for Brittany’s Hope. Proceeds from the ride will benefit at-risk and orphaned children served through the nonprofit organization. Myers explained that the idea for the bike ride came from brainstorming ways to reach a new audience of supporters. The organization already holds fundraising events, including Brittany’s Ball, an annual gala, and the Walk of Love 5K. A volunteer involved with the gala suggested the bike ride. “This area is a very active biking community,” Myers said. “People are very invested in cycling here, and we wanted to tap into that as a way to try something new.” Biking for Brittany will feature a rolling start beginning between 7 and 9 a.m. and will include rest stops along the way for riders. “We have different groups from the community managing each rest stop, and we’ll have a chance for our riders to refuel, because this is a long time to be out on their bike,” Myers noted. Founded in 2000, Brittany’s Hope is an organization
devoted to providing aid to abandoned children, including adoption grants for families seeking to adopt special-needs children. “Biking for Brittany will help children who are most in need of support,” Myers said. “Brittany’s Hope is unique in that 100% of everything we raise goes directly to help children.” Myers emphasized that along with participating in Biking for Brittany as an inperson rider on the day of event, people can support the mission by engaging in a virtual ride on their own time or by supporting a rider with donations. “This ride is giving people the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery - we really took that into account when the route was planned - and get active while supporting a great cause,” Myers stated. “It’s going to be a fun day.” Registration will be available until the day of the event, but a discount on registration will be available until Wednesday, June 1. For more information on the event, visit www.biking forbrittany.org.

Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

For parents of children with special needs, going to the movies can be overwhelming. The darkness, sounds and crowds can cause anxiety and turn a fun outing into a source of tension. Colleen Ginder understands the issue firsthand. As the parent of a 5-year-old son, Nolan, who has autism, Colleen wanted to provide an opportunity for other families to bring their children to the movies. She arranged for a sensory-friendly movie outing in April at Penn Cinema in Lititz. More than 100 people from 27 families throughout Lancaster County, Lebanon County and Hershey attended a showing of “Sing 2.” “(Nolan) had never been to the movies, and I figured if he has never been, then probably some of his peers have never been either,” said Colleen, who lives in Manheim. “I felt that this event would give families like mine an opportunity to attend an event that we would normally shy away from either because of sensory issues, financial concerns or fear of judgment from people who may not understand our specific needs.” Despite never having planned an event like this before, and with the original date rescheduled due to a snowstorm, Colleen said the day was very well-received. “It went exactly as I had hoped that it would,” she stated. “The kids were able to walk around, sing, talk, sit on the floor, play and just generally do exactly what they needed to do to feel comfortable watching the
movie. The parents as well were able to be present knowing that their children were in a safe environment to be exactly who they needed to be. We were all there for the same reason, and you could feel the support and acceptance in the room.” Colleen said her goal in creating the event was to make it as accessible to as many families as possible, including keeping the cost low. “I know for myself, we have never taken Nolan to the movies. Part of that was because I couldn’t see spending the money on taking our entire family out and then having to face the very real possibility that we would have to leave early or even before the movie even started because of sensory issues or just not being able to follow social norms that are easy for some but not all of us,” she stated. She approached Tom Zern at John A. Zern & Sons Beverage Distributor in Manheim, who donated toward the cost of the theater rental and also provided soda and ice for the event. A family member of Colleen’s covered the rest of the theater rental cost, and Penn Cinema donated free bags of popcorn to the group. “I am definitely hoping to do another event like this,” Colleen said. “The movie was a huge success, so possibly I will try to plan another movie, But I have several other ideas going as well.” To request notifications of upcoming events, contact Colleen at cjoyginder @gmail.com or call or text 717-666-5900.

kids for delays by letting them know in advance that some setbacks are possible. Expected delays should be built into the itinerary, so people are not stressing out about missing anything. If travelers ex perience no delays, then the weekend begins that much sooner. It is important to do one’s part to avoid surprises or problems that can be anticipated. When traveling by air, travelers should confirm everything they need to get through security and onto the plane as quickly as possible. Travelers should make sure passports and other forms of identification are current. Bags should be packed wisely so there are no surprises at check-in time. The more details tended to in advance of departure, the less stressful the travel day will be. Travelers should also consider a local destination. Another way to beat crowds is to avoid joining them. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration estimates that roughly 40% of the American population lives in coastal communities. That means more than 120 million Americans can drive
to coastal areas without having to traverse potentially congested highways and interstates. Stay local for busy travel weekends like Memorial Day and reserve longer trips for other times of the year when fewer people are on the road. Memorial Day travel is historically heavy. Savvy vacationers can employ various strategies to avoid the crowds this year.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer, and this year the roads figure to be as busy as ever as summer travel picks up. Travelers concerned about the prospect of sitting in traffic jams this Memorial Day weekend can heed several tips to ensure their weekends are more fun than frustrating. They include avoiding peak travel times, expecting the trip to take longer than planned, planning ahead to avoid surprises or problems, and considering a local destination. The easiest way to find oneself stuck in Memorial Day traffic is to hit the road during peak travel times. Many people have embraced the trend of leaving early for holiday weekend travel, so the roads may be busier than drivers would ex pect on Thursday afternoon and evening. If it is possible, drivers can hit the road prior to 3 p.m. on the Thursday before the holiday. If work and kids’ school schedules make that impossible, departure should be delayed until late Thursday night or before the sun rises on Friday morning. Late at night or very early in the morning might not make for the most accommodating travel time, but roads tend to be the least congested at these times. Travelers should expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, even if traveling during offpeak hours. Recognition of that can make traffic jams or flight delays a little easier to manage. Parents can prepare

The Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) will host a concert by organist Michael Hey of New York City on Sunday, May 22, at 4 p.m. at Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 310 N. Third St., Harrisburg. Hey will play works of Bach, Sowerby, and others, along with a new composition by Jason Roberts, on the fourmanual, 83-rank SkinnerMöller organ. A native of Milwaukee, Hey graduated in 2014 from the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in organ performance, studying with Paul Jacobs. Within one year of his graduation, he was appointed associate director of music and organist of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, where one of his first major tasks was to play the organ for vespers and Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Madison Square Garden for the
first U.S. visit of Pope Francis. In September 2017, Hey received first prize in the First Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Organ Competition. In 2019, he performed solo recitals for the New York City Chapter of the AGO and two regional conventions for the American Guild of Organists. He has performed on U.S. and international concert stages, presenting solo organ recitals at Lincoln Center in New York City; the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia; the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; and Davies Hall in San Francisco. Admission is free. Parking is provided by Pine Street Church in the South Street Garage, across the street from the north side of the church. For more information, contact AGO member Tyler Canonico at canonico@market squarechurch.org or 717-2571270, ext. 18.
