The vintage jazz classics played by the ensemble date back to the turn of the 20th century. Among the repertoire are several arrangements by noted bassist and band leader Ed Wise, a mainstay of the New Orleans music scene. A freewill offering will be received. Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, recently announced that it received a grant from Walmart Giving. The program at Hope Springs Farm was nominated by the team at the Harrisburg Walmart Store. The Walmart Foundation provides grants and donations to support local communities. This grant will be used for the horticulture and cooking programs at Hope Springs Farm. The grant will aid the staff by purchasing gardening and cooking supplies that will allow them to prepare and conduct activities with adults who have intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism, who are called “growers” at Hope Springs Farm. Through the horticulture program, the growers learn how to care for the plants and they start growing vegetables and fruit from seeds over winter in the greenhouse located on the farm’s property. The flowers and food grown on the farm are taken home by the growers to enjoy with friends and family. Some of the food grown is also used in the cooking program. Horticulture therapist Nora Palmer from Delaware Valley University leads the growers in various activities, including plant bingo, garden notebooks, a fall scavenger hunt, and nature suncatchers. Horticulture therapy

aims to improve cognitive abilities, socialization, language skills, and task initiation. The cooking program allows the growers to continue to build the life skills of cooking and baking. Harvests from the garden are used in addition to other supplies obtained through donations or shopping at various grocery stores. The program offers growers a sense of accomplishment from following and making a recipe. Growers create a variety of food items, including soup, frittatas, pumpkin rolls, and more. Opened in 2005 by Nina and Neil Rovner, Hope Springs Farm provides a day program designed to allow growers to maximize their abilities. The farm features alpacas, chickens, sheep, horses, goats, and pigs. More than 60 adults are enrolled in its day program. White Lie Cake If you have ever told a white lie, you are going to love this especially all the ladies who bake for church events. Alice Grayson was to bake a cake for the Baptist Church ladies’ group bake sale in Tuscaloosa, but she forgot to do it until the last minute. She remembered it the morning of the bake sale, and after rummaging through cabinets she found an angel food cake mix and quickly made it while drying her hair, dressing, and helping her son, Bryan, pack up for Scout camp. But when Alice took the cake from the oven, the center had dropped flat and the cake was horribly disfigured. She said, “Oh dear, there’s no time to bake another cake.” This cake was so important to Alice because she did so want to fit in at her new church and in her new community of new friends. So, being inventive, she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake. Alice found it in the bathroom - a roll of toilet paper. She plunked it in and then covered it with icing. Not only did the finished product look beautiful, it looked perfect! Before she left the house to drop the cake by the church and head for work, Alice woke her daughter, Amanda, and gave her some money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale the minute it opened at 9:30 and to buy that cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale, she found that the attractive, perfect cake had already been sold. Amanda grabbed her cell phone and called her mom. Alice was horrified. She was beside herself. Everyone would know; what would they think? “Oh my!” she wailed. She would be ostracized, talked about, ridiculed. All night Alice lay awake in bed thinking about people pointing their fingers at her and talking

Broil for about 5 minutes, until about her behind her back. The next day, Alice promised herself that she would try not to think about the cake, and she would attend the fancy luncheon/bridal shower at the home of a friend of a friend and try to have a good time. Alice did not really want to attend because the hostess was a snob who more than once had looked down her nose at the fact that Alice was a single parent and not from the founding families of Tuscaloosa. However, she could not think of a believable excuse to stay home. The meal was elegant, the company was definitely upper crust old South, and to Alice’s horror, the CAKE in question was presented for dessert! Alice felt the blood drain from her body when she saw the cake. She started out of her chair to rush to tell her hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, the mayor’s wife said, “What a beautiful cake!” Alice, who was still stunned, sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess (who was a prominent church member) say, “Thank you, I baked it myself.” Alice smiled and thought to herself, “GOD is good.”

cooked through. Enjoy! Tip of the Week Want to make your windows “frosted” for more privacy? Add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt to 1 cup beer. Brush on the window! Let dry. To remove the frost, just wash off with ammonia! This is really neat. Just remember to cover any wood or furniture nearby, because this drips! Fact of the Week Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters, and half dollars have notches, while pennies and nickels do not? The U.S. Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters, and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren’t notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave. Joke of the Week A tourist drove up to a rundown old country store in Tennessee. There was a hound dog laying in the yard. An old man in coveralls was sitting on the porch. “Excuse me, sir, but does your dog bite?” the tourist asked. The old man replied, “Nope.” So the tourist stepped out of his car. The dog ran over snarling and growling and bit him 16 times on both arms and legs. As the dog was dragging him off under the house and the tourist was flailing around in the dust, he yelled, “I thought you said your dog didn’t bite!” The old man replied, “Ain’t my dog.” Thank You Thanks to Audean Bryan of Royalton for the piece about the Little White Lie! Great story! Thanks to Colleen Arehart of Royalton for the Random Thought! I love that kind of humor! Thanks to Mike Donar of Middletown for the joke! Loved it! Food for Thought “God gave us memories that we might have June roses in the December of our lives.” -James M. Barrie

Police Officers Receive Training In Pennsylvania’s latest effort to bolster highway safety, six state troopers and five municipal police officers have completed training and expect to be certified by the International Association of Chiefs of Police as drug recognition experts or DREs. This is the 21st training class conducted in Pennsylvania. The Drug Evaluation and Classification Program is a national effort to train police officers to determine when an individual has been driving under the influence of drugs and to identify the type of drug causing the impairment. The program also trains officers to recognize whether an individual is suffering from a medical condition rather than drug impairment. DREs are trained to determine if a driver is under the influence of illegal drugs, prescription drugs, or any other substance that impairs a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Motorists may be incapable of driving safely and can be charged with driving under the influence after ingesting any intoxicating substance, whether the substance is legal or illegal, prescribed by a physician, or purchased over the counter. The program, which was developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and approved by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), includes classroom study and hands-on exercises for participating officers. As part of the training, participants are required to conduct evaluations of actual subjects impaired by drugs. In 2004, Pennsylvania became the 39th U.S. state to have a Drug Evaluation and Classification Program approved by the IACP. With the additional officers obtaining certification, the commonwealth will have 104 troopers and 94 municipal police officers certified as DREs. Local law enforcement officers who completed the training include Trooper Eric Smith, Troop H, Harrisburg, and municipal police officers Patrolman Shawn Moore, Swatara Township Police Department, and Officer Alexandria Hahn, Northern Lancaster Regional Police Department. For more information about the DRE Program, readers may visit www.decp.org.

Papson Speaks To Local Club Donald Papson, president and executive director of The M.S. Hershey Foundation, spoke to the Hershey Rotary Club on Jan. 27 about the role and mission of The M.S. Hershey Foundation and its impact on the Hershey community. The foundation was established by Milton Hershey in 1935 to provide educational and cultural opportunities for the citizens of Derry Township.
