Middletown Ministries Offers Prayer Program, Celebrate Recovery BY FRANCINE FULTON
hose who would like to share and pray with others are invited to take part in a “Prayer in the Neighborhood” program being offered by a new local nonprofit organization, Middletown Ministries. The virtual program began on May 19 and will continue every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Those who would like to join may contact Theresa Whitcraft, director and co-founder of Middletown Ministries, at www.facebook .com/MiddletownMinistries. Those who send a message to Theresa on Facebook will be provided with the Zoom link. Theresa is also open to having neighbors attend the program in person at the couple’s home. The prayer program will take place on an outdoor back porch. Interested individuals may contact Theresa on Facebook for more details. “People can pray for whatever they want to or request prayer for whatever they need,” Theresa said, explaining the program. “If you are interested in prayer and being part of our prayer ministry and need or want to pray with someone, that’s what I’m (here) for.” “The whole idea is to get people together with each other and God at the same time,” she said, adding that the ministry would also like to offer a Bible study program. Theresa, along with her husband, Bill, president and founder, formed the Christian outreach ministry less than a year ago. Bill is an ordained certified chaplain with Corporate Chaplains of America. “We have been in ministry for years, but God put it into our hearts to start our own ministry and step out and do things,” Theresa said. Arts And Crafts Fair To Return The Middletown Area Historical Society of Dauphin County will present the 46th annual Middletown Arts and Crafts Fair in Hoffer Park, located on Mill Street, on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. This fair is a tradition that celebrates the Middletown Resolves, which declared Middletown’s independence from Great Britain in 1774, two years before the Declaration of Independence was ratified. The fair is a free event. It will include more than 100 art and craft vendors, a variety of food booths, entertainment, and a cruise-in car show. Crafts to be featured include painting, pottery, acrylics, wood working, and broom making. New this year will be the Craft Beer & Wine Café, where guests age 21 and over will be able to enter the main pavilion and purchase beverages from Tattered Flag Brewery & Distillery of Middletown and J&P Winery of Grantville.

Harrisburg, on Thursdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Future plans call for the ministry to have its own facility or office and to offer additional programming. “ We would like to have our own building and expand our ministry,” said Theresa. “Going to a Celebrate Recovery meeting is really good, but having the security in knowing someone is there when you need them is what we focus on. Our focus is to be there for people.” For more details about Middletown Ministries and its programs, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or www.middletownministries.org.

Derry Township Launches New System For Alerts Derry Township has launched Nixle to implement a new community notification system to provide real-time alerts about localized emergency situations and relevant community advisories. The new system replaces the old Code Red alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up for Nixle as soon as possible. If people currently receive emergency notifications from Derry Township via Code Red, they will still need to sign up for the new system. Residents may choose one of three ways to register. They may text their ZIP code to 888777 from their mobile phone, visit www.derrytownship.org and sign up via the Nixle link, or visit www.nixle.com. Once registered, residents will receive a confirmation text on their mobile device. Residents may also customize their alert settings by going to www .nixle.com and creating a
user profile. Individuals may also add the Nixle app to their phone to receive notifications. The new emergency notification system will allow important messages to be sent to residents via text, email, and home phone depending on the urgency of the message and how residents wish to be notified. It also allows customized messages to be sent based on geography, so notifications can be targeted. Nixle messages are also connected to Derry Township’s Facebook and Twitter pages to help expand the communications efforts. Nixle is also used in communities near Derry Township, including Middletown, Susquehanna Township, and South Londonderry Township. For details or assistance registering with Nixle, call the Derry Township Police Department at 717534-2202.
