Native perennial plant species have been planted around the lab. “The lab is open for all teachers, prekindergarten through eighth grade, to utilize for lessons, as well as specials. Students have already had music lessons in the lab,” stated Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development. “It is primarily geared towards our young elementary students’ science studies.” The hands-on classroom was the vision SSBVM principal Rebecca Harvey, who partnered with landscape

designer Kevin Boustead of Stauffers of Kissel Hill to create the Nature Lab, which is designed to supplement the students’ indoor, teacher-initiated model with outdoor, child-initiated activities. “Children will be able to engage in all sorts of STEM activities, (such as) the study of pollination in the wildflower garden, insect life cycles in the woodland garden, the study of weather patterns using the various instruments and gauges and even chiropterology, the study of bats,” said Harvey at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “They will be able to grow and taste herbs and vegetables, all in an effort to encourage healthy living.” Volunteers, including members of the Knights of Columbus from the Monsignor George V. Lentocha Council 3501 and Eagle Scout Michael Astfalk from Boy Scout Troop 594 helped construct the outdoor learning space, which was fully funded through donations from the community.

Vinny has always loved art, and prior to entering the contest, he turned his creative talent into a profit by selling his hand-painted shoes through his Instagram account. As a Blue Raider wrestler, he was particularly excited to be contacted by wrestlers from Cornell University, Penn State University, University of Wyoming and Ohio State University to create custom wrestling shoes for them. Vinny’s shoes also caught the attention of one of his father’s friends, who informed Vinny and his father about the Vans design competition. With the help of MAHS art teacher Liz Strite, Vinny completed the contest application. Since the contest recommended that several students take part in the process, Strite gathered a small group of students to collaborate on the themes to provide ideas for Vinny’s designs.

March marked the 100th anniversary of Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania (VROCP). The nonprofit agency began as a member of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind (PAB) for Dauphin County, and the area of responsibility expanded to include Cumberland, Perry, and Franklin counties. retinopathy, cataract, and glaucoma. Need has increased for prevention specialists, case coordinators, the Eye Clinic, and low vision rehabilitation, which fulfill the VROCP mission to facilitate independence, enrich the quality of life, and empower individuals who are visually impaired or otherwise disabled through prevention, employment and educational awareness programs. VROCP recently thanked everyone who has supported its commitment to the blind
