LDHS Team Wins State STEM Competition Lower Dauphin High School’s (LDHS) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) team of Kelly Barr, Morgan Cummings, Annie Dickinson, Hailey Foreman, and Abbie Natkin recently won first place in the state and also won first place in the people’s choice category at the annual Pennsylvania Invention Convention in State College. The team’s winning project created a tapiocabased plastic to substitute for traditional polymer-based plastics. The product can be used to make beverage can six-pack holders that will be biodegradable and not contribute to plastic pollution in oceans. Plastioca is a biodegradable, renewable, and green alternative to traditional polymer-based plastics. In addition to trial-and-error experimentation

to come up with the right tapioca-based formula for their plastic alternative, the team members used 3-D printers to create the molds in which to make the final product. The team is coached by Lower Dauphin science teacher Elizabeth Kirman. By virtue of their state win, the team is eligible to compete at nationals, which will be held Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Dearborn, Mich., in late May. To reach nationals, the team is seeking donations to offset the per-student cost of $1,200 for plane tickets, hotels and conference registrations. Those interested in making a donation may call superintendent Robert Schultz at 717-566-5334.

Bach’s motet “Lobet den Herrn” expresses praise to God, contrasting with the peaceful reflections of evening in “Abendlied” by Josef Rheinberger. Quiet moments are captured in Ola Gjeilo’s “Evening Prayer” and Howard Helvey’s arrangement of “Steal Away,” both accompanied by saxophone, as well as in Eric Whitacre’s “Seal Lullaby.” “No Mirrors in My Nana’s House” and “Let the Life I’ve Lived Speak for Me” portray cherished pictures from the past. The concert will conclude with popular standards from the American Songbook, See Chorale pg 2

The Palmyra Black Knights Sled Hockey Team is an adaptive sports team that enables youths and adults with disabilities in the central Pennsylvania area to play sled ice hockey. The program is USA Hockey-sanctioned and is a nonprofit, volunteer organization. Sled hockey is much like stand-up hockey, except players sit in a sled and use two hockey sticks to propel themselves and play the game. Some players with limited arm mobility/strength have a “pusher” who helps them move on the ice.

The team welcomes anyone age 6 and up who has a physical disability that prevents them from playing stand-up hockey. Many of the players drive long distances, sometimes from other states, just to practice and play on the team. While the team does traditional fundraising to offset most of its expenses, this year it needs additional assistance to purchase ice time so it can continue to practice throughout the summer. For more information, readers may visit www.gofundme.com /palmyra-black-knights-sled-hockey.

LANCASTER KENNEL CLUB

RED ROSE CLASSIC DOG SHOW MAY 11 & 12

The 18th annual Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on Monday, June 10, at the Royal Manchester Golf Links, 5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf. In the past 17 years, more than 500 players from nine states have played in the event, which has raised more than $75,000 for the GEARS Camp Ladybug Summer Program and Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network. The two groups have been the golf tournament’s main beneficiaries. “A match play tournament is very unusual, especially involving a charity event,” explained tournament director Clair Dale Treese. “In match play, every hole is important. The players like that ... they have to make a shot for their team. But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA)

rating of the course. Each team will play three matches of nine holes each for a total of 27 holes overall, and teams that qualify after the three initial matches will continue to the single-elimination championship match play rounds. In those matches, each team will play best-of-three holes. The final two teams will play to determine an overall tournament team champion. Matches will begin at 8:15 a.m., and lunch will be served at 2 p.m. The championship rounds will start at approximately 3:15 p.m., with the presentation of the trophy and prizes for the champions, along with the second- and third-place teams, at approximately 5 p.m. Team registration and sponsor forms are available by contacting Treese at 717367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net. The team entry, which must be postmarked by Wednesday, May 22, will include access to a practice range, the use of a cart, 27 holes of golf, prizes and the luncheon. There is an early registration discount for teams whose forms are postmarked before Friday, May 10.

Proceeds will help Camp Ladybug offer its summer program to area residents with mental and/or physical challenges at no cost to the participants. GEARS conducts Camp Ladybug in conjunction with the Elizabethtown Area Services for Special Needs. This year’s camp will be held at the Elizabethtown Park Pavilion 5 from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, June 17, to Friday, July 26, with no camp on Thursday, July 4. “Over the years, we have had the kids attend the tournament to meet the players and receive some golf instruction by the teaching professionals,” Treese explained. “We repeatedly tell the teams involved that it is a golf tournament, but they are here playing for the kids. We know the need never goes away, so we keep trying to do what we can to help.”

The Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on June 10 at Royal Manchester Golf Links in Mount Wolf. The event will benefit Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network, as well as GEARS’ Camp Ladybug Summer Program, which offers experiences to youths like Briana.
