Low- to moderate-income working families can receive free tax preparation services through Saturday, April 15, at sites in Dauphin County. The effort is part of Money in Your Pocket (MIYP), a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families.

The program, led by United Way of the Capital Region, aims to increase use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The EITC is a tax credit offered by the federal government to supplement wages for low-income workers.

Volunteers will prepare computerized, electronic returns through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which is designed to provide low-income families with help completing federal and state returns and obtaining all eligible tax credits. This

New Educational Partnership Set

Messiah University, Grantham, has announced a new educational partnership with Messiah Lifeways, a nonprofit organization that provides a comprehensive network of senior community services and residential communities.

The partnership between the two entities will facilitate collaboration on the training and development of the next generation of certified nursing assistants (CNAs); provide continuing education opportunities for Messiah Lifeways employees; allow Messiah University students to serve, garner professional experiences in a long-term care setting, and gain an understanding of ministry in the aging population; and work together on mutually beneficial opportunities for research that advances evidence-based practice.

Central to this new agreement is addressing the cur-

rent crisis in staffing needs in long-term care and nursing homes. The opportunities to support and work in the senior living industry are more needed today than ever before. LeadingAge, a nationwide community of nonprofit aging services providers and other mission-driven organizations serving older adults, suggests that as many as 8.2 million staffing jobs in long-

term care will need to be filled by 2028 as the U.S. population ages.

Messiah University and Messiah Lifeways have collaborated throughout their respective histories. Both institutions trace their roots back to the Brethren in Christ Church and to Harrisburg. To learn more, visit www.messiah.edu or www.messiahlifeways.org.

AHA Advocates Hands-only CPR

During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn hands-only CPR.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next, place one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.

Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist.

Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart.org/handsonlycpr.

Open Stage To Present “Into The Woods”

Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg, will present “Into the Woods” on its Capital Blue Cross Main Stage on select dates from Saturday, Feb. 18, to Saturday, March 11. A show on Thursday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. will be an ASL-interpretated performance. There will be a lobby talk post-performance discussion following the 2 p.m. show on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Directed by producing artistic director Stuart Landon, this production reimagines the Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The musical centers on a baker and his wife and their quest to break a curse that left them childless. The show intertwines multiple fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and explores the con-

sequences of quests and wishes. The main characters include Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jack from “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Landon noted that Open Stage has put a new spin on the show, including setting the action in an abandoned library. “Into the Woods” has a cast of 10 actors, accompanied by a pianist.

Open Stage’s production features Robert and Alexis Campbell as The Baker and Baker’s Wife; Chloe Acquaviva as Cinderella and Granny; Keel Warner as Rapunzel’s Prince, the Stepsister and Milky White; Chris Gibson as the Narrator and Mysterious Man; Tyler Shadle as Jack and Steward; Gabrielle Dina as Little Red and Rapunzel; Chris

Winter Fire Safety Tips

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has urged members of the public to use added caution when heating their homes during the winter months. NFPA offered several tips and guidelines for safely heating a home during this time of year.

Heating equipment and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Anything that can burn should be kept at least 3 feet away from all heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters. The right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer, should always be used for fuel-burning space heaters. A 3-foot “kid-free zone” should be created around

open fires and space heaters. People should make sure their space heaters are in good working order and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Portable heaters should be turned off when leaving the room or going to bed.

In addition, fireplaces should have a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container, which should be placed outside at least 10 feet away from a home. All fuelburning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Individuals should make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are located throughout the home and test them

monthly to ensure they are working properly.

If there is a gas smell in a gas heater, the appliance should not be lit. Residents should leave the home immediately and call the local fire department or gas company.

NFPA offers a wealth of home heating safety tips, information, and resources to

help better educate the public about ways to safely heat a home. In addition, NFPA’s “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign with the U.S. Fire Administration works to promote knowledge of a host of winter safety issues,
