11. Jillian and Everlee have been
able to spend quality time together every step of the way. “It has been really amazing to do this together, and teach Ev how to start and run a business, even in a pandemic,” said Jillian. “And I like doing things with my mom,” Everlee added. STINKYbutt treats are available at www.nomorestinky butt.com and www.facebook .com/nomorestinkybutt and by searching for @nomorestinky butt on Instagram.

Attention Arthritis Sufferers...
Exclusive Arthritis Workshop Reveals The 3 Keys to Feel Younger and Feel Stronger Naturally Without Aches, Pains and Stiffness Do you feel like your life is on hold because of everyday aches and pains? Do you have trouble walking, doing stairs or standing for long periods? Do you feel like you need to take a rest when you’re trying to keep up with your family (kids and grandkids)…or even keep up with your dog? Have you been told that your stiff, swollen, achy joints are “bone-on-bone” and there’s nothing you can do about it? Are you looking to stay active? Feel normal again? Feel younger and stronger naturally without medications, injections or surgery? If you are looking to feel younger and feel stronger naturally, then going to the Arthritis Workshop may be one of the best decisions you make. Arthritis can cause you to feel pain, stiffness, and achy…making it difficult to move… even with everyday activities. Arthritis can stop you from feeling normal. • It can force you to take pain medications, Ibuprofen, or even get cortisone injections (which are known to cause other health problems). • Everyday activities like walking, driving, doing stairs, housework or even sleeping can feel difficult to impossible to perform. (Especially in the morning when you first get out of bed). • You can feel irritated, upset or uncomfortable trying to keep up with your family or friends. • You might feel like you’re neglecting your yard, house or garden… • Arthritis can distract you from focusing on what you’re doing (forgetting why you went to the store…or what you were going to do). • And it can take away from your ability to live a normal life…feeling like you have to depend on other people…or having them wait on you while you “just sit for a minute.” Less movement and less living can lead to depression, stress and a life of sitting. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy, we’ve helped thousands of arthritis sufferers from right here in Harrisburg…and the rest of Central PA…who have suffered needlessly with arthritis…it’s our specialty. Most were experiencing pain, aching or stiffness in their back, neck, hips, knees and shoulders…and were looking for natural treatments… By request to help arthritis sufferers, I’m hosting an Arthritis Workshop right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake arthritis sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 2 Most Common Types of Arthritis… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • Why your joints feel stiff in the morning…and what you can do about it. • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Claim My Seat for the Arthritis Workshop? Call 717-210-9945 to Register for the Arthritis Workshop and Claim Your Seat. When you register, we will mail you The Arthritis Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. Because of limited space, we only have 20 seats available for the event…and this announcement will be going out to over 9,000 people who’ve been treated at Madden PT PLUS sent to an audience of 41,000 people on Facebook. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call 717-210-9945. How Much Is It to Attend the Arthritis Workshop? The event is FREE. No cost to you… ***PLUS as a Special Bonus, all attendees of the Arthritis Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The 7 Secrets to Permanent Relief for Arthritis.” Looking forward to seeing you there, Chad Madden, Physical Therapist – Paid Advertisement –

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) urges motorists to drive safely in work zones. Even though construction season is winding down in many places, PennDOT road crews are still working on the roadways. Drivers should not speed, never drive distracted, and always buckle up, especially in work zones. Pennsylvania law states that anyone stopped by law enforcement for violating the posted speed limit by more than 5 mph will face doubled fines. The fine is determined based on the amount the driver is traveling over the speed limit. Gov. Tom Wolf signed a law in 2016 that says any driver who causes serious bodily injury within a work zone could face a fine and a sixmonth license suspension, and a driver causing a death within a work zone could face a larger fine and a oneyear license suspension. Drivers who do not turn on their headlights in posted work zones face a fine. Additionally, in an effort to change unsafe driving behaviors in work zones, Pennsylvania’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement began earlier this year. The program uses vehicle-mounted systems to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more using electronic speed timing devices. AWZSE systems can be deployed in active work zones, where workers are present, on the turnpike as well as any active work zone on a federal aid highway - this includes higher class roadways like interstates, major arterials, and numbered routes. Registered owners will receive a warning letter for a first offense and a violation notice and a fine for subsequent offenses. These violations are civil penalties only; no points will be assessed to drivers’ licenses. For more information on work zone safety, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.
were Miss America local winners Miss Liberty Bell, Jenna Martorana, and Miss Liberty Bell’s Outstanding Teen, Maddie Matthews. This year’s parade was held as a reverse parade due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The parade participants were stationary while the attendees drove by in their vehicles to see the floats, characters, bands, beauty queens, dancers and organizations that were stationed along a loop around City Island. The parade drew thousands of attendees. Through Angels of Mercy, Frisby reaches out to people who are sick, disabled, elderly and homeless. She is a graduate of Middletown Area High School; HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; and Penn State University.
