Ministry Dedicated To Serving The Homeless BY FRANCINE FULTON
“This is the ministry the Lord put on my heart years ago - to share His love with people,” said Kathy Hedenberg Schnee when describing Spend Yourself Ministries, which she founded as an outreach to the homeless. “I do want to share the love of Christ with people, but I don’t want to leave them empty-handed. You can’t pat them on the head, pray for them and then keep going.” As part of her ministry, Hedenberg Schnee, a resident of Hershey, regularly visits the homeless population in Harrisburg, where she gives out whatever items are needed most, whether it be a blanket, a winter coat or a hat and gloves. When Hedenberg Schnee meets a homeless person with a particular need, she posts his or her photo on the “Spend Yourself ” group Facebook page along with a detailed description of what item that person has asked for. After creating the post, community members generally
help to provide what is needed. For example, one person recently requested a large duffle bag, while another asked for a pair of boots. Both those needs were met. Hedenberg Schnee was also able to provide a homeless man with a bus ticket back to his home in Alabama. Hedenberg Schnee founded a nonprofit ministry 15 years ago called Joseph’s Coats 4 Kids that provided winter coats to children in need in the Harrisburg region. That ministry evolved into Spend Yourself. “Because I have a heart for children, I founded Joseph’s Coats 4 Kids so kids would have new coats and clothes for back to school. (The ministry was named after the biblical story of) Jacob, who loved his son Joseph so much that he gave him a beautiful coat,” Hedenberg Schnee explained. “I changed the name of (the ministry) about six or seven years ago. “ The current name of the ministry is based on Isaiah 58:10, which reads, “And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry, and satisfy the needs of
the oppressed, then your light will rise is always a need for blankets and in the darkness, and your night will socks year-round,” she said. “Socks and underwear are the only (donated become like the noonday.” Before having health concerns, items) that have to be brand new. Hedenberg Schnee spent New Year’s Everything donated that is used and Eve sleeping outside for five consec- in good condition is a blessing.” She said those who are unable to utive years in an effort to raise awareness of homelessness while donate goods are asked to keep the collecting donations of blankets and ministry and the homeless populawinter coats. Currently, she visits tion in their prayers. Harrisburg on Saturday mornings to minister to the homeless, sometimes accompanied by a friend. “They know me and know my car, and I give out what I have,” she said. Prior to COVID-19, Hedenberg Schnee also helped the homeless in New York City. “I spent a lot of time in Harlem, New York City, because I have friends who have a ministry up there,” she stated. “When things are safer again, I will go back.” Those who would like to help Hedenberg Schnee with her ministry are asked to visit the Facebook page to see what items are needed. “There Kathy Hedenberg Schnee is the founder of Spend Yourself Ministries, which serves the homeless population in Harrisburg.

Dungeons & Dragons Made Simple, a family program on the library’s Facebook Live page, will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26. offer a bi-monthly virtual family book group series called Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors. The grant provides for families to read and discuss books written by authors and illustrators who are black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). The first discussion will be about “I Am Enough by Grace Byers and will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. Books will be provided through the grant for families to keep. Library staff will lead the discussions during the bimonthly Zoom meetings. Neill Hartley will return to deliver a virtual program titled “Songs and Letters from World War l at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. Hartley will present a one-man show on Zoom featuring letters and iconic songs from World War I. Performances To Celebrate Black History Month In celebration of Black History Month, Dauphin County Commissioners Jeff Haste, Mike Pries, and George R. Hartwick III will present an original digital performance episode by Sharia Benn and partnership program of Sankofa African American Theatre Company and Gamut Theatre Group. The program is titled “Do You Know Me? Gamut and Sankofa, in partnership with Dauphin County, produce a new play each spring and typically present it live, in-person at Gamut Theatre with multiple student matinee performances. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sankofa and Gamut converted the event to a virtual program that can be used by teachers in online classrooms. Sponsored by Highmark Blue Shield and co-directed by Benn and Melissa Nicholson, “Do You Know Me? connects audiences to Harrisburg’s rich history of abolitionists and civil rights activists who worked to end slavery, secure the vote, and
challenge segregation. Local students and professional artists share poetry, letters, and more by influential local and national African American leaders. Benn and Nicholson have been working with Dauphin County students Jade Jarrell of Capital Area School of the Arts, Lunden McClain of Central Dauphin East High School, and Najuma Norman of Capital Area School of the Arts, who perform live monologues filmed on the Gamut stage. This performance is free to all Dauphin County high schools in February and March, accompanied by live talk-back discussions on Zoom. To register a school for this event, readers may contact Gamut Theatre at 717-238-4111. This digital performance episode will also be offered to the public for two special viewings on Sunday, March 14, at 4 p.m. and Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the public performances may be purchased at www.gamuttheatre.org.

Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… 4 It can take your focus away on enjoying your life… like spending time with your children or grandchildren… 4 It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… 4 It can ruin your travel plans… 4 And it can take away your ability to live life… having to rely on others… or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting… not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica… it’s our specialty.
So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00 PM. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 4 The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… 4 The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… 4 A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) 4 How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… 4 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at 717-210-9945. Ask for Itzel... When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event… so if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. No cost to you… As a Special Bonus… the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a free copy of our book “Back to Normal: Natural Healing without Medications, Injections and Surgery”. Looking forward to seeing you there, Chad Madden, Physical Therapist Madden Physical Therapy – Paid Advertisement –

Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center (HCPAC) has announced recent and continuing fundraising activities and volunteer opportunities. On Nov. 14, 2020, HCPAC hosted a Grand Reopening Cabaret fundraiser. This live event featured five seasoned vocalists, parent and director testimonials, and a mission presentation by the ministry’s executive director, Sherry Webb. A 20-minute sampling of this event is available by searching for
“HCPAC Cabaret Fundraiser Highlights” on YouTube. Each Christmas, in lieu of a personal gift from the HCPAC board of directors, Webb asks that a building project be completed. Webb’s Christmas wish in 2020 was for two of the aging cast bathrooms to be remodeled. So far, HCPAC has raised $1,000 of the approximately $2,500 that it estimates is needed for the project. Donations may be made at https://thehcpac.org/give/ support/. HCPAC is also in need of
volunteers who can provide skilled labor. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. for demolition; Friday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. for construction; Saturday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for construction; Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. for installation of stall partitions and fixtures; and Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. for finishing touches. For details on how to sign up to volunteer, readers may email Webb at swebb@thehcpac.org.

Joke of the Week Here are some pick-up lines. Some are romantic or sweet, but most are just funny. (Tip to you guys out there: Pick-up lines don’t usually work.) Can you give me directions to your heart? I’ve seemed to have lost myself in your eyes. Do you believe in love at first sight ... or should I walk by you again? Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off? If I had a rose for every time I thought of you, I would be walking through my garden forever. If beauty were time, you’d be eternity. You look like a girl who has heard every pick-up line in the book, so what’s one more going to hurt? Baby, you’re so sweet, you could put Hershey’s out of business. If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together. Excuse me is your last name Gillette? ... Because you are the best a man can get!

Dunkin’ Opens Drive-Through-Only Restaurant Dunkin’ officially unveiled its next-generation drivethrough-only restaurant, its first in central Pennsylvania, located at 101 N. Larkspur Drive, Palmyra. The drivethrough-only Dunkin’ restaurant offers a dual drivethrough and a walk-up window to serve guests. Elements of the new restaurant experience in Palmyra include a modern design and a faster drive-through experience. DD Perks Rewards members who order ahead via Dunkin’s mobile app can receive their mobile orders at the drive-through. Dunkin’s signature cold beverages are now served at the drive-through through a tap system serving eight consistently cold beverages such as coffees, iced teas, cold brew coffee and nitro-infused cold brew coffee. Crew members also use flavor-maximizing espresso machines to make hand-crafted beverages to order. Dunkin’ has also introduced an area dedicated to mobile pickups at the walk-up window so that members of the DD Perks Rewards program who
order ahead via Dunkin’s mobile app can receive their mobile orders faster than ever before. The new Dunkin’ is a DD Green Achievement restaurant, which is designed to save 25% more energy compared to a standard Dunkin’ restaurant. The 1,500-square-foot restaurant employs approximately 20 crew members and is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. It also offers complimentary Wi-Fi. Currently, the majority of Dunkin’ restaurants across the country remain open and have put enhanced preventative health and safety measures in place. Guests can order and pay without contact on the Dunkin’ app for a quick, graband-go experience. Including the new restaurant in Palmyra, Dunkin’ franchisee BJ Patel currently owns and operates eight Dunkin’ locations throughout Pennsylvania. The Giant Company introduced the Giant Direct brand in February 2019 when it debuted its first ecommerce hub in the city of Lancaster. In July 2019, the company opened its 100th pickup location, in Carlisle.
