Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 - during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge. The Great Winter Warm-up January events will jump-start MCC’s supply of comforters, which are sent to people in crisis around the world each year. In 2018, MCC sent more than 53,000 comforters as a practical message of love and compassion in the name of Christ. East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting and sturdy backing fabric into warm, durable and beautiful comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops have already been sewn together. Events have been scheduled

at four locations in Lancaster County. Volunteers may gather on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Monday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Erisman Mennonite Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim. A light supper will be provided. More details are available by contacting Janet Runion Patton at 717-9264008 or jcpatton99@gmail.com. Helpers may also participate on Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata. A light lunch will be provided. More information is available from Betsy Kennel, who may be reached at 717-733-2847 or BetsyKennel@mcc.org. Garden Spot Village (Village Square Park), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host an event on Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants may bring a bag lunch or dine at one of the Garden Spot Village restaurants. More details are available from Garden Spot Village Resident Services at 717-355-6000. On Friday, Jan. 24, at Lancaster Mennonite New Danville Campus, 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, students will work on comforters during the day, and the public is invited to help finish them from 3 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, readers may contact Lindsay Carson at 717-872-2506, ext. 3002, or carsonlb@lancaster mennonite.org. Additionally, in Dauphin County, comforters will be made

on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church, 2217 Derry St., Harrisburg. Coffee, tea and water will be provided, but attendees should bring their lunch. For more details, readers may contact Kim Mumper at tassier59@gmail.com. Donations of comforters are welcome throughout the year. Individuals and sewing groups can make comforters anytime, using the instructions at www.mcc.org/comforters or join other comforter makers at the regional MCC Material Resources Center in Ephrata. For more information, readers may call the center at 717733-2847. For more information about The Great Winter Warm-up, readers may visit www.great winterwarmup.org. MCC was founded in 1920 when groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development and strengthens peace-building initiatives in more than 50 countries. Comforters and blankets have been part of MCC’s relief resources ever since the end of World War II.

Snow Removal from pg 1 should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slip-

pery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

Hi, everyone! Yes, I am that crazy lady that still has all her Christmas decorations up. I cannot bear the thought of taking them down and putting them away yet. So I am going to let them up for another couple weeks ... but I promise I will take them down before February! (This will make my son happy. Ha ha ha!) The Train At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel by our side. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant, i.e., our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. Others will step down over time and leave a permanent vacuum. Some, however, will go so unnoticed that we don’t realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life. I wish you all a joyful journey!

Audrey Shutter of Royer’s Flowers & Gifts displays some of the 1,000-plus holiday cards and coloring pages the company collected for area veterans in conjunction with the Holidays for Heroes program of the American Red Cross. Royer’s collected the cards and coloring pages from the public throughout November in each of its stores. This year, the Red Cross distributed holiday cards to more than 700 veterans in 30 locations in its greater Pennsylvania region. One of those locations is Frey Village, a continuing care retirement community in Middletown, where the Red Cross and Royer’s hosted a holiday party for 18 veterans on Dec. 16.
