Teens invited to library STEM program

Middleand high school students are invited to check out the new Teen STEM program currently being offered at the Middletown Public Library. During the program, which meets at the library on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., not only do youths enjoy learning about science, technology, engineering and math, but they also take part in hands-on activities. The program is free, and registration is not required.

The program is being taught by student volunteers from the Penn State Harrisburg chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). So far, they have talked about subjects such as robotics, computer coding using Scratch and “Logic Gates” and how they are used in electrical engineering.

“I think it’s great that the college students are doing this. It’s a different relationship. It’s not like professor/student; it’s more peer-to-peer,” said library director John Grayshaw. “The kids that come look up to (the older students).”

In a recent session, students learned how to create a circuit board that flashed a series of LED lights. “Basically, we showed them the basic components of the circuit board and how to solder and let them put together a kit,” explained Penn State student Michael Cieslak. “It’s not a fancy circuit; it flashes the LEDs one by one as you push the button. And when you let go, the lights go off.”

“They were very excited at being hands-on and connecting wires,” added Jeremiah Ddumba, Penn State Harrisburg IEEE president, who was also on hand during the session. “Students stay engaged as long as you talk about interesting things. When we were working with the circuit boards, we got a little off

topic. We talked about microwave ovens and how they work and how that relates to engineering.”

Future projects include learning about robotics and computer coding. “They will do some hands-on programming using the library’s public computers and use Scratch to make games,”

noted Grayshaw.

Ddumba said the goal of the program is to teach attendees about electrical, mechanical and civil engineering. “We are happy to help teach kids. When I was that age, there were not too many STEM programs until about 10th grade,” he said.

Grayshaw pointed out that the library also offers a STEM Club for elementary age students that meets on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“STEM Club is aimed at a slightly younger age. They have the different circuit boards where they can make different types of STEM ‘toys,’” he said. “It’s not as formal. There’s not a lesson that’s taught. Kids can play and explore.”

Grayshaw is hoping that the Teen STEM program will continue to grow and attract more teenagers. “We get three to five students, and we would ideally like to see at least a dozen,” he said. “(The class) takes place in the children’s section. If it gets bigger, it would move to the assembly room.”

Middletown Public Library is located at 20 N. Catherine St., Middletown. For more information about the STEM programs and other library activities, visit www.middle townpubliclib.org. Those with questions may contact Grayshaw at 717-944-6412 or John.Grayshaw@middletown publiclib.org.

The show features all the components of the classic tale that audiences are family with, including the night that Hansel and Gretel spend in the woods, where they encounter various characters -

an arrogant troll who fiercely guards his little wooden bridge, a talking owl, a forest sprite and two hobgoblins in the service of the witch - to the discovery of the candycoated little cottage.

The show will be staged at HCPAC, 1000 S. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.thehcpac.org/shows. Those who have questions about ticket purchases may email tickets@thehcpac.org.

Lions Club program provides benches

The Hershey Lions Club recently presented the Hershey Public Library with a bench as part of the club’s plastic film recycling program. The Lions have been partner-

ing with the library to collect plastics since January 2022.

In addition to the bench at the library, the Lions Club has provided two benches to Derry Township Parks &

Recreation as well as one bench each to Grace United Methodist Church and a local business, both of which have assisted in the collections.

In slightly over a year, the

CWS Harrisburg plans fundraiser

Church World Service (CWS) Harrisburg will hold a fundraiser at West Shore Theatre, 317 Bridge St., New Cumberland, on Saturday, March 18, at 7 p.m. to celebrate its first anniversary of welcoming new neighbors to the Harrisburg region. Attendees will learn about CWS Harrisburg’s impact and programs and enjoy a screening of the film “Olga.” Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

The event will include a film screening of the film “Olga,” which centers on a 15year-old Ukrainian gymnast exiled in Switzerland who is working to secure a place at the country’s National Sports

Center. When the Euromaiden revolt breaks out in the country, anxieties rise as her family gets involved. The film includes English subtitles.

CWS Harrisburg’s mission is to help refugees resettle, form long-lasting relationships in the community, and maintain their own basic needs in a sustainable lifestyle. CWS Harrisburg, through its support of Uniting for Ukraine, provides services to Ukrainian citizens or those who recently lived in Ukraine that arrived in the United States since Feb. 24, 2022.

General admission tickets may be purchased at www.cwsharrisburg.org/one.

well as selections from Synge’s poetry. The plays are directed by FL Henley Jr., artistic director of Narçisse Theatre Company.

“Riders to the Sea” takes place in The Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. It is a place of hard living.

Maurya, who has lost her husband and five sons to working the sea, is waiting for news about another son, Michael, who is now also missing. Meanwhile, Maurya’s youngest son, Bartley,

the last one left, prepares to take his place as the family breadwinner in the only way he knows how.

“In the Shadow of the Glen” is a tragic-comedy that takes place in the dark hollows of County Wicklow, Ireland. A storm rages late one evening and a rainsoaked stranger seeks shelter in a lonely farm cottage. He is welcomed by the beautiful woman of the house, only to find much more than he bargained for.

club has collected roughly 3,400 pounds of plastic bags and other plastic film, which was recycled into a composite material that is used for decking. A portion of the material was returned in the form of benches for use in the community. The project not only provides benches, but also results in less plastic destined for a landfill.

Receptacles where community members may drop off plastic bags and other plastic film are located in the lobby of the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, and at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 East Main St., Hummelstown.

For more information about the Hershey Lions Club, visit www.hersheylions.org.

Additional donations are welcome to help cover the cost of this event. Advance tickets are the best way to secure a seat, and ticket availability at the door cannot be guaranteed. Advance ticket sales will end at noon on Thursday, March 16.

Complimentary tickets are available to those with financial barriers who could not otherwise attend as well as new Ukrainian neighbors by contacting Erika Juran by March 16 at ejuran@cwsglobal.org. Event sponsorships are available. For more information about CWS and to volunteer, visit www.cwsharrisburg.org or call 717-358-9351.

At select performances, the festivities will begin with a pre-show dance presentation by members of the McGinley School of Irish Dance. Throughout the run of the show, specialty cocktails inspired by Ireland will be served at the bar.

Tickets are “pick your price,” with recommended prices. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.gamuttheatre.org or call the box office at 717238-4111.
