“It’s become a (popular) event. It’s been really cold some years, and people still come out,” Williamson said, noting that many people are looking for fun outdoor events to attend because of the pandemic. “Being that it’s outside, that’s a big plus.” In past years, the Winter Fling has been a two-day event with a variety of activities held on Saturday at Nye Elementary School, including children’s games and entertainment. This year, the foundation decided to cancel the indoor event at the school. “The Saturday event was
Also performing in the square will be fire dancers from the Central PA Fire Tribe. A KIDZ Zone will be open from 7 to 9 p.m., where attendees can make their own s’mores in outdoor fire pits. There will also be crafts and a bounce house. “New this year is a game truck where they can play video games; masks will be required to enter,” said Williamson. There will be free hot chocolate available throughout the event, and representatives from local wineries and breweries will offer beverages to purchase.
Each year, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB), a statewide nonprofit, announces the recipients of its recognition program for individuals, government, organi-
zations, and businesses whose efforts support and strengthen the mission of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. The KPB Community Partner Award honors out-

inside, and it was packed; it was wall-to-wall people,” said Williamson. “We thought it would not be safe to do that this year.” The 2021 Winter Fling was also adapted because of the pandemic, but organizers are excited to bring back many of the activities this year “In 2021, all we did was have some ice sculptures on the square and on Main Street. You could walk around in your own time. It was very scaled down,” Williamson said. She noted that the Winter Fling was previously held on New Year’s Eve, but the event
moved to January so as not to interfere with New Year’s events in Hershey. “Get Frosted” was chosen as the theme of the Winter Fling. “Each year, the Hummelstown Community Foundation strives to bring new and different activities to the Fling,” Williamson added. For more information about the event, search for “Hummelstown Winter Fling” on Facebook. Those with questions can email winterfling17036@gmail.com. In the event of hazardous winter weather, the event will be canceled and not rescheduled.

A community open house at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SSBVM) Catholic School will kick off the school’s celebration of Catholic Schools Week (CSW), which will be observed from Sunday, Jan. 30, through Saturday, Feb. 5. The theme of this year’s observance is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” The open house at SSBVM School, located at 360 E. Water St., Middletown, will take place on Jan. 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. “The Jan. 30 open house is for prospective students and their families. We will have family ambassadors giving tours during that time frame,” explained principal Angela Warner. Earlier in the day on Jan. 30 and during Saturday night Mass on Jan. 29 at Seven Sorrows BVM Catholic Church, students will take part in the Mass, serving as lectors and altar servers and performing other duties. The school hand chime choir will also perform during the Masses. CSW will also give students an opportunity to take part in community service projects. They will collect donations of personal care items, including soap, shampoo and toothpaste, for the Catholic Charities of Harrisburg and gather items for staff members at the Middletown Home. “They have 150 staff members. We are going to put together (gift bags with) hand sanitizer, ChapStick and little snacks for the health care workers,” Warner said. The public is invited to contribute items by bringing donations to the office during school hours or placing them in an outdoor donation bin. The school has invited local heroes to enjoy coffee and
doughnuts on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Students are currently making thank you cards that they will present to the first responders for their service to the community. “We invited EMTs, the fire department and the police departments from Middletown, Elizabethtown and Steelton-Highspire,” Warner noted. The school’s National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 2. On Thursday, Feb. 3, there will be a Spelling Bee and a Faith Bee, the latter of which will test the students’ knowledge of the Catholic faith. The students who win the competitions at the school level will be eligible to move on and represent the school in a diocesan competition. “For our current families, there is an open house on Thursday evening,” Warner noted. “The students will travel through the classrooms, and we will have different activities for them to participate in. They will also meet their teachers for next year,” she said. Warner explained that the week is designed to showcase all that Catholic schools have to offer. “Our enrollment has been increasing this year, and Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic after our last open house in School fifth-graders are making cards for local November, we had (students) heroes who will visit during Catholic Schools Week. enroll in the middle of the year,” she shared. “Word is spreading about our strong education that we are able to provide even during this time of COVID.” SSBVM offers classes for preschoolers ages 3 and 4 and students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Low- to moderate-income working families and individuals can receive free tax preparation services from Monday, Jan. 31, to Friday, April 15, at sites in Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. The effort is part of Money in Your Pocket (MIYP), a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. The program, led by United Way of the Capital Region, aims to increase use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The EITC is a tax credit offered by the federal government to lowincome workers. Volunteers will prepare computerized, electronic returns through the Internal
Revenue Service’s Volunteer Tax Income Assistance (VITA) program, which is designed to provide lowincome families with help completing federal and state returns and obtaining all eligible tax credits. This year, people whose wage income is less than $58,000 may qualify for assistance. MIYP will also offer virtual assisted tax preparation through Touch-Free Taxes, which connects clients to trained volunteers who will prepare their taxes for free. Touch-Free Taxes can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet or computer. In conjunction with United Way Worldwide, MIYP will offer unassisted tax preparation through www.myfree taxes.com. More information is available at the aforemen-
tioned website. Since 2003, MIYP volunteers have filed 58,391 federal tax returns, resulting in more than $66.4 million returned to local families. The program has saved clients $9.2 million in tax preparation fees during that time. The average annual income for clients receiving free tax preparation services is $22,000. MIYP receives financial support from the PNC Foundation, the Truist Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service. For more information on the MIYP program or for a list of tax sites, contact Heidi Neuhaus at hneuhaus@uwcr.org or 717-724-4077 or visit www.uwcr.org/miyp.

A new year means a chance to refocus when it comes to the meals that people and their families are enjoying around the table. The Giant Company’s team of dietitians is ready with plenty of virtual nutrition classes to help home cooks bring more balance in January and ideas to show their heart some extra love in February. All nutrition classes are offered free and live via Zoom. On Mondays at 10:30 a.m., mini chefs age 6 and younger will enjoy a story and create nourishing snacks from polar bear toast to love bug fruit cups and penguin bagels. Families are invited to gather together in the kitchen for some baking fun on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. January classes will fea-

The Giant Company dietitians are also offering wellness workshops every Monday at 7 p.m. and Healthy Choices for Weight Control classes on Wednesdays at noon. Classes also include “Better for You” baking on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Attendees will learn how to prepare mango muffins with coconut lime streusel and lemon blueberry coffee cake. To help families on those busy nights, the dietitians will offer freezer meal prep classes on Thursdays at noon. Recipes will include Greek pasta bake and

Guidance On Cooking With Kids From a young age, many children can be taught everyday skills that will help them to become independent and responsible adults, and cooking is no exception. Using the following tips, parents can help children to begin learning kitchen skills early on. Parents should go into the cooking experience knowing there may be a mess, especially when young children are involved. Toddlers have not yet mastered manual dexterity, so they are bound to spill ingredients and drop items. A plastic tablecloth under the work area and on the floor can help catch whatever falls. Also, when youngsters assist, cooking will likely take more

Cut cookies are especially prominent during the holiday season, with some families having favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make baking sessions easier and help to ensure consistent results any time of year. Working on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top is recommended. Never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick. The dough can be rolled out between two sheets of baking or parchment paper to prevent it from sticking. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1/8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. The parchment paper also enables rolled-out dough to be easily transferred to a refrigerator

serrated butter knife with a rounded point. This task helps to teach knife skills that kids can develop more thoroughly in the future. Children can mix and add ingredients as well. As kids get older, parents can decide the right time to let them use the stove. Children can also work with dough, particularly rolling out pie crusts and pasta or making dumplings and filling them with vegetables. Many cookware retailers sell small rolling pins that are easy for kids to handle. Parents should let children read the recipes and be in charge of portioning out ingredients. Doing so reinforces classroom lessons
about temperature, ratios, and fractions. Around age 8 or 9, children can take on jobs like opening cans, scooping batter, pounding poultry, proofing yeast, skewering kabobs, and slicing bread, according to cooking educator Julie Negrin. Negrin noted that children ages 10 to 12 can start working independently in the kitchen as long as an adult is in the home. Ultimately, children can cook without close supervision. Children also can be involved in cooking by helping to draft shopping lists and taking trips to the supermarket. Involving them in these tasks shows kids the complete process of making a meal.
or elsewhere. When rolling out dough, portioning the dough into a few smaller amounts allows it to roll out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily. Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. The dough should be refrigerated for as long as possible, ideally an hour or more - even overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be. Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness. Cookie cutters should be dipped in flour with each cut. It is a good idea to work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out designs. When cutting, it is a good idea to maximize space
and avoid scraps and rerolling. Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter is used, the cookie should be cut by pressing straight down. The cookie cutter should not be twisted or jiggled when being used. Doughs with a high butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters. If cut cookies have gotten warmer, placing them in the freezer for a few minutes will help them firm up again before baking. This will help to ensure the cookies will not spread or become misshapen while baking. Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail may help produce better results.
Cookie-Cutting Tips Baking is a tradition in many households, and goodies include cakes, pies, and cookies. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today.

time than usual, so adults should set aside extra preparation and cooking time. Parents should also teach children proper hygiene to prevent foodborne illnesses. Everyone involved in cooking, including children, should wash their hands before cooking begins and after handling foods, particularly raw meat and poultry. Hair should be tied back, and separate preparation surfaces should be designated for produce and for meats. Parents should consider age and maturity levels when assigning tasks in the kitchen. Even children as young as 3 can chop soft vegetables or fruits if they are provided a

Good Deeds from pg 9 school and needed help with the many assignments he had to complete. Cherry said that without being asked, Silas helped the other student complete his work during 11th period and after school. In December, a pair of fifth-graders at South Hanover Elementary School were recognized. Sloan Osevala and Sophia Warble were nominated by their school counselor, Liza Kalloz. Kalloz said that after participating in a Helping Hands activity where students made disaster relief bags for the Red Cross, Sloan and Sophia were inspired to make and sell bracelets to raise money for
the Red Cross. For their efforts, each of the four students was rewarded with a gift card to Target; a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate; and a Subway coupon. The program sponsors were Hixon & Simko in November and the Hummelstown Lions Club in December. The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts.
