Medical Student Collects CDs, Records For Senior Resident BY FRANCINE FULTON
lthough he is partway on the long educational journey to becoming a doctor, medical student Garrett Thompson has already learned an important lesson about providing individualized care to patients. Thompson, who attends Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, recently collected donations of CDs and record albums from the 1980s to give to a patient in senior care, who is a former rock musician. After posting on social media about the need for donations, Thompson collected a variety of items, including an autographed album, “Metal Health,” by ‘80s band Quiet Riot, which was donated by Frank Lentz.
“This course provides students with more of these skills - how to understand a patient’s interaction with their disease and best tailor treatment to address all of their needs, not just medical needs, but also social and holistic needs.”
hard time with COVID because in the nursing homes there are all these restrictions in place. It is a challenging time for everyone, but especially people in long-term care because they have a lost a lot of contact with their family and their friends within the facility itself.” Working with patients in medical facilities is part of the curriculum in a required course titled Health Systems Science, which covers topics such as the foundations of health systems, health care delivery and insurance, as well as teamwork and leadership. “The art of medicine involves a lot more fine-tuning your approach to each patient’s individual needs,” said Thompson. “This course provides students with more of these skills - how to
Sarah LaVerdiere of Grantville is a member of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts, an honor typically earned only by Boy Scouts. In February 2019, Boy Scouts of America permitted girls to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. The Boy Scouting branch of the organization also adopted a new name at that time - Scouts BSA.

understand a patient’s interaction with their disease and best tailor treatment to address all of their needs, not just medical needs, but also social and holistic needs.” Other medical students are also taking part in projects at the facilities where they are assigned. One student, Thompson noted, is providing laptops to patients in a rehabilitation hospital so that they can connect with their families virtually because of visitation restrictions. “There has been a movement to integrate more clinical experience in the first years (of medical school) and get a broader sense of understanding how patients interface in the health care system and issues that come up with that,” Thompson stated. “Health care is much more than giving someone medication. It is helping them navigate socioeconomic factors such as transportation issues - getting to medical appointments - and access to healthy foods. In a nursing home population, I have an opportunity to socialize and get that interaction.” Thompson, who plans to go on to an emergency medicine specialty, said he is enjoying getting to the know the patients on a more personal level. “The health care system has evolved. We are really good at treating diseases these days, but (the goal is to) treat the patient as a patient and not as (his or her) disease,” he said.
Middletown is again selling chocolate eggs through Easter Sunday, April 4, or as long as supplies last. This year’s sale is limited to the varieties that the church normally sells the most of: peanut butter milk chocolate, peanut butter dark chocolate, coconut dark chocolate, and butter cream milk chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold for a fee per egg. The eggs have received regional
outlets. In 2019, nearly 81,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 6,000 pounds of peanut butter, 870 pounds of butter/margarine, and 4,320 pounds of chocolate were used by more than 80 volunteers working over four months. Orders may be placed by visiting www.ssbvm.org and clicking on

Ruth Slenczynska (left) and Shelly Moorman-Stahlman.
Arts on the Square, a cultural series featuring musical performances and art exhibitions, will present a concert by pianists Ruth Slenczynska and Shelly Moorman-Stahlman. It will be livestreamed on Facebook from the sanctuary of historic Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, on Sunday, March 28, at 4 p.m. The concert may be accessed for free. Slenczynska, 96, is the last living student of legendary Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff. Slenczynska was born in 1925 in Sacramento, Calif., and began to study piano at age 3. She moved to Europe at age 4 to study with several noted pianists, including Rachmaninoff. Slenczynska made her public debut in Berlin at age 6 and in Paris at 7, performing with a full orchestra. She has had an extensive career of live performances all over the world and has made many recordings. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, she was on her way to Japan to perform. After spending several months in California with friends, she arrived to Pennsylvania to visit with former student Moorman-Stahlman. MoormanStahlman, a professor of music at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, is a renowned piano and organ performer. The two pianists have spent time playing duets during quarantine, leading to this program of works by Beethoven, Fauré and Rachmaninoff. The performance, to be played on the church’s recently rebuilt Steinway D grand piano, will be livestreamed at www.facebook .com/marketsquarechurch. For more information, contact Tyler Canonico at 717-257-1270, ext. 18, or canonico@market squarechurch.org.

Sarah LaVerdiere is part of the inaugural group of girls to earn the Eagle Scout rank. She completed her service project by making improvements to the deck at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Grantville.
Sarah is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 262 in Grantville, Dauphin County, which is part of the New Birth of Freedom Council. She said she became interested in Boy Scouting after watching her brothers benefit from the program.
“I was a Girl Scout for eight years before I joined Scouts BSA. This is a Scouting family, and both of my brothers were in (Boy Scouting) for as long as I can remember,” Sarah said. “I knew it helped them a lot. I am in Girl Scouts and I thought, ‘Why not be in Scouts BSA, too?’” Sarah’s Scouts BSA troop is sponsored by St. John’s United Methodist Church in Grantville, which is where she completed her required Eagle Scout service project. “The church that sponsors my Scouts BSA troop also owns a house across the street - the annex house. People meet there, (as well as) groups like AA. They meet on the porch, but it was in bad condition,” Sarah explained. “I went to my pastor and told him I really wanted to do my Eagle Scout project there.” For her project, Sarah upgraded the deck by adding supporting joists underneath. She also created a flower bed and placed decorative lattice around the front of the deck. “We added some railing as well,” she said. “There was one section that did not even have railing and the railing that was (around the deck) was shaky.”

Safety Is Focus Of Free Webinar Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center will host NJM Insurance Group’s virtual Share the Keys safe driving orientation for students and parents at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23. The 45-minute, research-based, data-driven program is designed to reduce teen driver crash risks through increased parental involvement. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is why the hospital’s trauma services team is offering the educational session. She contacted local businesses, who donated materials and all the money needed to complete the project. “A lot of my troop members and my family members came out to help me. We got it done in four days,” Sarah said. She said the most challenging aspect of the project was following COVID-19 precautions. “The hardest part was making sure everyone was safe. We all had masks on and had to social distance,” Sarah said. “I supplied lunch, but we had to spread out (when eating).” Sarah hopes to have her Eagle Court of Honor as soon as it is safe to do so. “I got the Eagle Scout rank patch that goes on the left pocket of your uniform and the Eagle Scout neckerchief,” she said. Sarah credited her family members, including her parents, Trevor and Michele LaVerdiere, for their support through the Eagle Scout process. Sarah, who recently turned 15, completed her Eagle Scout service project a bit early - at the age of 14. “My mom has been amazing,” Sarah said. “She is the leader of both my troops. Her leadership is amazing. I would not be where I am today without her.” Sarah is currently working on her Gold Award, which is Girl Scouting’s equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award.

They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present a virtual program of music from Swedish group Väsen-Duo on Saturday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be followed by a conversation with the musicians during which they will discuss their music and the unusual instruments they play. Väsen-Duo consists of Olov Johansson and Mikael Marin. Their music is rooted in the folk traditions of Sweden, but also includes modern elements. The March 27 program will include music featuring the nyckelharpa, a keyed fiddle. Johansson and Marin will also perform on a variety of other stringed instruments, including a silverbasharpa, oktavharpa, threerowed nyckelharpa, violoncello da spalla, and blue electric viola. Johannson has received many awards for his achievements as a musician, including being chosen as World’s Master of both the modern and older type of nyckelharpa and receiving the Zorn Medal in gold, the highest honor a traditional musician can
receive in Sweden. Marin is a viola player. He became a national fiddler in 1983 and was chosen to play in a world orchestra under the direction of Leonard Bernstein in 1989. When not performing with Väsen-Duo, he composes, produces, and arranges music for artists such as Mikael Samuelsson, Nordman, and Kronos. Tickets are by donation. To register, visit www.sfmsfolk.org/ concerts/Vasen-Duo.html. The Susquehanna Folk Music Society is supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County. For 20 years, Dr. Dale Treese has organized a golf tournament that brings golfers from as far away as Texas and Florida to play for prizes and give back to the community. This year’s Pinnacle Cup tournament will be held on Monday, June 14. The early bird registration deadline, which includes a discount, is Friday, May 7. Regular registration is due by Friday, May 28. The tournament will be held at the Royal Manchester Golf Links, 5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf, and proceeds will benefit the GEARS Camp Ladybug summer program. “Most charity events have a fourperson scramble setup,” Treese said. “I wanted to come up with something unique. I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.” The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older. “In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and com-
pares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.” Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the overall tournament champions. Teams in the Senior Division will play two matches of nine holes each. Up to four teams in the division will be eligible for the division playoff championship, which will determine the teams to play in the championship match play rounds for overall tournament champion. Treese, who began playing golf in high school and has been playing for more than 50 years, said the tournament offers a fun day for golfers. “This is different from a standard charity golf event,” he stated. “If someone enjoys match play, which I consider to be the ultimate game of golf, this incorporates match play into a charity event. It’s entirely different than what people are used to, but they love it once they try it.” The tournament is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit that provides assistance and support to special-needs and critically ill people. The Pinnacle Cup benefits the Elizabethtown-based Camp Ladybug, a summer program for children and adults with mental or physical challenges. “I’m excited to mark our 20th year of this tournament,” Treese said. “We have had a number of sponsors and players stay with us throughout the years, and we’ve been able to contribute $89,000 to charity. I’m hoping this year we’ll get the participation to eclipse $100,000.” For more information on the Pinnacle Cup, readers may contact Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net.

KatieBelle Davis, an eighth-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School, was recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police Department for doing the right thing. When a new student arrived this school year, KatieBelle allowed her school counselor to share her phone number with the student so she could text with the student and answer their questions to help them prepare for the first day in a new school. KatieBelle was a new student last year, so she was familiar with this experience. She also offered to sit with a seventh-grader who was having a difficult time finding someone to sit with since only two students were permitted per table. Lori Schaefer, counselor, nominated KatieBelle for recognition. KatieBelle was honored by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care in the school cafeteria during lunch. She received a gift card, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt and certificate, and a restaurant coupon. This month’s program sponsor was Commonwealth Financial Associates. The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. Any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child. For more information, readers may contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org.
