SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
Donation Will Establish Sensory Awareness Program The Association of Faculty and Friends (AFF) of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine donated $12,500 to the Department of Emergency Medicine on Nov. 14, 2018, to establish the AFF Emergency Department Sensory Awareness Program. According to Betty Rigberg, president of AFF, the AFF traditionally distributes its funds through an annual grant process, and this is the first nonendowed fund for a program initiative. Individuals may donate directly to the effort through the fund. The new program will focus on helping patients with autism spectrum disorder and their families when they visit the emergency department. The funds will also be used to
provide training to emergency department staff in order to equip them with the skills and procedures needed to ensure the patients receive the highest level of care, including access to resources that cater to their individual sensory needs and tools that may help them tolerate new sensations and regulate their emotions. The AFF is a nonprofit organization with a mission to support and promote medical education, research, clinical care and scholarship; provide a community of friendship to its members through interest groups; and serve the needs of the community of which it is a part. dance a hard shoe and a soft shoe round in the first heat. The top 50 percent of the dancers in each age group will then be recalled to dance their two rounds again the following day. Only the top half of the competitors from heat two will progress to the third and final round, which is a nontraditional set dance that showcases rhythm, footwork, and endurance. The ceili team consists of eight dancers plus one alternate. The team will perform a traditional group dance called a ceili, which is judged on uniformity as a team. Ceili dancing in Ireland began with group dances passed down through generations by tradition. They were eventually put into writing in the Irish dancing commission rule book in 1939. The Hooley team dancers, ages 10 and 11, are Abigail Kelly, Mia Kelly, Sophia MacCartney, Natalie Raff, Annabelle Rajkowski, Mia Rajkowski, Emily Stauffer, Makenna Urban, and Avery Winters.

Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in
the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. The Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series is back for its 30th year. The three-race series will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Participants who complete all three races will now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/event s. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom long-sleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage

Parents and guardians are invited to the ninth annual MOMS Club of Elizabethtown preschool fair on Jan. 19 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown. More than 15 local schools and organizations will be represented at the free event.
Elizabethtown and the surrounding areas are rich in resources and opportunities, but sometimes finding and sorting through all of those options can be overwhelming - especially for parents scouting out potential schools for their children. That is why the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown hosts a preschool fair every year. President Erica Leilous stated that the purpose of the event is to highlight educational offerings of local preschools in order to help parents make the right choice for educating their young children. The ninth annual MOMS Club of Elizabethtown preschool fair is set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Admission is free. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26. Leilous noted that preschools typically begin sign-ups and enrollment for the fall in the spring of the same year, so exploring options early is key. “While most schools start when the child is age 3 or 4, some, such as Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, can start as young as age 2,” added Leilous. “Those attending Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County can
start as infants.” Schools and organizations scheduled to take part in the event include Bossler Christian Preschool, Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC), Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, Fishburn Flock Christian Day Care and Early Learning Center, GEARS Kids Center, Kids Playhouse at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, Kraybill Mennonite School, Lancaster Mennonite School - Hershey Campus, Mount Calvary Christian School, Play 2 Learn, Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, Susquehanna Waldorf School, Tiny Timbers Christian Preschool, and Under the Willow Preschool. “It is a great opportunity to explore all the schools at one time, in one location, versus researching all the options on your own,” Leilous remarked. “It is great to have the face-to-face interaction and to meet individuals that could possibly be working with your child.” Additionally, the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown will hold a bake sale at the fair. A local business that offers educational classes and camps for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children will have a table of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities set up for attendees to try and pur-
chase. Plus, a local school bus service will have a bus parked outside for another Touch-A-Bus experience, which Leilous said was a popular part of last year’s preschool fair, too. Leilous described the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown as a group of mothers that are currently at home raising their children. Members must have an Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Bainbridge, Marietta, Maytown, or Lawn address to join officially, as the club is an official chapter of MOMS Club International. The group gathers monthly at an official Club Connections meeting, typically held on the first Friday of each month at a location in Elizabethtown. “This meeting is where club news, planning, and event discussion take place while children play,” said Leilous. Members also take turns planning and hosting play dates, activities, outings, and childfriendly field trips to local places. “It is a great way for moms to make friends with other moms in the area that are also currently home and gives children opportunities to interact and play with others,” commented Leilous. For more information on MOMS Club of Elizabethtown, interested individuals may stop by the membership table at the preschool fair or email etown momsclub@gmail.com.
Rugby Club Breaks Ground On Future Home On Nov. 30, 2018, Harrisburg Rugby Football Club, in conjunction with Londonderry Township in Dauphin County, broke ground to begin construction of Perseverance Fields, the future home of the Harrisburg Rugby Football Club. These types of facilities will help to secure field space for various events and opportunities designed to help grow the game of rugby, as well as create a community resource for various events. There will be three fields, one at international rugby standards
that will be unlike any other field set up within the region. The fields are anticipated to be ready by the fall of 2019. The Harrisburg Rugby Football Club was founded in 1969 and is approaching its 50-year anniversary. The men and women of Harrisburg Rugby Football Club provide support for community development through recreational activities and aim to encourage and promote the ethos of camaraderie, discipline, and respect to other underserved entities. Growth and development of the
rugby community is the club’s goal. To contribute to the further development of the field complex, readers may make a donation through the GoFundMe or with recurring payments through Just Giving. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) recently inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame, recognizing their exceptional service to the department, the Pennsylvania National Guard, and Pennsylvania’s veterans. Honored were retired Maj. Gen. Walter F. Pudlowski Jr., retired Command Sgt. Maj. Nicholas “Chip” Gilliland, and Helen Sajer. The DMVA Hall of Fame, established in 1998, recognizes unique and exemplary contributions and significant achievements by an individual in service and support of DMVA. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor conferred upon an individual by the department. Pudlowski, of Grantville, entered the U.S. Army as an enlisted soldier in October 1965 and was later commissioned through the Army Officer Candidate School program. He served in the United States and Panama and was a platoon leader in Vietnam. After leaving active service in 1972, Pudlowski served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He served in leadership assignments in the 1st and 2nd Battalions 109th Infantry and Headquarters 55th Brigade and as the 28th Divi-
sions G3, chief of staff and deputy commanding general for Maneuver. From October 1998 to October 2003, he commanded the 28th Infantry Division, preparing troops for various combat and peacekeeping missions throughout the world. In his final assignment before retirement in November 2005, Pudlowski was the special assistant to the director of the Army National Guard and was called upon to serve as the acting director of the Army National Guard and as the National Guard Bureau J3 operations officer during Hurricane Katrina. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and the U.S. Army War College. Gilliland, of Palmyra, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1986, completing basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Va. He was then assigned to B Company, 159th Aviation, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. In 1988, he was reassigned to B Co, 7/101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He left active duty and served in the Individual Ready Reserve. In 1991, he was called back to active duty to support Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Veterans Receive Holiday Greetings
Emily Mallis (left), Royer’s Flowers and Gifts marketing manager, presented Rosanne Pogash, American Red Cross coordinator of special projects in service to the armed forces, with a total of more than 4,000 holiday cards and coloring pages. As part of the Holidays for Heroes program, the cards and coloring pages will be delivered to veterans living in long-term care facilities throughout the region.
Cards and coloring pages created by children were ready to be delivered through the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program.
After briefly returning to the Individual Ready Reserve, Gilliland joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1994 and was assigned to Company G, 104th Aviation. He served in Company G until May of 1996, when he was hired as a CH-47 instructor at the Eastern Army National Guard Aviation Training Site. In November 2009, Gilliland was selected as the state command sergeant major, Pennsylvania National Guard, and served in that position until May 2012. In May of 2012, he resigned as the state command sergeant major to serve as the senior non-commissioned officer, B Company, 2-104th Aviation, Task Force Nomad, for a 17-month train-up and deployment to Afghanistan. Upon returning from his deployment, Gilliland was assigned to the State Aviation Office as the senior aviation sergeant major until his retirement in February 2014. He currently works as chief, Division of Reintegration and Outreach, within the Office of Veterans Affairs at DMVA. Sajer, of Camp Hill, is the president and founder of Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc., an all-volunteer, statewide nonprofit corporation formed to assist wounded
and disabled veterans of the commonwealth to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. Sajer and her husband, the late Maj. Gen. Gerald T. Sajer, established the nation’s first Family Support Program for the Pennsylvania National Guard, which created networks to inform and support the families of National Guard soldiers and airmen as the frequency and length of their deployments to support the war efforts in Iraq increased. Sajer also conceived, established, and operated an annual youth camp at Fort Indiantown Gap for the children of National Guard soldiers, serving for six years as the camp nurse. This program served as a model for many other states. She also undertook major organizing and fundraising activities for Sergeant’s Grove and the Keystone Lodge at Fort Indiantown Gap, a meeting and recreation site dedicated as a living memorial to those who have served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Sajer graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and is a retired registered nurse. For more information about the DMVA, readers may visit www.dmva.pa.gov.

Sieglitz Named To Manage Partnership The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has named Brenda Sieglitz to manage the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, one of Pennsylvania’s efforts to restore and protect its rivers and streams by planting 10 million trees by the end of 2025. The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is a collaborative effort, coordinated by CBF, of national, regional, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, watershed groups, conservancies, outdoors enthusiasts, businesses, and individuals dedicated to planting trees to improve the condition of Pennsylvania waters. Trees clean and protect waterways, including drinking water sources, by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing stream banks, and improving soil quality. Simultaneously, they help cleanse the air of harmful contaminants and beautify communities. As the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership manager, Sieglitz will help ensure the success of the Partnership by synchronizing creative strategies that serve and diversify the partners, funders, agencies, and other priority audiences. Working closely with CBF’s Making History Campaign team, Sieglitz will also serve as the key internal point person to ensure
Brenda Sieglitz the Partnership activities are coordinated and communicated. For more than a decade, Sieglitz worked in the private sector, where she has focused on project management, business development initiatives, sales, and marketing. During that time, she created and led multiple marketing and other events centered on public-private partnerships, including leading the development and launch for a biodegradable food service disposables line in the Mid-Atlantic region. She resides in Mount Joy and is co-chair of Lancaster County Conservancy’s Riverlands Trail Festival. She has held leadership and mentor roles with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, Team Sarcoma Keepin’ it Kevin, and the National Parks Service. She is also a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist.
