Scouts Attend Klondike Derby Boy Scouts from Troop 97 recently attended the 2022 Klondike Derby at Seven Mountains Scout Reservation. Scout patrols were challenged to progress through a series of stations in the mock-Yukon Territory setting of 1898 Dawson City using only the equipment and supplies carried on their team’s sled. Each station presented a practical problem to overcome with teamwork and Scouting skills. At the first aid and transport station, the Scouts were confronted with a scenario involving an avalanche recovery with injuries to a team member. The Scouts were awarded points for their ability to treat the injuries in the correct order of importance and to transport the victim to the field hospital using any method. The knottying relay was a timed event that required Scouts to know the square knot, bowline, See Scouts pg 2

sheet bend, clove hitch, twohalf hitches, and taut-line. At a Mystery Campsite, the Scouts had to identify 10 mistakes that had been made in setting up the camp. For example, the bear bag was hanging too low, and a saw was open and placed outside the designated axe yard. “I liked the Tomahawk Throw station,” said Tenderfoot Scout Jace Kryscio. A traditional Klondike challenge is cooking on the trail, which requires that Scouts have a written menu that includes the cost of food per Scout. Participants had to prepare the food with the equipment carried on their sled. The Troop 97 boys made a hot meal of chicken and stuffing, which warmed them in the cold temperature of -3 degrees. The Troop 97 participants unanimously agreed that their favorite station was the sled portage, where the objective was to carry their sled through a course without touching any obstacles. “We took the poles

from the sled and put them through the runners on the bottom of the sled, which made it easier to carry and maneuver around the trees,” explained Star Scout Jesse Reigle. Life Scout Leo Nissley stated, “The taller guys carried the sled and the smaller Scouts kept watch on the trees so we wouldn’t hit anything.
At one point, we were crawling under things on our knees.” According to Nissley, “We had the best teamwork and communication we ever had. It was awesome!” Troop 97 is sponsored by the Londonderry Fire Company. For more information about the troop, contact Ted Pauley at tszm@hotmail.com.

Lebanon VAMC Physician Honored Dr. Adam J. Albert, a physician at the Lebanon VA Medical Center (VAMC), part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, was awarded the 2021 Medicine Clerkship Teacher of the Year Award for Affiliate Faculty in the Medicine Category from the Penn State College of Medicine. It was the second time Albert has received this award, the first being in 2016. Dr. Nicholas Duca, director of the Medicine Clerkship and Acting Internship Program for Medical Students at Penn State College of Medicine, recognized Albert, along with other affiliate faculty receiving the Teacher of the Year Award,
on Jan. 25. The award is given based on student evaluations, which cited Albert’s genuine concern for and dedication to individual learners, his commitment to teaching exemplified by time spent both during and outside of rounds, and the skilled way in which he models competent and compassionate patient care at the bedside. Lebanon VAMC partners with the Penn State College of Medicine and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to provide inter-professional education and training for medical students, physician assistant students, and residents. Since 2016, Lebanon VAMC has
trained approximately 698 doctors, 231 medical students, and 84 physician assistants from the Penn State College of Medicine. Lebanon VAMC is one of 170 medical centers in the nation with the sole purpose of providing medical care to America’s veterans. Lebanon VAMC serves a nine-county area in southcentral Pennsylvania, including Berks, Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Veterans may be eligible to receive care and benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; to learn more, call 717-228-6000. For more information about
the Lebanon VAMC, visit www.lebanon.va.gov, www.face book.com/VALebanon, or www.twitter.com/VALebanon.

Festival To Support Kindergarten Student Family and friends of Ariella Lynn Coyne, a kindergartner at Lingle Elementary School in Palmyra, will host a community event on Saturday, May 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at Campbelltown Volunteer Fire Company, 2818 Horseshoe Pike, Campbelltown. Titled “Ariella’s Charity Band Festival,” the event will feature several bands throughout the afternoon, along with food trucks, bounce houses, a silent auction, and more. Ariella is currently undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for retinoblastoma
that has spread to her marrow. Monies raised from the event will go to Ariella’s family to offset the expenses that come with having a child with cancer. While there is no cover charge to get into the event, there will be donation opportunities throughout the afternoon. A portion of the proceeds from the food trucks will also go to the cause. Organizers are looking for volunteers to make the event a success, as well as silent auction items. If interested in donating time or goods to the event, contact Jared Russell at 717-903-7688 or soccer20star@gmail.com.

The Hershey Rotary Club has announced the winners of its 2021-22 Four-Way Speech Contest, which was open to students at Middletown Area High School, Hershey High School and the Milton Hershey School. Students were asked to prepare a 5-minute speech based on Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which requires people to ask four questions: “What is truth?” and “Is it fair to all concerned?” as well as “Will the truth build goodwill and friendships?” and “Will the truth be beneficial to all concerned?” Entries were submitted electronically, and teachers, parents or guardians were required to validate that the
students’ work was original. The speeches were then evaluated by a panel of judges. Taylor Kauffman won first place, and Allyson Salisbury placed second; both students are juniors at the Milton Hershey School. Taylor plans to attend college to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Allyson plans to attend Thaddeus Stevens College with the goal of becoming a plumber or welder. Taylor will advance to the local Rotary District 7390 contest and will compete against students from across the district for additional recognition and monetary awards. The final winner is to be announced by the district in April.
