Clubs Partner To Raise Awareness, Collect Eyeglasses he Federated Women’s Club of Hershey recently partnered with the Hershey Lions Club to heighten awareness about vision impairment and to collect used eyeglasses. The joint effort began with a recent $250 contribution by the Federated Women’s Club of Hershey to the Hershey Lions Club to help people who are visually impaired. Carol Foley, local and state vision impairment awareness project chair and member of the Federated Women’s Club of Hershey, explained that vision impairment awareness is the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Pennsylvania’s (GFWC Pennsylvania) current two-year President’s Project. The initiative began due to a projected significant increase in the four most common eye problems over the next three decades, she noted. This projection came from the National Eye Institute. The monetary donation from the Federated Women’s Club of Hershey was used by the Hershey Lions to help an uninsured resident to obtain an eye exam and eyeglasses. The Hershey Lions have been helping the visually impaired since the club’s founding in 1944 with eye exams and glasses and through used eyeglass collections. Other GFWC Pennsylvania member clubs are also partnering with Lions clubs and other organizations in similar ways. Collectively, the Federated Women’s Clubs set a goal of gathering over 2,020 pairs of used eyeglasses for donation by May 2022. The clubs swiftly exceeded their goal with a recent

total of 2,045 used eyeglasses collected. In addition to assisting the visually impaired through her President’s Project, 2020-22 GFWC Pennsylvania president Sandy Hauenstein volunteers at Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania and hosts a two-hour weekly live radio broadcast, including current weather, news, opinion pieces, and articles, that is broadcast online and is available to the vision-impaired. General information about the state project is available at www.gfwcpennsylvania.org. Residents can learn more about the Federated Women’s Club of Hershey by searching for @FedWomens ClubHershey on Facebook. Mandia from pg 1 For nearly eight years, Mandia has also led the planning of the new Hershey Community Center, which will open in the summer of 2022. “My hope is that this facility will be a beacon of goodness in our community for generations to come,” he said. Mandia commended everyone on his team for working hard to have a positive impact on the quality of life for Derry Township residents. He acknowledged the contributions of all current and past team members, such as former township manager Jim Negley, department heads, and all staff. “Many don’t understand the commitment that it takes to provide meaningful recreational services to a community,” said Mandia. He noted that his colleagues’ jobs usually revolve around times when most people are off school or work and are looking for leisure activities. Mandia said that the parks and

recreation department works during normal business hours, preparing to work on non-business hours to provide those experiences and programs. As for what’s next for Mandia, he said that he and his wife plan to hike, bike, travel, and volunteer. “We have both given to our professions for more than 30 years and decided that this was the time for the transition to our next phase in life,” he added. Mandia said he hopes that future Derry Township Parks and Recreation teams and township leaders continue to make the outdoor park and trail spaces a priority, as they have been for many years. He added, “These places provide a silent but very powerful and positive impact to residents. A walk on one of our trails, a bike ride, watching a youth sports game, or merely sitting quietly in one of our amazing parks, all brings an unmeasured value to our lives.”

When it came to raising funds this year for Brittany’s Hope, executive director Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd and her team got creative. “We usually do a big 5K fundraiser in the fall, but we had to scale that down this year,” Sahd said. “So, we came up with this idea of the 5K Mother’s Day Challenge.” The “race your way” event will run from Saturday, May 8, through Saturday, May 15. “It’s a way for people to participate in an easy, safe manner,” Sahd noted. “You just go to our website and choose how you want to participate.” There are multiple options for the fundraiser, which raises money for orphaned and at-risk children through adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. Participants may pick the distance of their choice and complete the miles anywhere and any way they choose, from walking to running, biking, inline skating and more. Participants may also choose to celebrate Mother’s Day through the event, Sahd said. “The beautiful piece of this is you have the option to honor or dedicate your race to a mother figure - any woman you respect - and we will write a Mother’s Day card and send it out on your behalf,” she explained. “It’s a nice Mother’s Day gift to your mom or any influential woman in your life.” Sahd said although this is the first time Brittany’s Hope is doing a 5K this way, she has set lofty goals. “We would be absolutely thrilled to get over 400 participants to accept the challenge, establish 40 teams and together raise $30,000 for Brittany’s Hope,” she stated. “In challenging times like these, the work of high-impact charities like ours is critically needed. We are their only lifeline.” She added that 100% of the

Brittany’s Hope will hold a 5K Mother’s Day Challenge to raise funds for children like Samuel, who was adopted from Vietnam through a grant from the nonprofit organization.

funds raised go directly to caring for vulnerable and orphaned children. This year’s race has a special significance for Sahd. Her 5-year-old son, Peter, will be participating. “He told me, ‘I want to race to help boys and girls who need mommies, daddies and toys,’” Sahd said, adding that Peter even picked out a unique team name - Team Dino-mite - to reflect his love of dinosaurs. While Peter will be racing in honor of his grandmother, Sahd encourages anyone with a desire to give back and also honor women to participate in the event. “We can’t all get together as a community like we have in the past, but we can still bring people together in a different way, united for one cause,” she stated. All children ages 7 to 11 and their parents or guardians are invited to participate in the HighHOPES Miniature Horse Challenge at Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA), Station Road, Grantville, on Saturday, May 1, from 9 to 11 a.m. The course is designed to promote healthy choices, effective communication skills, problem-solving and volunteerism using equine-assisted (horse-assisted) learning. Horse experience is not required. Children will experience hands-on, fun activities, while learning proper horse grooming and handling. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. The program is offered free of charge, although donations to CATRA will be accepted. A limited number of slots are available. To register, email robin@catra.net and include the parent or caregiver’s name, address, phone number, and email address and the child’s name and age.

The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) is preparing for the upcoming kitten season by holding a kitten shower donation drive and hosting a virtual Kitten Shower Foster Parent Event. Spring and early summer is the busiest time at HSHA due to the number of kittens being born, and more kitten items and foster parents are needed. The most needed items during kitten season are canned kitten food, dry kitten food, KMR Formula, cat toys, Miracle Nipples, and pet heating pads. Throughout April, donations may be dropped off at Pet Authority, 3997 Sunnycrest Drive, Harrisburg; Zoomania, 4600 Jonestown Road 195, Harrisburg; McCracken’s Pet & Food, 700 N. Market
