Pennsylvania has a network of shared-ride service providers dedicated to keeping older adults mobile, safe, and engaged in their community. This transportation program allows citizens age 65 and up to ride for free on a local, fixed-route service whenever local public transportation is operating.

Additionally, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and transit agencies, PennDOT recently developed an online tool called Find My Ride, which allows older drivers to access free ride services online. Find My Ride is designed to allow transit agencies to process applications more efficiently, so users can access benefits more quickly. Find My Ride is available at www.find myride.penndot.pa.gov.

While every person ages differently, aging typically brings certain - sometimes subtle - physical, visual, and cognitive changes that could impair a person’s ability to

drive safely. Older drivers and their families should work together to identify potential issues that may affect driving, outline courses of action to assist the older driver, and plan for when it is time to hang up the keys.

Signs that can indicate it may be time to limit or stop driving altogether include feeling uncomfortable, fearful, or nervous when driving; unexplained dents or scrapes on the car or on fences, mailboxes, or garage doors; frequently getting lost and frequent “close calls” such as almost crashing; slower response times, particularly to unexpected situations; difficulty paying attention to signs or staying in one’s lane of traffic; and trouble judging gaps at intersections or highway entrance and exit ramps.

Older drivers and their loved ones are encouraged to review PennDOT’s Seniors Driving Safely publication series, which can be downloaded for free at

www.penndot.pa.gov under Travel in PA by selecting Safety and then Traffic Safety & Driver Topics. These publications are intended to help older drivers assess their abilities and to offer guidance on next steps if a driver’s medical condition is reported to PennDOT. The series also includes a publication designed to guide family and friends of older drivers in conversations about deciding to stop driving, as well as information for health care providers on PennDOT’s medical reporting program.

Several safe-driving habits, which should be routine at any age, may be especially useful to older drivers. Drivers should plan ahead and make lengthy car trips during daylight hours. Morning may be best because people may not be as tired as they are in the afternoon. Drivers should avoid driving during rush hour, if possible, and avoid roads that tend to get con-

gested. When driving long distances, especially in winter, drivers should call ahead for weather and road condition updates. Drivers should look far down the road and make adjustments before encountering problems that may involve other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, or animals. Maintaining a safe speed is important and depends on what the road is like, how well the driver can see, how much traffic there is, and how fast traffic is moving. Drivers should keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of them. The “Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual” advises that drivers always keep a 4second gap between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them.

Additional information on senior driver safety and mobility resources is available at both www.dmv.pa.gov/Driver -Services/Mature-Drivers and www.aging.pa.gov under Programs and Services and then Transportation.

PennDOT Offers Safety Message

PennDOT urges motorists to avoid travel, if possible, when snowy and icy conditions arise. If travel is necessary, motorists should use caution, reduce speeds, and be aware of changing weather conditions.

To help make decisions regarding winter travel, motorists are encouraged to “Know Before You Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com.

511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. Users can also see the status of plow trucks and travel alerts along a specific route using the “Check My Route” tool.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts.

Drivers should prepare or restock their emergency kits with items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger, and a

small snow shovel. Motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families have, such as baby supplies, extra medication, and pet supplies.

When winter weather occurs, drivers should be extra cautious around operating snow removal equipment. When encountering a plow truck, drivers should stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember that the main plow is wider than the truck. Drivers should be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other traffic. When a plow truck is traveling toward a vehicle, the driver should move as far away from the center of the road as is safely possible and remember that snow can obscure the actual snow plow width.

Additionally, drivers should never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a plow train. The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles. Drivers should never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the operator

cannot see, and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting drifts or heavy snowpack.

Also, drivers should keep their lights on to help the operator see their vehicle better. Drivers should also remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every time a vehicle’s wipers are on due to inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded that the law requires drivers to remove accumulated ice or snow from their vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof, within 24 hours after the storm has ended. This applies to all vehicles, including commercial vehicles. Drivers in violation of the law are subject to a fine of $50. Additionally, motorists can be cited up to $1,500 if snow or ice is dislodged and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious injury.

For more information on safe winter travel, an emergency kit checklist, and information on PennDOT’s winter operations, including a video, visit www.penndot.gov/winter. Additional winter driving and other highway safety information is available at www.penndot.gov/safety.

Strategies For Organization

When the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices. There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact. Whatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.

First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other tracking tool. A digital to-do list manager, for example, enables people to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts

LBC Names Reed Alumnus Of The Year

Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School has named Calvin Reed the 2022 Alumnus of the Year. Reed, who earned his bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies from LBC in 1978, has served in ministry for 40 years.

After graduating from LBC, Reed went on to earn a Master of Divinity and also took Doctor of Ministry courses at Biblical Theological Seminary, now Missio Seminary, in Philadelphia. Reed also previously served as chairman of the board at Biblical Theological Seminary. He is making plans for retirement after four decades at Lebanon Bible Fellowship Church (LBFC).

After completing his graduate work, Reed began serving within Bible Fellowship Church, first in Reading, then in Lebanon. Under Reed’s longtime leadership, LBFC is “committed to equipping the saints and reaching the lost with the Gospel so that men and women can become committed disciples of Jesus Christ, in fellowship with God and one another.” As the

St. Mark’s

and needs as they come up.

Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.

It is important to conquer clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and organizing when clutter has gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.

Another strategy is to categorize emails. Individuals can utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages

that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing, such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the time-consuming task of scrolling through a full inbox.

When bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.

“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school. The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day. Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.

senior pastor at LBFC, Reed works with two LBC alumni on the pastoral staff, and multiple LBC alumni and current students call LBFC their church home.

While at LBC, Reed served as the Student Council chaplain for a year as well as the junior class chaplain. He participated in choir and Wayfarers, a traveling singing group of about eight students. He was also part of the Pastoral Interest Fellowship for three years, led tours for prospective students through the Student Service Corps and was a student representative on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education team when the college was working toward accreditation.

Calvin and his wife, Bonnie, have three daughters and three sons-in-law, all of whom attended or graduated from LBC | Capital. He also credits LBC Bible and theology professor Harold Kime for helping to prepare him for his time in ministry. At LBC, Reed shared, he was taught how to formulate argumentative outlines of Scripture, which he still uses in his preparation for preaching.

Over his ministry, Reed taught Sunday school and preached on both Sunday mornings and evenings on a regular basis. It is estimated that he has prepared and delivered over 5,000 messages and lessons. In addition, he has done extensive studies in the area of expository preaching.

some note-reading ability are recommended for the vocal choirs. Rhythmic proficiency and flexibility in ringing different bell positions is beneficial for the handbell ensemble. The adult choir currently rehearses on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., after the 9 a.m. worship service. The youth choir practices during children’s church, and the bell choir rehearses on Thursdays at

Lower Dauphin Students Honored For Good Deeds

A second-grader at East Hanover Elementary School and a junior at Lower Dauphin High School were recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police Department for doing the right thing.

Eleventh-grader Hunter Gundy was recognized for designing and making multiple devices and tools, such as ramps and stools, for his grandfather, who has mobility issues. Hunter was nominated by teacher Audrey Stoothoff.

At East Hanover Elementary School, Chase Schroeder was recognized for being positive, thoughtful, kind, empathetic and encouraging. His teacher is Jennifer Solomon.

The students were rewarded with a gift card to Target and a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate. This month’s program sponsor was Shellsville VFW Post 9639 Auxiliary.

The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. For more information, contact program director Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org.
