Geyers UMC to present annual Easter egg hunt

United Methodist Church (UMC) will hold its annual community Easter egg hunt on Palm Sunday, April 2, at 1 p.m. The event, which will also include lunch and children’s activities, is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

Karen Wise, Geyers UMC Children’s Club coordinator, said that local children and their families look forward to the event each year. “We have been doing this for more 20 years,” she said. “They watch the (Greater Hershey Community) Courier for news of the egg hunt. Last year, we had around 300 (participants).”

In preparation for the event, between 4,000 and 4,500 eggs will be scattered across the church lawn. Children age 13 and under are invited to bring their baskets to collect them. “We want to make sure that kids get eight, 10 or a dozen eggs (each). We ask them to return the eggs after the hunt so we can use them for next year,” Wise explained. “The youth of our church and Boy Scouts from Troop 97 in Londonderry Township do most of the placing of the eggs on the morning of Palm Sunday.”

Each egg in the hunt will be filled with candy or a small toy. “A group of about 10 volunteers from the church who are older people enjoy filling the eggs,” said Wise.

In addition to the candy and toys found inside the eggs, all children in attendance will receive a prize bag of chocolate and toys.

The Easter Bunny will be outside to greet children, so parents are encouraged to bring their cameras for photographs. There will also be face painting and temporary tattoos.

Starting times for the hunts will be as follows: birth to age 2, 1 p.m.; ages 3 and 4, 1:10 p.m.; ages 5 and 6, 1:15 p.m.; and ages 7 to 9 and age 10 and up, 1:20 p.m.

“We are blessed to have a lot of land all around the church. So we have plenty of places to keep the kids sepa-

rated by age groups,” noted Wise.

After the eggs have been collected, the entire family may pick up a free to-go lunch. Meals will include a hot dog, chips, dessert and a drink. “We used to have the meal inside the church, but with COVID, we began giving them a to-go lunch,” Wise pointed out. “We thought that it worked better, so we continued with that.”

In the case of rain, the egg hunt will become a drivethrough event where families can pick up eggs, candy, prizes and lunch from their cars.

Spring book sale slated

“Shrek The Musical” celebrates our differences

“This show is about acceptance,” said Landon Hunsicker, describing “Shrek The Musical.” “Shrek is an ogre, and everyone assumes he’s mean, but the show gives him the opportunity to show what’s inside him and help him connect with the other characters.”

“Shrek The Musical” will be performed by Encore! Home School Productions at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

“The cast has worked really hard on this show,” noted Landon, who portrays Donkey. “We started rehearsing in November. It’s a really fun show, and it’s different than the movie version of ‘Shrek.’ It adds to that original story.”

“Shrek The Musical” tells the story of the title character, Shrek, portrayed by Seth Snyder, who becomes an unlikely hero as he takes a journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona, played by Emily Norcott as an adult, Grace Richey as a teen and Cambria Brinton as a young child. Full of fairytale characters, the show is a

family-friendly story of friendship, love, community and uniqueness. As Pinocchio, played by Giselle Bartlett, says in the show, “What makes us special makes us strong.”

The production will feature a cast of 40 students from across the central Pennsylvania region. Students live in the school districts of Hempfield, Elizabethtown Area, Penn Manor, Donegal, Lancaster, Susquenita, Bermudian Springs, Camp Hill, Annville-Cleona, Central Dauphin, Lower Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, West Shore, Derry Township, East Pennsboro, Susquehanna Township and Middletown Area.

The large cast of actors don elaborate costumes, including fur suits and prosthetics, and for some of the actors, it’s been a unique challenge. “I wear a fur suit and I have hooves on my hands, so I’ve been practicing with them,” Landon stated. For Callaghan, his character is extremely short, requiring him to act on his knees. “I wear a long cape and have knee pads, and then I have fake legs attached to the pads,” he said. Gingy, played by Ella McKell, works with a puppet throughout the show, and Dragon, portrayed by Lily Patota, wears a large headpiece and maneuvers the stage with a giant tail.

Wellness Call program launched

Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.

With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.

Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.

Vietnam Veterans Day event slated

The Michael J. Novosel, Medal of Honor, Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 542 (VVA 542), 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg, will hold an event to recognize 411 Vietnam veterans who died in service to their country. The event will take place on Vietnam Veterans Day, Wednesday, March 29, at 11 a.m.

The men to be memorialized were from the nine counties that surround the VA Medical Center in Lebanon; these counties are Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin,

Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill, and York. Photos of the men will be shown during the reading of the names.

Readers of the names will be both Vietnam veterans and non-veterans from some of the nine counties. The keynote speaker will be former Marine and Vietnam veteran Gary Crowell from Camp Hill.

The event will also include music, a field cross ceremony presented by American Legion Riders Post 751 of Enola, bugler Robert Goodman, pinning of Vietnam veterans by

members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and a flyover by a Huey helicopter supplied by the Liberty War Birds, weather permitting. Joel Buch’s extensive Vietnam era collection of memorabilia will be on display, and a silent auction will be held.

Student Advisory Council recognized by university

The Student Advisory Council program at Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS) was selected by the Shippensburg University Superintendent Study Council (SUSSC) as an Exemplary Program for 2022.

The program’s founder, MAMS science teacher Justin Smith, has been invited to present the program at a recognition luncheon at Shippensburg University.

The Student Advisory Council program began after Smith suggested that students should have a forum to offer their input since parents may express their opinions at Advisory Council meetings. Smith’s idea met with approval, and two groups were formed: a Sixth-Grade Council and a

Seventh/Eighth-Grade Council.

Using the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) rewards program as their springboard, the students share ideas for reward events and rewards for the PBIS store. They are also the voice of the student body by providing input on ways to make improvements around the school.

The Seventh/Eighth-Grade Council is led by eighth-grader Tommy Jones, who creates the agenda and leads the meetings with minimal assistance. Since the program began, MAMS has seen a significant decrease in office referrals for the students who are members of the council groups.

Vista Autism Services recently welcomed a new CEO, Nzenalu “Nze” Obinelo. Obinelo came to Vista from Gateways Community Services in Nashua, N.H., where she served as the organization’s executive vice president of programs for the past 23 years and reported to the Gateways CEO.

In her previous role, Obinelo was responsible for the supervision and strategic direction of Gateways’ Community and Employment Services, ABA Services, Early and Family Support Services, Elder Services and Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Services.
