Currently, she visits Harrisburg on Saturday mornings to minister to the homeless, sometimes accompanied by a friend. “They know me and know my car, and I give out what I have,” she said. Prior to COVID-19, Hedenberg Schnee also helped the homeless in New York City. “I spent a lot of time in Harlem, New York City, because I have friends who have a ministry up there,” she stated. “ When things are safer again, I will go back.” Those who would like to help Hedenberg Schnee with her ministry are asked to visit the Facebook page to see what items are needed. “There is always a need for blankets and socks year-round,” she said. “Socks and underwear are the only (donated items) that have to be brand new. Everything donated that is used and in good condition is a blessing.” She said those who are unable to donate goods are asked to keep the min- Kathy Hedenberg Schnee is the founder of Spend istry and the homeless population in Yourself Ministries, which serves the homeless population in Harrisburg. their prayers.

“This is the ministry the Lord put on my heart years ago - to share His love with people,” said Kathy Hedenberg Schnee when describing Spend Yourself Ministries, which she founded as an outreach to the homeless. “I do want to share the love of Christ with people, but I don’t want to leave them empty-handed. You can’t pat them on the head, pray for them and then keep going.” As part of her ministry, Hedenberg Schnee, a resident of Hershey, regularly visits the homeless population in Harrisburg, where she gives out whatever items are needed most, whether it be a blanket, a winter coat or a hat and gloves. When Hedenberg Schnee meets a homeless person with a particular need, she posts his or her photo on the “Spend Yourself ” group Facebook page along with a detailed description of what item that person has asked for. After creating the post, community members generally help to provide what is needed. For example, one person recently requested a large duffle bag, while
another asked for a pair of boots. Both those needs were met. Hedenberg Schnee was also able to provide a homeless man with a bus ticket back to his home in Alabama. Hedenberg Schnee founded a nonprofit ministry 15 years ago called Joseph’s Coats 4 Kids that provided winter coats to children in need in the Harrisburg region. That ministry evolved into Spend Yourself. “Because I have a heart for children, I founded Joseph’s Coats 4 Kids so kids would have new coats and clothes for back to school. (The ministry was named after the biblical story of) Jacob, who loved his son Joseph so much that he gave him a beautiful coat,” Hedenberg Schnee explained. “I changed the name of (the ministry) about six or seven years ago. “ The current name of the ministry is based on Isaiah 58:10, which reads, “And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry, and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Before having health concerns, Hedenberg Schnee spent New Year’s Eve

unique experiences donated by local supporting businesses, and viewers can offer donations to help support Gretna Theatre begin its next season. The theater has had to furlough nearly all its employees and delay productions on a massive scale. It continues serving the community as a nonprofit through adapted arts education programs offered virtually to schools and community centers. Readers may visit www.gretna.givesmart.com to register for the event, preview auction items, and see which local businesses are supporting the future of Gretna Theatre. The one-hour performance will also be broadcast on Gretna Theatre’s Facebook page. As a way to upgrade the experience while offering support to Gretna Theatre’s education programs, viewers can purchase a VIP guest pass, which comes with a handcurated appetizer box from Graze Lancaster available for pickup.
“Touch-Free Taxes” Program Available Low- to moderate-income working families and individuals in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties can receive free virtual tax preparation services through Thursday, April 15, via the new TouchFree Taxes program. TouchFree Taxes can be done from a computer, tablet or smartphone and connects clients to trained volunteers that will prepare their taxes for free through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Tax Income Assistance (VITA) program. VITA is designed to provide low-income families with help completing federal and state returns and obtaining tax credits. This year, people who earned wages of less than $57,000 may be eligible for assistance. Touch-Free Taxes is part of the Money in Your Pocket
Campaign, a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. The program, led by United Way of the Capital Region, aims to increase use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The EITC is a tax refund offered by the federal government to supplement wages for low-income workers. In addition to Touch-Free Taxes, Money in Your Pocket and United Way Worldwide will also offer unassisted tax preparation online. More information is available at www.myfreetaxes.com. For more information on Touch-Free Taxes or Money in Your Pocket, readers may visit www.uwcr.org/miyp or contact miyp@uwc.org or 717-724-4077.

The Humanities Grand Rounds History of Medicine Lecture at Penn State School of Medicine will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 24, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Moya Bailey, Ph.D., will discuss “Race, Gender, and Region in the Flexner Report.” Bailey is a professor at Northeastern University. Bailey will highlight the reconceptualization of Southern medical students and their institutions that resulted from the Flexner Report in 1910. Emory School of Medicine was formed in the wake of the report, and she will explore its creation and student population with special attention to the integration of female and black students in medical schools nationally. Bailey is an MLK Visiting Scholar at MIT for the 2020-21 academic year. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, including the Zoom link, readers may contact Lori Ricard at lricard@pennstatehealth.psu.edu.
Thousands of audience members did not get the opportunity to visit Mount Gretna last summer to enjoy professional theater performances. Now, after a year of dark stages, Gretna Theatre will kick off its 2021 season with a free livestreamed performance for the community. On Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., Gretna Theatre will present a program titled “Still Here.” Performances will highlight some of the theater’s past productions and feature prior Gretna Theatre actors. The theme touches on the idea that even though audiences cannot meet in person, Gretna Theatre is still present to entertain, engage, educate, and transform - just in new and different ways. This evening serves as a fundraiser replacement for the canceled October gala and summer season, where the organization could not obtain its traditional revenue. The performance will be accompanied by a virtual auction of

Random Thought I don’t mean to brag, but I put together a puzzle in one day and the box said 2-4 years. Recipe of the Week Ground Beef Casserole This ground beef casserole recipe is super easy to throw together and feeds a crowd! It’s good comfort food and uses simple ingredients. Ingredients 1 pound uncooked penne (or any other kind of pasta) 1/2 medium onion chopped 1 pound extra lean ground beef 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 clove garlic minced 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce (or any other kind of pasta sauce) salt and pepper to taste 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Directions 1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and move the rack to the middle position. Grease a 9-by-13inch baking dish. 2. Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the penne in it for 10 minutes. The pasta should be slightly underdone so it doesn’t get mushy. See Chatter pg 12

Hi, everyone! Ooooh, March is just around the corner and I have the fever! (Spring fever, that is!) I can’t wait to sit in the sunshine on my front porch, listen to the little birdies singing, watch the cute baby bunnies hopping in the yard, see the colorful flowers blooming. Oh, I hope that groundhog was wrong and spring comes soon!

New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. • Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? • Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? • Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? • Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? • Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? • Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton. If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “Had trouble walking through the woods while shooting archery. I am now able to walk without tripping on branches and up and down stairs. I had a problem lifting my right leg and getting up from the floor while sitting. Now I can get up with no problem!” - Rich A. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call our office to register at 717-210-9945. Ask for Itzel... To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 20 seats… and seats fill up FAST. The first 10 registrants will receive a FREE copy of the Top 3 Exercises for Knee Pain when they come to the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again. Chad Madden Physical Therapist R067918

Chatter from pg 9 3. Add the oil, beef, and onion to a skillet. Sauté over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat while it cooks, for 10 minutes. Once cooking is well underway, stir in the garlic. Spoon out excess fat if needed. 4. Stir in the marinara sauce and warm through. Season with salt and pepper as needed. 5. Drain the pasta and pour it into the baking dish. Pour the beef mixture over the pasta and toss until combined. Top with an even layer of the cheese. To make the dish extra cheesy, stir in an additional half cup of cheese prior to topping it with the rest of the cheese. 6. Bake for 10 minutes, uncovered, until the cheese is nicely melted. Either serve the dish or broil it for a few minutes to brown the cheese a bit. Serve immediately.

Tip of the Week If you find that your tomato sauce or soup is too salty, just add a little brown sugar. It will neutralize some of the salty taste.
