Strawberry Festival Will Help Preserve History The preservation society has helped to repair walls and floors in one part of the building and is now focusing on replacing mantles above two fireplaces in the ballroom before renovating the mansion’s museum room. It’s a sweet tradition, and it returns this year for the first time since 2019. The 15th annual Strawberry Festival will be held on Sunday, June 5, from noon to 4 p.m. at the historic Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. The festivities will include food, music and more. “We’ll have a lot of strawberry desserts, including strawberry milkshakes as well as chocolate and vanilla milkshakes,” said Elaine Jackson, corresponding secretary for the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. “We’ll have strawberry shortcake and homemade strawberry lemonade. We get our strawberries from Masonic Village, so they are local, and they are delicious.” Additional food items will include hot dogs, bratwurst, chicken corn soup and chili, along with chips, sodas and water. A silent auction will feature items donated by local businesses and individuals, including artwork. Among the variety of children’s activities that will be held during the festival are a coloring contest and an opportunity to guess how many candies are in a jar. Live music will be performed Elaine Jackson in one of the restored rooms within the by NEV Bluegrass. Attendees Haldeman Mansion

Each year, the Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America (PA FBLA) selects a statewide nonprofit to assist through fundraising, community service, and education. For its 2021-22 state project, PA FBLA selected Feeding Pennsylvania, the statewide association of Feeding America food banks. Through the state project, named “Bank on tomorrow by feeding the need today,” PA FBLA raised over $25,517. The donation will be distributed among Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks, which serve all 67 counties across the commonwealth through their 3,000

partner agencies. In addition to the funds raised, PA FBLA chapters across the state led fundraising events, volunteered, shared on social media, and participated in Feeding Pennsylvania’s annual advocacy campaign, “Hear the PA Crunch,” to help raise awareness of hunger in their communities. Contributions will continue to be accepted from chapters until Monday, June 20. For more information on the partnership between PA FBLA and Feeding Pennsylvania, visit https://bit.ly/pa-f bla -21-22-state-project.

let’s get social

Recent Graduates Can Share Skills is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work. Community involvement, health care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations. Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English as a second language to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping nonEnglish-speaking individuals improve their language skills. Community government offers many options. A person may choose to sit on the board of a school or a neighborhood housing association or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. This will provide valu-

able hands-on experience and may help one lend a voice to issues that affect his or her living situation. Religious groups may have volunteer opportunities focused on community outreach or programs affiliated with local nonprofits. Conservation groups offer volunteers opportunities to work on conservation projects across the country. From wildlife management to trail restoration to invasive species eradication, there are a wide variety of conservation-based volunteering opportunities. Graduates can volunteer to tutor students in local schools or overseas. Opportunities to tutor may be available in a variety of topics.

During the months between graduating high school and beginning college or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism. Volunteerism can fill gap years or add to résumés for recent graduates. Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people. Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selfless acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently joined the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and Pennsylvania organ donation organizations Donate Life PA, Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), and Gift of Life Donor Program in spreading the message that driver’s license and identification card holders can easily register as an organ donor. Potential donors considering adding the organ donor designation to their driver’s license or identification card do not have to wait for their renewal notices to take action. Many Pennsylvanians have answered the call to become organ donors, helping Pennsylvania organ donation organizations to near a major milestone this year. Almost 50% of current driver’s license and identification card holders are registered organ donors. To add the organ donor designation to an existing driver’s license or identification card, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and select the Become an Organ Donor In 30 Seconds icon in the middle of the page. Once the designation is added, individuals will receive a designation card that they must carry with them to affirm organ donor status until they renew or replace their driver’s license or identification card. There is no charge for adding the designation to a driver’s license or identification card. Driver’s license and identification card holders, as well as registered vehicle owners, can also support organ donation programs by donating to the Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund at the time of application or renewal. Proceeds from the fund are used to educate and promote awareness of the organ donor program through nonprofit organizations like CORE and the Gift of Life Donor Program. For more information on organ and tissue donation in Pennsylvania or to sign up to become an organ donor, visit www.donatelifepa.org, www. core.org, or www.donors1.org.
