LDHS Teachers Complete “24 In 24 Challenge” BY FRANCINE FULTON
hen Lower Dauphin High School (LDHS) teachers Scott Payonk and Michael Layser decided to hold a fundraiser for the school’s Mini-THON, of which they are co-advisers, they set a goal to raise $2,424, representing the fact that they planned to run 24 miles in 24 hours to complete the 24 In 24 Challenge. Not only did they meet their goal of completing the running challenge, but they also raised a total of $6,249 for Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization that helps pay for treatments for children with pediatric cancer. Layser, who is the ceramics teacher at LDHS, and Payonk, the special education teacher, ran 1 mile every hour on the hour for 24 consecutive hours from noon on Dec. 23, 2020, through noon on Dec. 24, 2020. The LDHS community was invited to support their efforts by donating money for each lap they completed. “(Layser) ran on the track at the high school and I ran from my apartment,” Payonk explained. “Basically, he ran a mile around the track, and I ran a loop that I set up around my apartment. I ran into Hummelstown and looped back to my place.” “The last four hours were the toughest,” he added. “It started rain-

ing and made it a little difficult. As the fatigue set in, it really got hard.” Payonk said the 24 In 24 Challenge was held in lieu of the LDHS Jingle Jam 5K planned at Cassel Brookside Stables in Hummelstown that had to be canceled because of the pandemic. “We collected all monies (for the 24 In 24 Challenge) via a website,” he noted. “(The donations) came from the LDHS community, students and family members, and we donated (as well). We were thinking that we may break $3,000; we never thought we would raise more than $6,000.” Payonk said that because of COVID-19 there were no crowds cheering on the runners, but some
people did provide encouragement. “Some people throughout town knew me and knew I was doing this, and I saw some families and they cheered me on,” he said.
“(The donations) came from the LDHS community..... We were thinking that we may break $3,000; we never thought we would raise more than $6,000.” Fundraising events have been curtailed because of the pandemic, forcing the Mini-THON club to devise new events. “We do restaurant fundraisers. We did a Dafnos (Italian Grille) fundraiser two weeks prior to the event, and that gave us some
good funds,” Payonk noted. “We don’t want to ask for donations when businesses are already challenged. We are still brainstorming ideas.” Mini-THON at LDHS is modeled after the Penn State THON, and all money raised is donated to Four Diamonds, which covers 100% of all medical expenses related to cancer care not covered by insurance for eligible Four Diamonds children. “(The Mini-THON) is pretty much run by the students. My coadviser and I just answer any questions they may have and (the students) bounce ideas off us. In general, the students really run the show,” Payonk stated. Pet owners in need of food for their dogs and cats are invited to visit the pet food bank that is offered by the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA), 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg. The free pet food is available to those who are struggling to feed their pets because of financial hardships, with the goal of keeping more pets in their home and out of shelters. Because of the pandemic, the pet food bank has changed the way it operates. Last April, online sign-up became available, allowing people to register and choose a time to safely pick up the food in a drive-through format. “Before COVID-19, people would call in and say they need help and tell us how many pets they had and come in to get their food,” explained Amanda Brunish, HSHA director of marketing and outreach. “(People) See Food Bank pg 4

Theater Plans Virtual Event Thousands of audience members did not get the opportunity to visit Mount Gretna last summer to enjoy professional theater performances. Now, after a year of dark stages, Gretna Theatre will kick off its 2021 season with a free livestreamed performance for the community. On Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., Gretna Theatre will present a program titled “Still Here.” Performances will highlight some of the theater’s past productions and feature prior Gretna Theatre actors. The theme touches on the idea that even though audiences cannot meet in person, Gretna Theatre is still
present to entertain, engage, educate, and transform - just in new and different ways. This evening serves as a fundraiser replacement for the canceled October gala and summer season, where the organization could not obtain its traditional revenue. The performance will be accompanied by a virtual auction of unique experiences donated by local supporting businesses, and viewers can offer donations to help support Gretna Theatre begin its next season. The theater has had to furlough nearly all its employees and delay productions on a massive scale. It continues serving the community as a
nonprofit through adapted arts education programs offered virtually to schools and community centers. Readers may visit www.gretna.givesmart.com to register for the event, preview auction items, and see which local businesses are supporting the future of Gretna Theatre. The one-hour performance will also be broadcast on Gretna Theatre’s Facebook page. As a way to upgrade the experience while offering support to Gretna Theatre’s education programs, viewers can purchase a VIP guest pass, which comes with a hand-curated appetizer box from Graze Lancaster available for pickup.

New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. • Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? • Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? • Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? • Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? • Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? • Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton. If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “Had trouble walking through the woods while shooting archery. I am now able to walk without tripping on branches and up and down stairs. I had a problem lifting my right leg and getting up from the floor while sitting. Now I can get up with no problem!” - Rich A. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call our office to register at 717-210-9945. Ask for Itzel... To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 20 seats… and seats fill up FAST. The first 10 registrants will receive a FREE copy of the Top 3 Exercises for Knee Pain when they come to the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again. Chad Madden Physical Therapist R067918

Food Bank from pg 1 can now sign up for a time slot, say how many pets they have and the type of pets, and we will have the food ready for them in a pickup location outside the building. Our goal is to help as many people as possible as safely as possible.” To register for a time to come to the pantry, readers may visit www.humanesocietyhbg.org and choose Get Assistance and then HSHA Pet Food Bank Drive (Thru). Those who do not have access to a computer may call 717564-3320 and choose option 105 for the food bank coordinator to register. When people arrive, they will be given dry pet food for their cats or dogs. “If (the pets) have a grain issue, we can accommodate grain-free food if possible,” Brunish said. “We try to give treats as well if those are available. We want to set the pet owner up for success and make sure the
pet will have a full belly for a while.” Because of the pandemic and increasing demands, the pet food bank received funding from the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART). According to Kristi Kleinfelter, HSHA food bank coordinator, the food bank would typically get one or two pickups per day in 2019. Since COVID-19, it is normal for the food bank to have six to seven pickups a day. Brunish reported that from April to December 2020, HSHA donated more than 14,500 pounds of pet food to those in need in central Pennsylvania. This helped to feed more than 275 pets. She noted that pet adoptions went up significantly during the stay-at-home order last spring. Food bank donations are welcome. Individuals and families may donate, as well as church groups or clubs
such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. “We have a donation bin to the left of the adoption center, and donations can be dropped off anytime,” noted Brunish. “We suggest that people visit our website there is a section called Get Involved. Under that, we have a wish list, which is our most-needed items. For anyone interested in doing a food drive, this is a good place to start.”
At this time, only cat and dog food is available from the pantry. Those who have a different type of pet and are in need of assistance, as well as those who are unable to travel to HSHA, should email front desk@humanesocietyhbg.org. For more information about the HSHA and the food bank, readers may visit www.humanesocietyhbg.org or www.facebook.com/Humane HBG or call 717-564-3320.

Hershey Rotary Awards Funds In November 2020, Hershey Rotary Club awarded funds totaling more than $24,000 to 23 charitable organizations in Derry Township. In past years, the club’s source of funds has been the annual auction and fundraiser. Last year’s event, scheduled for April 18, 2020, had to be canceled due to COVID-19. However, with the support of sponsors that allowed the club to retain their sponsorship funds, including The Hershey Company, The Milton Hershey School, Country Meadows Associates, and Bryn Mawr Trust Company, these awards are possible. Organizations that were awarded funds are New Birth of Freedom Council - Boy Scouts of America, Cocoa Packs Inc., Derry Township Community Cats, Hershey Area Playhouse, Hershey Community Archives, Hershey Community Chorus Inc., Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach, Hershey Public Library, The Hershey Story - History Contest for Young Writers, Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Literacy

He recently published his first book, “140 Days to Hiroshima: The Story of Japan’s Last Chance to Avert Armageddon.” The title of Barrett presentation will be “Reign of Ruin,” a word play on the famous quote from President Harry S. Truman after the atomic attack on Hiroshima: “If they do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this Earth.” Barrett’s talk will
focus on Japanese and American leadership in the final months of World War II. Barrett has also published work in WWII Quarterly Magazine, U.S. Military History Review, and Global War Studies. He served as historical consultant and producer for the documentary “Heroes of the Sky: The Mighty Eighth Air Force,” which first aired on the National Geographic channel in 2020.
