Hershey Artfest was canceled in 2020. “We revived it last year,” said history center executive director Nikki Soliday, noting that it was held with social distancing restrictions. “It was pretty fantastic. I was surprised by the number of vendors and the crowds that showed up. We were one of the first major events coming out of winter and the spring lockdown. This year, we will return to our regular format of how we set up the vendors and artists.” Those who visit the event will be able to browse the arts and crafts at vendor booths, where they will also be able to chat with the artisans and learn about their work. “It’s a premier show,” said Soliday. “(We feature) fine art - oils, pastels, watercolors - (along with) photography, jewelry and ceramics. We are very particular about the jewelry we take and the ceramics. We want things that are not fabricated from kits. (We feature) anything that is handcrafted.” “We also want to have various price points so that anyone who comes to the show can walk away with something,” she added. The art show has expanded though the years. It was first held at the History Center
museum. “This show was 16 years in the making. It began at the museum in Hershey and at one point we had 20 vendors, (including) some photographers and maybe some pastel and watercolor artists,” Soliday noted. “When we outgrew the museum, we expanded into the parking lot. Then, we went to the Beanery. We started using it regularly in 2019.” She said the site is an ideal location for the event. “It is a wonderful outdoor venue. It is a great setup, a great location, there are a lot of grassy areas, and it is right across from a prominent location at Routes 322 and 422. It has access points that are so easy for others coming from the central Pennsylvania region.” “It’s a nice, casual day,” she continued. “Bring the kids, bring the neighbors and bring your friends. It is a nice social outing.” The Cocoa Beanery and the Englewood Barn complex are located next to the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center grounds off Route 322. Admission and parking will be free. For more information about the show and to view information about the participating artisans, visit Visitors to Hershey Artfest will be able to browse displays www.hersheyartfest.org. of jewelry and fine arts and crafts.

The dumpster company Bin There Dump That has developed a four-week, day-by-day spring cleaning schedule that offers tips and tricks to help property owners welcome the new season by cleaning up and clearing out every room in their home or business. According to Mike Kernaghan, CEO of Bin There Dump That, the spring cleaning schedule walks property owners step-by-step through a onemonth program of clearing out and cleaning up that will leave their properties fresh and free of clutter, inside and out. The spring cleaning calendar breaks tasks down into four weeks, with daily tasks in each week. Week One - “The Purge: Big Picture Organization” is focused on eliminating clutter because it
does not make sense to spend time deep-cleaning items that are no longer needed. Week Two - “The Cozy Places: Living Areas, Bedrooms and Closets” focuses on creating spaces that help people improve the way they sleep, work and relax. Week Three - “The Gritty Places: Kitchen, Bath, Garage, Basement and Attic” covers spaces that have the potential for harboring health-threatening mold and mildew. Week Four - “The Finish Line: Wrapping Everything Up” features special maintenance of carpets, countertops and hardwood floors; important safety reminders; and an outdoor equipment review. To access the schedule, visit www.bintheredumpthatusa.co m/spring-cleaning-schedule.
Kernaghan noted that for those who have completed their spring cleaning and are ready to get rid of the clutter they purged in Week One and yard debris from Week Four, residential-friendly dumpsters are available from Bin There Dump That. To learn more about renting a dumpster or to discuss a project with a Bin There Dump That Dumpster consultant, contact Dolly Armstrong at Bin There Dump That of Harrisburg at 717-766-7857 or dolly@bintheredumpthat.com or Justin Sierer of Bin There Dump That of York at 717900-5101 or york@binthere dumpthat.com. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Greater Hershey Area -
Exhibit To Highlight Historic Site The Hummelstown Area Historical Society will celebrate the 1815 Parish House by presenting a new exhibit about the structure in the society’s History House, 32 W. Main St. The grand opening will take place on Sunday, May 1, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the exhibit may be viewed through October during normal business hours on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted. Titled “Preserving the Parish House in Words, Photographs, and Deeds,” the display will include more than 100 vintage and contemporary photographs, as well as
renderings by local artists. A written history of the building by Linda Fenical, past president of the society and historian for the Parish House, will be available at no charge. A “Then and Now” display will feature vintage and current views of the interior of the Parish House. Viewers may notice that little has changed in the building’s appearance since renovations in 1855. The historical society has renovated the building with a bathroom, a kitchen, meeting rooms, and heating and air-conditioning, carrying out these modifications in ways that are sensitive to the building’s historical integrity.
A meet-and-greet with artist Daniel Petruzzi will take place at the History House from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15. Petruzzi will be available to discuss his recent works of the Parish House. The Parish House property is among the lots reserved by Frederick Hummel for religious affairs in 1762 in his newly surveyed town. The lots, which also include the Hummel Cemetery, occupy the highest point in Hummelstown Borough. The Society is only the second owner of these lots, the first being Zion Lutheran Church. The society has maintained the Parish House for 50 years. Visitors to the Parish House in future months may
notice an external change to the building, as the mortar on the limestone exterior walls will be replaced. Portions of the mortar are missing or disintegrating, leaving the building at risk of physical damage. Water and moisture can seep into the interior during rain storms. In past efforts to address these issues, four different types of mortar were used for patching. The project is funded using money received from the society’s recent fundraising effort for the Preservation Fund along with grants awarded by Dauphin County. Haldeman restoration specialists have been entrusted with the project, which is scheduled to begin this summer.

Students at Lower Dauphin High School were recently recognized for achievements related to computing. Teams from Lower Dauphin High School won first and third places at the annual Shippensburg University Computer Programming Contest. The first-place team was made up of Toby Waters, Carter Lammando, and Raphael Bastos. Adrian Olweiler and Jake McIntire were on the thirdplace team. Both teams were advised by high school teacher Nancy Kiscadden. The team programming competition consists of five to seven challenging problems. Each team, consisting of one to three students, develops programs to correctly solve as many of the problems as it can. An additional challenge of this competition is that each team only has one computer to work with. The winners are decided based on which team solved the most problems in the least amount of time. The problems are developed each year by members of the Shippensburg University Programming Team. Additionally, Lower Dauphin senior Katelyn Hanft was named an award winner by the National

Red Cross Seeks Blood Donations The American Red Cross encourages community members to make blood or platelet donation a part of their spring plans. Donated blood has a limited shelf life, so supplies must be constantly replenished. Donors can make an appointment by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting www.redcrossblood.org or calling 800-733-2767. To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification. Individuals who are age 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good
health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors age 18 and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass. With RapidPass, donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of donation from a mobile device or computer. To complete a RapidPass, follow the instructions at www.redcross blood.org/rapidpass or use the American Red Cross Blood Donor app.
