The sixth annual Hummelstown Hunger Run/Walk to be held on May 8 at Schaffner Park will benefit the Hummelstown Food Pantry.

Hunger Run/Walk To Benefit Hummelstown Food Pantry BY FRANCINE FULTON

he sixth annual Hummelstown Hunger Run/Walk, featuring a 5K run and walk, as well as a newly added 5-mile run, is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, at Schaffner Park, located at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Water Street in Hummelstown. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Hummelstown Food Pantry. Race-day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 5K and 5-mile runs will begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the start of the 5K walk. The first- through thirdplace male and female runners will receive cash prizes and medals; medals will also be provided for the first- and second-place male and female runners in each age group. Registrants and volunteers will receive a gift bag. Because of the pandemic, there will be some changes to this year’s

know before the race that the course is not closed and to be aware of traffic.” Those who take part in the 5K and 5-mile runs will follow the same course, but the 5-mile runners will divert off the main course for the additional distance. Runners and walkers with dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome to participate. “We actually have a prize for the first person who crosses the finish line with a stroller and (one) with a leashed dog,” said Osevala. Spectators are also welcome, but they must practice social distancing. The event has generated more than $93,000 for the Hummelstown Food Pantry since its inception in 2015. “My husband and I created this to raise money for the pantry,” Osevala noted. “It has grown in numbers each year. The first year we had less than 150 people. In 2019, we had about 270 participants and 150 volunteers.”

Cheer Teams Advance In Competitions Hershey Elite All Stars has announced that several of its teams recently advanced in competitions. The organization opened in 2019 and is in its second season. Senior team Vortex will travel to ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney for the Division 2 Summit Nationals on May 13 to 15. The team won its bid to this event last season when it triumphed at the Maryland Cup National Championship, but the bid had to be deferred when the championships were canceled due to COVID.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in support of the CRC, the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation deployed hundreds of blue pinwheels to five hospital locations through central Pennsylvania. The blue pinwheels represent the carefree and bright childhood that children should have, but which some do not have. The project’s goals are to acknowledge abuse and create conversations around prevention. Community members may learn more and donate to the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation in support of Pinwheels for Prevention at www.UPMC PinnacleFoundation.org. All funds raised will go directly toward the needs of the UPMC Pinnacle CRC.

At past events, registrants and volunteers who brought a nonperishable food item for the pantry were entered into a random drawing for one of many gift certificates provided by local sponsors. “Due to COVID protocols this year, we will draw (winners of) the gift certificates from participants and volunteers that preregister and include their prize in their race bag,” explained Jill Osevala, who runs the event along with her husband, BJ. However, attendees are still asked to bring nonperishable food items on race day for donation to the pantry. Since the course is located on neighborhood streets, volunteer fire police from Hummelstown Fire Company will be on hand to guide participants at the major intersections. “We have volunteers all over the course that help with traffic control as well,” noted Osevala. “We let everyone

Annville resident Rene Ryan recently completed an individual fundraiser run, during which she ran 60 kilometers, or 37.28 miles, in honor of a child in her town who had died from severe abuse and neglect in early February. She heard about the case on the local news and decided to do something to honor the young boy. Her run gained support and turned into a fundraiser. She raised over $6,600 and collected more than 500 stuffed animals for the UPMC Pinnacle Children’s Resource Center of Lebanon County, an organization that works to prevent and reduce the trauma of child abuse and neglect. The Children’s Resource Center (CRC) is one of the oldest child advocacy centers in Pennsylvania and was one of only four in the commonwealth when it opened its doors in 1994. The CRC aims to reduce the trauma and aftermath of child abuse by providing a safe environment, forensic interviews, specialized medical care, and mental health services. The center relies on grants, community donations, and contracts with county children and youth agencies. Families are never billed for services they receive at the CRC, including ongoing trauma-focused therapy.

Mandia Announces Retirement

The

After more than 27 years in his position, Derry Township director of parks and recreation Matt Mandia has announced his retirement, effective Friday, April 30. Mandia came to Derry Township in 1994 as assistant director of parks and recreation and soon transitioned into the role of director. As director, he oversaw a variety of services, including the former recreation center on Cocoa Avenue, nine public parks that span a total of 194 acres, more than 13 miles of walking and biking trails, and numerous events and recreational programs. He shared that the department’s projects had made a difference in the lives of residents. “From my life-changing experience working with the Jonathan Eshenour Foundation to expand the bicycle and pedestrian trail to 13.5 miles to the development of Gelder Park and Founders Park to watching kids participate in programming at the recreation center only to eventually see them as parents walking through those same doors with their children, (it) is so impactful and gratifying knowing we made a difference,” he said. Mandia also reminisced about memories of the Memo-

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will host the Watkins Family Hour in a livestreamed concert on Sunday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. The event will include a questionand-answer session with the band at the end of the concert. Watkins Family Hour is a collaborative performance and recording project led by Los Angeles-based siblings Sean and Sara Watkins, both of whom came to prominence in the 1990s as part of the Grammy-winning progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek. Aside from a solo career, Sara also performs with Sarah

Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan as the group I’m With Her, which won a Grammy in 2019. Sean’s projects have included the duo Fiction Family and the supergroup Works Progress Administration. Funding for Susquehanna Folk Music Society concerts is provided by the Cultural Enrichment Fund and by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County. rial Day ceremony and parade, the Halloween parades, and the Kids Club and Summer Day Camp programs. For nearly eight years, Mandia has also led the planning of the new Hershey Community Center, which will open in the summer of 2022. “My hope is that this facility will be a beacon of goodness in our community for generations to come,” he said. Mandia commended everyone on his team for working hard to have a positive impact on the quality of life for Derry Township residents. He acknowledged the contributions of all current and past team members, such as former township manager Jim Negley, department heads, and all staff. “Many don’t understand the commitment that it takes to provide meaningful recreational services to a community,” said Mandia. He noted that his colleagues’ jobs usually revolve around times when most people are off school or work and are looking for leisure activities. Mandia said that the parks and recreation department works during normal business hours, preparing to work on non-business hours to provide those experiences and programs.

Central Penn College is one of only 43 state universities and colleges to be designated by the Pennsylvania National Guard Associations (PNGAS) as a PNGAS Guard Friendly School. This is the second year for the award and the second year Central Penn College earned this distinction. To support National Guard

members pursuing their education, Central Penn College offers the $1,000 Pennsylvania National Guard Appreciation Scholarship, which is awarded to any student using his or her Pennsylvania National Guard EAP benefit for general education use. To learn more, visit www.centralpenn.edu.

As for what’s next for Mandia, he said that he and his wife plan to hike, bike, travel, and volunteer. “We have both given to our professions for more than 30 years and decided that this was the time for the transition to our next phase in life,” he added. Mandia said he hopes that future Derry Township Parks and Recreation teams and township leaders continue to make the outdoor park and trail spaces a priority, as they have been for many years. He added, “These places provide a silent but very powerful and positive impact to residents. A walk on one of our trails, a bike ride, watching a youth sports game, or merely sitting quietly in one of our amazing parks, all brings an unmeasured value to our lives.”

In seventh and eighth grades, the honorees are Willow Kristich, violin, silver; Lila Markowitz, violin, silver; Ananya Patil, violin, silver; Lauren Gula, violin, silver; Sasha Jones, violin, bronze; Herth Patel, violin, bronze; Elias Miller, viola, silver; Virginia
