On Saturday, April 23, the streets of Marietta will be full of artists in action. They’ll be taking part in a quick draw competition as part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, an art event that focuses on pieces created outdoors, or “en plein air.” “The quick draw is something we added this year,” said Marietta Art Alive! member Marita Hines. Marietta Art Alive! is the organizer of the plein air event that debuted last year. “(The quick draw is) open to anyone who is participating in the plein air competition as well as to anyone age 18 or older.” Participants may sign up for the quick draw online at www.mariettaart alive.com/qd, or they can register in person from 8 to 10 a.m. on April 23. “The streets will be closed, and they’ll set up their easels in the street,” Hines noted. “Beginning at 10 a.m., they’ll have two hours to finish their painting.” The quick draw is just one part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, which will feature 60 artists painting in outdoor areas throughout the river towns from April 18 through Wednesday, April 27. “Last year, we had specific sites for the artists to set up and the public to come out and watch them work, but we found that the artists prefer to find their own spots or paint something that caught their eye,” Hines stated. “The quick draw will give the public a chance to see the artists at work.” On Sunday, April 24, the event will feature a family

activity spotlighting the Japanese art of gyotaku, or fish painting. “We’re partnering with the Susquehanna Waldorf School,” Hines said. “Traditionally, this art form is done with live fish, but we’ll be using rubber fish. Kids will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, and they’ll print their fish right on the shirt.” The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the school’s gym, located at Apple and Waterford avenues. The plein air event will wrap up with a three-day exhibit of the completed work, held in the rear building of Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 29; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.
Members of the public are invited to view the art and vote for their favorite for the People’s Choice award. This year’s exhibit will feature both juried and non-juried artists, and the competition’s juror, Lou Schellenberg, will have an exhibit of his own work at MH Gallery, 42 W. Market St., Marietta, from April 30 through May 1. The plein air artwork will be for sale, and proceeds will benefit both the Marietta Community House and Rivertownes PA USA. “Come out and watch the quick draw, and come see the show,” Hines said. “This event was very well-received last year, and we’re really excited to do it again.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air 2022, visit www.mariettaartalive .com/pleinairevent.

RETAIL HOURS: APRIL, MAY, JUNE Chuck Jackson (front, third from right) and John Grosh Jr. (front, second from right) with members of the Donegal Area Softball League
the fields is named for Chuck Jackson, a former Elizabethtown Area High School teacher and active member of the softball league who served as league president for many years and pitched on the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren team. “I think of him as ‘Mr. Donegal Softball,’” Grosh stated. Grosh, who has been president of the league since 2004, began playing church softball in the 1970s with the Mount Calvary Church team in Elizabethtown. He moved away from the area for several years, but upon his return, he became a member of another church and today plays on the Hershey Free Church team. Although this season’s teams are already set, Grosh noted that the league is always looking for new players for upcoming seasons. “I would love to have more teams,” he said. “Church softball leagues everywhere have
gotten smaller over the past 20 years, but I’d love to see this one grow.” He encourages people to come out to see a game and noted that spectators will be treated to a game played by people who truly love the sport. “Because these are church teams, you get players with no foul language, and players are careful about displays of emotion and anger,” Grosh said. “We’re interested in fellowship as much as we are in softball. A lot of the players know players on the other teams, and they feel friendly with these guys. These games are a chance to come out to have a good time with people you’ve known for a long time.” A schedule of games can be found at www.dacsl.net. More information about the league can be found at the site or by contacting Grosh at jgrosh@juno.com or 717-898-0799.

Penn State Extension will offer a pollinator and water conservation planting volunteer opportunity on Saturday, April 30, to help support the Derry Environmental Action Committee and its partners in expanding and improving their pollinator and water conservation area in Hershey. The event will
take place at the Derry Conservation Area, Cocoa Avenue, Hershey, from 9 a.m. to noon. This former agricultural land has been in transition to native meadow and riparian buffer for over five years. The committee needs more help to continue this project in the Spring Creek Watershed. Vol-
unteers will focus more on rehabilitating the previous years’ plantings and help to remove invasive weeds. There is no charge to participate, but registration is required by Thursday, April 28. To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu and search for “Pollinator and Water Conservation Planting.”
Riparian Buffer Event Planned The public is invited to join Penn State Extension and the Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center’s Greening the Lower Susquehanna Program for Riparian Buffer Maintenance, an opportunity to help maintain a previously planted riparian buffer, on Saturday, April 23, from 9 to
11:30 a.m. The event will take place at the Swatara Creek on Fulling Mill Road, Middletown. Riparian buffers are considered a cost-effective way to protect waterways and keep the water clean. Riparian buffers require some assistance in the first few years to help them succeed. Attendees will learn the
basics of buffer maintenance and gain hands-on experience while helping maintain a buffer. The event is free and open to the public, but preregistration is required. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Riparian Buffer Maintenance.”

It’s been said that there’s no crying in baseball, but you know what there is in church softball? Camaraderie, kinship and a little bit of competition. For decades, the Donegal Area Church Softball League (DACSL) has been offering players a chance to get out on the field and indulge in a game they love. At its peak, the league featured 28 teams from towns in the region, including Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Hershey, Middletown and Mountville. Today, the league is composed of nine teams, which play a 13-week regular season followed by two weeks of playoffs. The season runs from mid-April through July. “Church softball is a little more relaxed in terms of competitiveness compared to a rec league,” said John Grosh Jr., president of DACSL. “The players just want to enjoy a fun game of softball. Sometimes, they aren’t the very best softball players, but it doesn’t matter.” While the league is not technically considered coed, since there are separate regulations for coed teams, it does welcome and encourage female players. “We also allow players as young as 12 years old,” Grosh noted. “It’s a good mix of players, and I like that part of it.” Games are played on two fields at the Armstrong World Industries campus, 1507 River Road, Marietta. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) seeks adults volunteers to mentor youths. As of April 8, more than 80 youths were on BBBSCR’s wait list across its service area, comprising Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and Perry counties. The kids, ages 7 to 17, are enrolled in BBBSCR’s one-toone community-based mentoring program. Adult mentors, known as Bigs, spend a few hours each month with their mentees, called Littles, for
low-cost or no-cost activities. BBBSCR supports 500 to 700 youths and their families annually. Volunteers are asked to commit to mentor their Little for a minimum of a year, but many decide to continue meeting with their Little over the course of several years. Throughout the lifetime of the match relationship, BBBSCR staff members communicate with parents, volunteers and youths, providing guidance, resources, trainings, activities and general support.
Hope’s Haven Plans Open House
Additionally, the agency is raising funds to support its current matches and the increased demand for volunteer mentors. Community members and companies are invited to join BBBSCR for its Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser, sponsored by Hershey’s Chocolate World. So far, the organization has raised over $80,000 of its $100,000 goal. As of April 8, BBBSCR needed 40 additional bowling teams via individuals or company sponsorships for its upcoming
events. Bowl for Kids’ Sake events will take place on Saturday, April 23, at 2:30 p.m. at ABC East Lanes, 1001 Eisenhower Blvd., Harrisburg; Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m. at Midway Bowl, 1561 Holly Pike, Carlisle; and Friday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Palmyra Bowling, 1218 E. Main St., Palmyra. To register for an event, visit www.capbigs.org. To sign up to volunteer with BBBSCR, visit https:// capbigs.org/be-a-mentor/.
